Help thunderbolt or iphone for using Outlook

The wife and I are both eligible for upgrades. she has already upgraded to iphone 4. She has synched the iphone with her work email and it works great. I have my thunderbolt pre-ordered and i am waiting patiently for my phone to arrive. But now I am scared. Will the thunderbolt work with Outlook email and calendars as nice as the iphone4.

If you email runs through IMAP or pop3 it will be a piece of cake. Just set it up with the mail program on android. If you are using pop3 then you do need to set it to keep a copy of the email on the server so your outlook can also download it.

The calendar works, but you have to do a work around by installing the gmail sync program on your computer. Essentially, it will sync your gmail calendar with your Outlook and the gmail calendar will sync with your phone. It works pretty well.

There are other ways to do this, but from what I've found this works well for my situation.

I have used the Incredible, Droid X, and Fascinate for exchange/outlook and I think the Incredible was the best of the three. So the Thunderbolt should be the same, but like someone else suggested Touchdown is better IMO, especially because I got it for free.

With that said, the iphone is a ton better for exchange support, night and day difference to me. I was using it on the iphone 4 and liked it a lot better.

That doesn't mean android's is horrible, still pretty good, just thought the iphone did it a bit better.

In the absence of downloading an app like touchdown, will the HTC having built in support for outlook. I guess my question is... Will setting up outlook be a simple ordeal like with the iphone or will you have to go through a bunch workarounds and downloading external apps and stuff

Please note, Outlook is just a program that downloads emails for you to read. Your email server does not run on "Outlook". With exchange, you can sync with Outlook with an exchange server running. Otherwise, you can have your phone sync to the actual email server the same way that Outlook does. The best route for you depends on what your work uses for email. Do they run an exchange server or is the email web based? If your wife's got her's synced, how was it done?

Usually it can be done for most companies that allow for email to be accessed off of their own intranet. Essentially, if you have Outlook on a laptop that syncs your email at home, your android can do it without any more software. The additional software just either does it differently (such as exchange), or makes it easier to do.

Personally, I've had 4 different email accounts that synced up nicely with my Eris. While in school, I had to sync to both their internal servers as well as through Google apps when they switched over and it was a breeze. I currently still have hotmail synced with no issues as well. The only thing that my Eris will not do is sync my To Do list from Outlook. For some reason that has plagued users for a while. There are programs that will turn the to do list into calendar entries, but that's another issue.

I have 4 emails set up and running perfectly on my Incredible . I personally use K9 email I love the options it has . It doesn't burn battery and I get my work emails almost instantly after sent. I have my personal email to only check every hour as it's not important 90% of the time .
But if I were you I wouldn't worry about it , it will be just as your wifes Iphone . Actually at my work we send out an email every morning and I get the email a few seconds before the Verizon iphone does maybe 5 seconds sooner like it really matters haha

I agree with Wolfedude88, I've had the Droid, Eris, Incredible, X, Fascinate, and i'm using a Droid Pro now and the Incredible was the best of the bunch handling my corporate emails. I got calendar reminders, contacts, mail, etc.

I also got Touchdown for free but there are so many options that the default email does everything i need.

I don't think you can go wrong either way but if you are in a 4G area, the TB has to be the way to go!

I use the Incredible (HTC, so likely similar to the TB) in conjunction with Outlook. I do not do a physical sync at all with my computer. I do use a program called 'G-Sync it' to keep my phone and outlook synchronized and it does it well. Yes, I had to pay for it....but it is a 'set it and forget it' type of program.

Before Ihad G-Sync it, I had to use a 'subscribed' approach to the calendar - meaning that I was only able to VIEW appointments with outlook. If I wanted to make a new appointment that would show up with all three, I had to make the appointment on the web version of my calendar OR I had to make the appt on my phone. It works fine this way if you are ok with that.

With G-Sync it, I'm back to being able to enter my appointments from any location (desktop, phone, wife's phone, wife's mac or web - and now G-tablet). All sync in unison (not only appts, but also notes, tasks, etc).

All of this is done without ever hooking it to the computer....it just happens.

Maybe I should mention that my 'need' for G-Sync it is not due to my phone being an android, but rather the fact that I choose to use a Google-based calendar (which outlook can only either subscribe to, or sync via a 3rd party with).

I would have to do the things in the post above AND sync with a cable if I threw an iPhone or BB into the mix.
