Root help, think i have buggered my hero up :(

hi guys, do you think you can tell me if my hero is rooted...

firmware 2.1-update1
baseband 63.18.55.06PU_6.35.15.14
kernal version 2.6.29-36d5cb8d htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
build number 3.35.61.2 CL196735 release-keys

it used to be on 2.1 tastyfroyo 'the hero strikes back'
but now its all changed to the above...i have universal androot, superuser and z4root currently on my menu, when i click universal androot it says the phone is rooted... but yet i carnt install applanet, nor can i press home and power button when the phone is off to load up the clockworkmod recovery screen, as am wanting to use modacos's custom rom, which i have saved to my sd card...and help guys since i am new to this :(

right i have loaded the custom rom, in the 'about phone' settings it says this;
firmware 1.5
baseband version 63.18.55.06PU_6.35.15.14
kernal version
2.6.25-mck-teknologist-1.92 root@neutrino
build number modaco custom rom 3.2 core, ssh, password ******

is this the latest custom rom?

also i had to download busybox, when i go to use it, it says i
status: failed...
your phone is rooted
busybox was found here: /system/xbin/currently installed busybox version is: v1.15.3

the application failed, either because your device is not nand unlocked or we were unable to remount. pleaseuse logcat at this time, get it from the market, to send log to stericDrroid@gmail.com

superuser is installed aswel

any ideas cos i am realy confused

@RetiredFinally, I assure you we know a thing or two about rooting here too ;)

@Voodoo No, that's not the latest ROM. Infact, it's a pretty old ROM and is older than even the official firmware you were running.

So, you want to use modaco's custom ROM, right? I would add that modaco isn't your only option. He stopped work with the hero a while ago, whereas there are many other devs with newer ROMs fro the hero. But if that's what you want, you need to download the latest version from here (link taken from this post). That one is the latest modaco version.

Once you've flashed that, you'll be rooted, have busy box installed and everything will be ready to go; you'll just need to restore your apps.

If you need instructions on how to flash it, just ask :) (and tell us which recovery menu you're using).

Well, it's a complicated question to answer. Even though the Hero only every recieved 2.1 officially, there are 2.2 and 2.3 custom ROMs available for the phone in various states of development.

Which ROM is best for you depends on:
- Whether you want HTC Sense, the custom UI you're used to using. Vanilla ROMs don't come with Sense, so you lose the HTC widgets and apps you're used to, and the phone will look somewhat different.
- Whether you are prepared to sacrifice a bit of stability to get a faster phone, or if you require a rock solid phone.

Of course, the beauty of custom ROMs is that, if you don't like the first ROM you try, you can easily switch :)

Hey, if it works, it works :p Sounds like you did it correctly, but for future refference, you want to do a 'nand backup' and then a full wipe before flashing new custom ROMs.

Hard to say about CM7, I would've just recommended you redownload it and reflash it, ensuring to do a full wipe beforehand. You certainly should've had a notification bar.
This is a cm7 based ROM from one of the best devs currently working on the hero, if you're interested. Do keep in mind, 2.3 ROMs aren't quite firing on all cylinders with the hero yet like 2.2 and 2.1. One thing that occurs to me though, is that it's possible with some launchers (like ADW) to hide the notification bar. Is it possible you did that by accident?

The reboot options seems to be baked into 2.2 and 2.3 cyanogen mod ROMs. I don't think you could add it to the modaco that you're running now.

How are you installing apps2sd? If your sdcard is correctly partitioned beforehand, it should automagically kick in the next time you boot the phone (even if you already have apps installed).

ok i will re-download cm7, altho am liking the htc sense style atm, i prefer the more modem up to date styles. it didnt have a notification bar soon as i installed it, which means i didnt have a laucher apart from the stock cm one.

for some reason i carnt partition it through the recovery mode, i dont know were to look on the internet about this problem. i have found an app called hot reboot, this does the trick nicely, quick aswel :) the rom i had on before was called tastyfroyo...dont know if it was a custom rom but the phone was deffo rooted.

also how do i back up all my stuff.
plus, is it possible to do a back up of this rom...so i can go back to it as it is if i dont like cm7?

What happens when you try? Do you get an error message of any description?

also how do i back up all my stuff.

My system is:
Contacts/email => Gmail
SMS/call log => WaveSecure
Apps/Market data/User settings => Titanium Backup
External memory => periodic mount as removable drive and copy contents

is it possible to do a back up of this rom...so i can go back to it as it is if i dont like cm7?

ClockworkMod (and Amon_RA) recovery have "backup" options which invoke Nandroid via scripts to do exactly this. A Nandroid backup is essentially a snapshot of the device state; restoring a backup replaces everything bar the recovery itself (and the FAT32 partition on an external memory card) and returns the handset to the state it was when the backup was made.
