Home button and screen locking

ok, so i bought an atrix today (switched over from an iphone 4) i have no idea what im doing since this is my first android phone.

no matter where i am on the phone, i press the home button on the bottom and nothing happens ( i feel the phone vibrate, but it doesn't go to the home screen ????)

also, how i do i get my phone to actually lock. i press the power button , the screen shuts off. but when i press it again, im back to where i was before, no pin or fingerprint. I set both pin and fingerprint up.

If I understand correctly, you are wondering why you don't have to use your fingerprint to enter the phone immediately after pressing the power button to turn the screen off?

I think the answer to your question is that on mine, when I turn the screen off, if I turn it back on within a set amount of time then it doesn't require the fingerprint. I believe the reason for this is because if you have just been using the phone, then you obviously are the correct user, and therefore no need for security.

edit: just checked again, and it was requiring the fingerprint every time. I have had this happen though. I guess I don't exactly know why it only happens sometimes.

I also can't get the help guides to run now. First they loaded onto the screen, but wouldn't play. Now the entire screen is blank.

So far, I don't like this phone. I don't have time to screw around with figuring out how to do basic stuff.

Not to sound facetious, but have you tried turning the phone on and off again?

I was having the same problems with both the home button and screen lock not functioning after I turned on the phone for the first time, but I restarted it and have had no problems since.

That there are more screens on the phone? swipe your finger across the screen and it switches to subscreens right? When you are not on the home screen and you press the home button it brings you to the home screen.

I had a Iphone friend that made the same mistake with my phone.

You are going to have a learning curve with any new phone (or piece of electronics). Especially when coming from an apple product. Apple typically has a set way to do everything...apple's way, but Android (and formerly on a pc) you can do things 17 (or more) different ways. My Ph.D. advisor hated the unix computers in our lab because he couldn't comprehend anything without a "econ" (icon) on it.

I had the same issue. Quick reboot made the home button fully functional and haven't had a problem with it since.

Nope - I have the same problem and a reboot (several actually) haven't helped. I'm pretty sure some app has glommed onto teh button for it's own uses but how to find that out? Surely there's a master location to reset/choose functionality for this softbutton? I found the setting for double-click, so how about single click?

I'm not sure if there is a way around the issue you're experiencing as I haven't seen it here with my Bell Canada model Atrix, but I can tell you one thing for sure - a factory reset wipes the phone clean as a newborn baby's bum.

Seriously, I always do a factory reset shortly after buying a new phone. Why you ask? Simple I say. To wipe it clean and reset it back to original factory settings.

Even though your phone is new and hasn't had anything installed or altered, all phones are "tested" by Quality Assurance Personnel prior to being shipped out from the factory. In some instances, it was not reset at the factory by these personnel, or it was never fully tested, or it was dropped on the anti-static mat below the QA person, and replaced on the desk without any physical issues.

So I always do a factory reset shortly after testing the functionality of the phone to get back to "square one" and set it up the way I want.

Having said that, it's possible a "rogue app" has done something to your phone (read: memory leak or other) and caused issues. If you don't mind doing so, a factory reset will reset the firmware and give you a "like new" configuration that you can setup again. It's a hassle I know, but it gets rid of any issues/software that may be causing your problems. Then you install ONE app at a time, test, and then install the next app, until you find the culprit. Again, I know it's a hassle, but it's the price we pay for an open OS and lots of free Android apps.

PS - I've reset my brand spanking new Bell Atrix about 4 times since I brought it home. I setup, test, install apps, test, configure, test, and reset. I'm a geek I know, but I'm also very meticulous with my stuff, and that includes my wife.

PPS - don't tell her I said that, or she'll get REALLY excited and I won't sleep for days.

I am pretty sure there is a time limit/choice for the lock screen, by default it is set for 15 minutes or something. I think you can set it to every single time the screen goes off...

Yes you can set it as you suggest.

But if you set it with the fingerprint scanner, then it defaults to "immediate" lock and anytime the display is locked, either manually or by the timeout setting of 30secs/1min/whatever, it STILL reverts to the basic configuration and the screen is locked until you either swipe or enter the PIN to unlock.
