Upgrade process...what to expect?

Okay, so now that we're hours/days away (barring another last-minute change of plans), I'm curious how the upgrade will affect the current settings and installed apps on my phone. I'm running stock DI18 now.

In my past life with the Moment, the update was downloaded to a PC, and transferred to the phone via USB. It caused almost all data to be wiped, and the phone lost backgrounds, downloaded applications, and certain other media.

With 2.2 being delivered OTA to the Epic (seemingly the only way to get it), does anyone know if the update will be as destructive to installed components, or will it be able to preserve apps/backgrounds/etc., while just upgrading the core OS?

Hoping to be one of the lucky few to get the update in the next 48 hours, before the phone leaves the USA with me for a few days...

Thanks for the info.

I did the update last night. By copying the update.zip file to the phone, and updating through the phone's recovery mode (vol down+camera+power), I lost virtually no data.

The most I had to do, was reenter some passwords (Gmail and Twitter, possibly some others I haven't found yet). Beyond that, it was quick and painless. If you haven't gotten the OTA update yet, then do it!

I also did it manually when the OTA hadn't hit my phone by this morning, and it was indeed smooth and painless. Only other thing I had to do was clear the calendar data and let it resync with Google.

Of course, I was hoping it would mean that I could finally use my desk dock with the audio port, but apparently not just yet. Other than that, my general impression is positive so far.

You mean the desk dock audio port still does not work! I was told when I purchased one in Oct that I would have to wait for 2.2 update in NOV for the dock to work. Glad I did not purchased a second dock and speakers.

I bought mine on launch day, and I wish I'd have returned the thing when I found out the audio port wouldn't work until the update "in a couple of months". It looks like they released a new version of the car dock app that supports 2.2, I can only hope they'll do the same for the desk doc app, which as of this morning still does not show up in the market on the phone (various reports have said the old one will simply force close anyway - I lost the app when I did an insurance replacement and never bothered restoring since it's a glorified paperweight without the audio port).
