Root To ROM or not?

Serious n00b here. Finally decided to root and install milestone overclock..I'm trying to decided to install a customer ROM or not? I'm nervous of screwing my phone up, but i'm really not too pleased with the performance of the phone as of right now, it seems sluggish and laggy.

Is there one rom that you could recommend (most user friendly)

Thanks in advance!

I have found Apex user friendly, smooth and stable (have tried most of the others). Once you get comfortable making nandroid backups it is fairly safe and painless (and fun) so try all that grab your interest. I always do a data and cache wipe when going to different developer's roms to minimize problems. Always make sure your phone is fully charged before flashing (sometimes I fail to follow my own advice). Good luck in your pursuit!

I myself have just recently joined the rooting community and I have to say, it really isn't as bad as it seems. Still make sure you do PLENTY of research before proceeding with anything such as ROMing to make sure you have proper backups, files, etc...

I have tried both ApeX and Liberty and right now my personal preference is Liberty. Not sure why, I just felt it ran a bit smoother for me, but everyone has their own opinion. I don't think I could ever go back to stock. I did in between ApeX and Liberty only to realize and remember how slow and laggy it was.

All I can say is do your research before you do anything major and always if you have questions, we are here to help! But if you are going to follow through I would start off with ApeX or Liberty.

Thanks guys, I'm seriously considering it, so long as I can find a good guide before I proceed.

On the other hand, there are serious consequences to going custom.

In no particular order: 1) You will find yourself constantly looking at developers pages for other ROM choices, just to see what is out there in order to squeeze out every last drop of performance from your phone. 2) You will be constantly on the lookout for themes and eventually will dabble in making your own. 3) You will begin to do all the little tweaks out there for your ROM, potentially filling your Friday and Saturday nights with Android. 4) You will find yourself checking these and other boards daily to see if an update is available for your ROM.

So you see, there are serious consequences for modding your phone. Are you prepared for them?

Sadly I will only have this phone until the Bionic is released :) I already have a nice set up that I am pretty happy with, which i spent hours upon hours figuring it all out...Will i lose all that stuff if I go to a custom rom (i guess i could use a change anyway) I really appreciate how awesome all you guys on here are, I'd be lost without all of you.

My wife has already started to suspect my Dx is taking attention from her.

Ahhh the beginning stages of upset wife over android addiction ....trust me it gets worse ....lol:D

My wife already warned me, if I am on my phone while we are in the delivery room she will kick me out. Been my third child (first son), I am seriously in pain because I wont be able to use my DX.

BTW I'm a ROM freak.

It would be a good thing if all the ROM developers could list what is included in their creations. This would make choosing a lot easier for nOoBz like me and others.

that would take the fun out of ROM'ing lol

and I can definitely say that it is addicting. I have thousands of icons and docks on my SD card now, over 300 apps and widgets and been switching between Apex and Liberty ROMs. I cant even get my phone set up they way I want it before I decide to change it, its actually quite annoying lol

Yes! You will be kicking yourself once you do it and see how much of a benefit there is, for the little amount of work it takes to do it.

And honestly the only reason I have the enthusiam to type these responses is because the whole process has been so rewarding for my phone personally.

Really the whole process is just more nerve racking then anything, and once you get done you will be surprised at how simple it is.

You can look these terms up in the forums, but I would suggest roolers guide or one of the guides that can be found by clicking back a the first few pages in this section.

But here is what you do. Ill sum it up, and you can look up specifics in the guide.

http://androidforums.com/droid-x-al...ide-root-unroot-backup-rom-sbf-overclock.html

Make sure you are updated to android 2.3.340.
For first timers go with apex, it keeps all the blur you want and gives you the option to get rid of what you dont want.
Get bootstrapper, make a backup. (roolers guide has directions)
Now get titanium backup free, click menu button, batch, backup all apps and data.
Now make sure your contacts are synced with google.
Ok so you have a backup up everything now, including a save to go back to incase you somehow botch the rom install. (very rare)

So now you are free to rom as you please, always following directions. If anything happens you go into bootstrapper and load your save and pretend nothing happened :).

From everything I have read on here, and in my experiences. All the problems you see people encountering are from trying to update to a newer version of android instead of doing it OTA. I rarely ever see someone on 2.3.340 or whatever version have problems if they are installing a rom for their correct software version. Always make sure the rom is compatible with the system version you are using.
