Why 10.1 for you?

I was thinking why you guys chose the 10.1 form factor. I like the larger area but at the same time it becomes uncomfortable to take with you.

I think a 7 inch display (1280 by 800 ultra high res) would be more useful as you could carry it with you.

I'm gonna sit out for a few weeks and see what every company has to offer before jumping the gun.

Not having a job helps in the waiting ;)

post your thoughts on 10.1 vs. 7 inches

for me i want something that is lighter and easier to move around than my laptop for simple tasks. i am not looking for something to carry with me on an average day so in my case i want as much screen as possible which means 10.1 for me.

Also, with the portfolio accessory, it will be as easy as carrying a portfolio of paper with me to work (which I do anyways) and can store 10,000,000 times the data of a portfolio of paper.

how do you know the xoom will be uncomfortable to take? do you have a xoom and have been carrying it around a while and have come to realize its uncomfortable for you? well since you have had the xoom, what are your thoughts on it? hows battery life, etc...

I have found with the larger tablets bezel size is really important. The Xoom has absolutely the smallest bezel I have seen yet.

I actually really like the 7 in form factor of the galaxy tab, but I'm not willing to wait. 7 in felt perfect for handheld gaming with two thumbs. When I play games on an ipad, I normally set it down on my lap or on a table.

I like that the xoom is narrower than the ipad, hopefully it feels balanced despite the weight.

I think 10.1" is very portable, as are netbooks and what not. This provides a nice screen size for anything from reading, to gaming, to watching movies.

I feel that 7" is too close to home (even though the size difference compared to my cell phone is another 3.3") which makes me feel like it's just an oversized cellphone. At least 10.1" keeps its identity as a tablet and not a misfit cell phone. That's just my opinion, I think 10.1" (especially in the dimensions of the XOOM) is ideal.

I will use the tablet for many things, but browsing the web and gaming may be two of the most common. And I want a great visual experience for this, not yet another small screen. 7 inch tabs are basically giant phones. I want more than 7 inches.

As for portability, i cant really see putting the 7 inch tab in my pocket like a phone. So I am carrying whatever it is no matter what, assuming I am taking it somewhere. I do not mid carrying a 10 inch tab.

The 8.9 inch LG could be quite good too though, but I am unsure of the price point for that.

I am curious how people feel about the size of the Xoom screen. Obviously it is better for watching videos, but I have been finding it limiting in doing pretty much anything else. Portrait mode also seems to be fairly awkward and not that useful, as it is just a bit too thin to properly display most web pages. I didn't realize it beforehand, but having a taller screen seems much more useful than having a wider screen.

Thoughts?

Edit: Another way to put it would be: aside from watching video, do people find the size of the screen to help or hurt other tasks, such as browsing the web?

I agree with Mitchrapp, I pretty much only use it in landscape. What exactly did you find was limited by the screen size in landscape? I have found it perfect for movies, web surfing, playing games, email, etc. Also, the homescreens are huge, so I can fit just about everything that I want on one of them.

To be honest what I found most limiting was browsing the web. Many web pages are formatted in such a way that the content does not extend across the entire width of the screen, and so having a taller display allows you to see more of the content without having to scroll down. In landscape mode, I find myself having to constantly scroll down (which one would have to do anyway, but more frequently), and using portrait mode to get a good overview of a page is difficult because it is too narrow.

Not if you're not a portrait guy. I installed engadget on the zoom last night and require portrait mode and it lookes fine. I love the size.

I think portrait mode could be ok (indeed, maybe better than 4:3) if there were a way to increase the text size without zooming in, if that makes sense. Any idea if this is possible? If so, is it easy to toggle larger text on and off?
