Providence plans to pink slip all teachers

this is an absolute non-story....... what you have here is a case of unions trying to portray themselves as the victims

theyre going to be firing some teachers but have no clue how many they need to let go...... so they have to give notice of their intent to every teacher to cover their bases

the bigger story here IMO how much control these unions really have.........

can you think of any non-union job in the world where it is required by law to to give you notice that youre going to be fired..... let alone this many months notice

I absolutely agree with copestag. They need to lay people off, but since they don't know how many, they have to notify EVERYBODY by March 1st so that they can legally lay off the people they determine they need to.

If it wasn't for a stupid requirement, added via union threat of strike at some point, then they wouldn't have to resort to this.

but what about the children....? Who will teach them now....?

I'm going to assume you aren't being sarcastic, but I'm actually not sure.

The teachers aren't actually being fired. They are being notified that they are.

Why are they being notified that they are, when they aren't?

Because Unions have negotiated into the contracts that they be notified of any employment change for the upcoming year by March 1st.

Well, March 1st is fast approaching, and the school system hasn't finalized it's plans for dealing with the budget shortfalls.

They know that they will have to lay off some teachers, but not how many, or which ones.

So, to protect themselves for the coming year, they notified everybody, so that whoever they ended up letting go, would have been notified by March 1st, as is legally required.

yes i was being sarcastic... but seriously what does this do for the moral of the educators knowing that they could be terminated? If you knew you were being fired(which is probably what most of them are thinking) how hard would you really work?

I imagine it's absolutely demotivating. Unfortunately, the Unions left the officials with no choice in the matter.

Well the only people that are going to be punished are the students but if they were good teachers and actually cared about their students then they would teach them as well as they could anyways with the time they had left.

If their retaliation is to be lazy and not teach then I couldn't be any happier about them getting fired and would deserve it.
