Assuming the bootloader isn't locked (which is a BIG assumption) looks like we will all have to wait at least until the end of May to root.

Kinda crappy but I guess this is the price we pay for getting stuff early and having to have the newest shat out.

The most important part of the upgrade process IMHO is the fact that it clearly states that the upgrade to 4G will NOT change your data plan. Thats good news even if the data plans are already kind of high but at least we know we wont be paying a premium for 4G for the time being.

Ya I am not happy, on a good note, it does appear they are not changing pricing. They are hoping your data increases because of the LTE and therefore increase your plans.

Or 2 yrs if you do the contract. Which is pretty good, even if you pay premium for another tablet a year from now and use that contract. Kinda locks you in for 2yrs with no increase.

Yea, it seems like they are making a good amount of effort to convince customers into the 2 year contract. I got to play around with the Xoom last night and its one hell of a tablet. I may not be able to hold out for the wifi only version at this point.

I don't think this is as terrible as most make it seem. You know the tablet is 3G ready. You also know it can be upgraded to 4G with stipulations (sending it in, not having it for 6 days). If you don't want to take advantage of the 4G you don't have to, and you don't have to go through the hassle of sending it in.

Seems reasonable to me, you have choices, plus, my May your XOOM fever will be under control, so you will likely be ok without having it for a week.

I don't think this is as terrible as most make it seem. You know the tablet is 3G ready. You also know it can be upgraded to 4G with stipulations (sending it in, not having it for 6 days). If you don't want to take advantage of the 4G you don't have to, and you don't have to go through the hassle of sending it in.

Seems reasonable to me, you have choices, plus, my May your XOOM fever will be under control, so you will likely be ok without having it for a week.

I think it would be a mistake to NOT do the upgrade. The release says that this will be free for 6 months after they begin. If you choose to do it later it will cost you money, probably a fair amount. If you opt to never upgrade then you hurt your resale value down the road. Your 3G for sale will be competing against 4G options at a time when 4G is standard.

All I have to say is they better be damn good and well prepared when it comes time. Better not be doing that Microsoft nonsense, send in an Xbox360 and you another one back with a different serial... Or like the time I sent my 360 in and they sent it back without the wireless connect button working...and I only have wireless controllers lol

It seems like the upgrade process itself can last up to 6 business days (1 week +), this is not counting shipping both ways. I think this is more like a 2 week process (or more) total with shipping. Not great at all ..

Not to mention some tech ripping open your XOOM, sending out your XOOM with potentially sensitive data on it, etc, etc .. This is a crappy process IMO, riddled with potential issues ..

I can see info here ending up in the wrong hands. Personal stuff. Just my three sense.I will wait for the wifi one or wait till they come right from the factory 4g ready.Google has too much info already on me /us and the rest of the world.

They probably say up to 6 days, because when they first start accepting upgrades they'll be swamped. It'll more than likely ship with 4G starting about then, but I bet it won't take all of those 6 days after a month or so.

Either way I'm not too happy about it either, I will still buy one though.. just another sacrifice I have to make on the Xoom

Unless you plan on putting your tax info on here it is not like Google doesn't have access to it already...

All they have to do is look at your search history, your synced settings with chrome, google docs, calendar, email, phone contacts, google voice voicemails etc.

Google knows everything about you, I highly doubt you could do much to surprise them anymore.

Seems like good advice. Quite a pain still and a janky process all in all, but seems sound.

I shipped my iPad out on Monday, after I sold it, and I'm having tablet fever. It's harder than you think

Ya I am not happy, on a good note, it does appear they are not changing pricing. They are hoping your data increases because of the LTE and therefore increase your plans.

Yeah, that's what I figured too. But, on the bright side, I'll be using it around the house on my wifi most of the time.

i'd only be using 3g/4g when on the road with it, which really won't be much.

Good point, I'd probably uninstall / wipe anything with personal info on it before sending it back, just to be on the safe side. So, pretty much these first few months, until the upgrade is complete, is just play time, don't commit anything to the tablet.

Part of me wants to just wait till they can be purchased with the 4g/lte already on it and buy then. But, I don't want to wait, sigh... what to do?? what to do??
