I'm new to HTC and Android. I have been using the Iphone for a few years now, in fact, I have about 12 handsets on my business. I was recently in HK and decided to try out the Desire HD to see if I should change over the rest of the handsets to HTC.

I purchased a sim free handset. Inserted my HK iphone4 sim in an adaptor and used it whilst there. It worked really well and I was pleased to try a new OS for a change.

When back to the UK, I came to swap out my HK sim to my UK one, actually wanting to keep the HTC instead of the iphone4.. the micro sim adaptor was firmly wedged in the socket.. not even a pair of tweezers could get the little blighter out, then the adaptor frame snapped leaving half of it still inside the connector housing... My industry is supplying electronic components and working with electronic design. The socket housing, after inspection is very badly designed and in my opinion, there should be a note saying not to use an adaptor as it's clear now that the socket forces the micro sim out of the adaptor once inserted, meaning you can't later remove it.

I called HTC UK, explained the situation, sent the phone off to them along with a proof of delivery and a full explanation nate.. waited about two weeks for them to send me a bill for repair (as I thought).. the phone was returned with a note saying they couldn't locate any issues... sure enough, the adaptor was still inserted in the socket..

So, I called again to the UK help desk, only to be told this time that they wouldn't help me as the phone is from HK.. and If I wanted a repair, I needed to send it there... they even had the cheek to accuse me of not telling them the first time that the phone was an Asian one.. WTF.. I sent them a copy of the receipt and told them many times on the phone..

Long story short..

I'm VERY upset at the HTC attitude.. I'm an international business man. I have offices and staff in HK and USA who are currently running, and after this farce, will continue to run iphones..

Non worldwide warranty is not good in this global industry.. but not accepting a phone from another part of the world when the owner is willing to pay for the repair is crazy.. very bad service...

I'm pretty sure microsim adaptors won't be approved by any handset maker, and thus using one would invalidate the warranty, I dont mean to sound harsh but you have kinda brought this onto yourself, It's not HTC's fault you have tried using the phone for something it's not meant to be used for, If it was gonna take a microsim, It would have a slot specifically for microsims. I'm going to play cricket tomorrow, might use my phone as a bat, Why not, The instruction manual doesn't say not to.

Read the info again... I think you have missed my point.

I dont expect HTC to fix it for free..I do agree that this shouldn't be a warranty fix..However, they should just fix it and charge me for it without asking me, the customer, to send it to Asia..

These products are manufactured to be used worldwide with different bands etc.. so it makes no sense at all to not fix a phone within the owners own country, especially if the owner is willing to pay for it.

Just to pick up on your analogy.

Your phone wasn't designed to be used as a bat.. However, your phone was designed to accept a sim card.... If the manufacturer then decides to restrict which sim card you can use.. then they should make this clear in the instructions... A sim card is an integral part of the design, concept and functionality of a mobile phone.... Keeping within your cricket theme.. How's that! ;-)

Anyway.. this post was just to warn anyone else not to use a micro sim within the HTC desire HD otherwise it will get stuck..

Apple has approved micro sim... so this is statement isn't accurate..

My mates DHD was actually shipped with a micro sim and when he called Carphone Warehouse to ask what to do, they advised him to look for a microsim adaptor.

Looking at this, it was probably for the best he called Orange and got a new sim instead.

Well the microsim does sit inside a plastic carrier. Whilst not technically an adaptor, it still provides the same function of holding the small sim secure whilst inserting into the phone.

My phone came with what appears to be a micro sim. Its a small sim that sits inside a black holder. I thought it was odd when I installed it as the first time itried to take it out it got stuck. The sim and black holder were supplied by orange with the phone.
should I be asking orange for a different sim?

Yes. I would also advise them that the microsim and adaptor get stuck inside the phone. If this happens will they repair under htc warranty.

Wow. Well all I can tell you is that HTC UK categorically tell you That this phone should not be used with micro sims.
Simple test. Open the phone and take out your sim. Can you do it??? I know I couldn't. I tried everything.
If you can't point orange to this thread. It proves it not just you having the problem.

Working in electronic design, i can see where the issue lies, the combination of socket used to hold the sim and the plastic tray covering the circuit has produced an entry for the sim that has a step on the edge. Once the adaptor goes over this step, the micro sim is forced from the adaptor. Not bad if you never want the sim out again. But really bad if you do.

I will be interested to hear if yours does come out.

having exactly the same issue. i wanted to move from DHD to DZ and just because i can't get the freaking micro sim adaptor out of the slot, i can't change the phone now. how great of htc.

i half heartedly google for this as i was very sure that i am the only one around the globe who is having this issue. not true!

OK. I think I have figured out a way to take it out. If you are the one having this issue, please do it at your own risk. Though I must say, it is not very risky procedure.

If you have put in your micro sim into a Desire HD using an adaptor, you might be stuck with your sim inside now. That is what happened with me. I tried everything but could not take the darn thing out.

To take it out, you need to have a very thin flat metal thing, which could slide under the sim card slot of your DHD. You must be thinking, where in the world would I find this metal. If you own an iPhone, you are in luck. I used iPhone's sim tray ejector for this purpose and it worked like a charm. What you do is, take the iPhone sim tool, place the pointed side of the tool underneath your micro sim adaptor and slid it gently inside. It'll stuck after few millimeters but you need to apply some gentle force and do some wiggling to take it through. Once you go pass that point, you have good chances that you'll be able to set your sim card free. Just keep sliding the tool in till it is almost half way in. Now take a tweezer or preferably a bent nose plier (or any plier for better grip) and gently pull the micro sim adaptor while wiggling it inside the slot. If you think it is still not going to get out, you probably need to shove the iPhone sim tool a little more inside the sim slot and try with plier again. For me, it came out in the first attempt.

I looked at the instruction leaflet for the phone that Kbaby kindly posted earlier in this thread and the phone was clearly designed to function with a normal sim and micro sim.. HTC should address this instead of constantly bringing out new phones every 5 mins..

I agree, same applies to the firmware updates for the DHD - look after the customers that have shelled out large amounts of cash

Another Good reason for me not to buy & ditched HTC brand forever.

It's Samsung for me from now and forever!
As long as it's under warranty period, even on the last week of warranty, Samsung Singapore always take in my bad, brick, dropped phones without even asking me why or how it happened that way. They only want to what's went wrong with the phone, jogged down the repair in their PC system, print the doc and ask me to collect when they call me in a day or 2. And when they do called me after my phone was repaired, they offer to free deliver it to any local location of my choice. That's the best service of all cellphone maker since 1990's.
