Root Trying to decide to root

Excuse for being late to the party as far as rooting my phone but I have a couple of questions. I am not very tech savvy and am curious about a couple of things. It seems to me by reading that by rooting my phone it becomes a much faster device. For the most part I like the phone and really don't want to change how it is setup right now I would just like it to work faster. By rooting the phone will it stay the same that it is now or will I have to set it up all over again afterwards. I know that this sounds beginner level but I like the phone and am stuck with it until the end of the year for my new every two. Thank you for your time.

There is a way to root your phone and not have to change anything on it (other than gaining super user permissions). There is a one-click root app in the market (directions also found on this site). Before using this app, I suggest you read the universal eris root for dummies thread. Just rooting won't speed things up too much, but there are apps you can use to improve things. Read through as many of the threads in the root sub-forum that you can and find out what works for you. I will mention that if you want to overclock you will need to install either a custom ROM or a new kernel that allows overclocking.

However, you can also install a ROM called PlainJaneT2 or xtrSENSE which, I believe, will install right over stock Eris and keep all data and apps (I think somebody has done that) and will look and work almost exactly like stock Eris, except a lot more stable and quite a bit faster.

Just remember that this is an Eris, so faster does not mean that it will be as fast as a Droid X, Incredible, Fascinate, Droid 2 or Droid 1. Faster than stock Eris, yes.

As part of the ROM install process you wil be instructed to do something called a Nandroid backup, which creates a snapshot of how your phone is set up exactly as it is at the moment you run the backup, so you can restore it back if it turns out that I am completely wrong and installing one of those ROMs messes up your phone.

Ask plenty of questions if you are unsure of what you are doing, and read that Universal Root for Dummies thread to get an idea of what the process is. Don't be afraid to ask a question - the only dumb question is the one that you decided not to ask and ended up messing up your phone.

yes yes yes yes to rooting- one of the best decisions I made...and I struggled with it for a LONG time!! Start with like xtrSENSE, and you'll get the best of both worlds!!

X2 Rooting though will not alone speed up the device. It has to be combined with either overclocking the device, or flashing a custom ROM and overclocking the device. Depending on the ROM I have been able to overclock to 710-768mhz which is quite a bit more then a stock Eris.

I just dove into a Gingerbread ROM after being on Froyo since the first few days it was stable. So far Gingerbread has sped the phone up even more, however while not much harder to flash then a Froyo or earlier ROM, I wouldn't advise it for a beginner.

Well I decided to try and root my phone and did the necessary steps to prepare it from downloading es file explorer to the gscript. However when I went to extract the gscript it will not and I get a message saying bad zip file. I did the regular download for the gscript, should I have paid for the premium download or am I doing something wrong? Thanks for your help.

You probably just got a bad (incomplete) download. Try it again and be sure to compare your downloaded file's MD5 checksum so you'll know if the file is whole and uncorrupted.

You can check the MD5 via Astro File Manager (long-press the file name, select details and the MD5 will appear after a few seconds) or using my app, AFV (Android File Verifier) [free in the Market].

You'll get there...lots of folks have successfully used erisuser1's Univseral Root thread.
