G1 onscreen keyboard -cupcake or apps?!?

Hi everyone,

I'm seriously seriously looking into getting a G1. The only thing holding me back is the lack of an onscreen keyboard.

Does anyone know if cupcake is actually ever going to happen for the G1?

I've looked up apps and seen paw-paw and chomp sms.

Does anyone know if you can get chomp sms without having to pay up using the service as i'll never need to use their sms with the t-mobile package.

Currently I am not recommending anyone Purchase a G1 ...because of extremely limit memory for apps and no way to backup "paid apps" ...

You do not need to back up "paid apps" they are tied to your SIM card and you can download them again if they get deleted or corrupted. Even if you move that SIM card and account to a new G1. I tested it out and it works.

Storage is only a problem if you really need that many applications. For me I use office apps and Touchdown for email. I use a few other popular applications and have no problems with memory.

I come from using Blackberry 8830 and an iPhone and I will take this phone over either of those.

I have 55 apps installed and probably have room for another 20 or so. If I had to delete some of the more frivolous ones to create space for something useful that would not be a problem to me. Whilst I would not recommend a G1 to everyone I love mine.

For many of us that have a look toward the future possibilities ... we back up our apps to the sdcard and the sdcard to a pc ....

If you only have a few apps and plenty of memory and don't plan on installing more and/or larger apps which will eat your very limit storage then you are "happy" ... but I believe you will run out of space eventually and then need to remove apps each time something comes along that you want ...

Of Course your Choice ... think ahead and maybe you wont be ranting or weeping in the future when diaster strikes ...

I had it for days now and its the best phone i ever had or used. Faster then iphone 3g and the apps are growing everyday. ALSO THEY HAVE AND ON SCREEN KEYBOARD THATS AMAZZING AND FREE CALLED CHOMPSMS AND ITS ESACTLY LIKE THE I PHONE IF YOU CANT FIND IT IN THE SEARCH BAR JUST LOOK THREW THE APPS. I had the phone for 5 days and the apps double everyday!! They also jst started apps you can buy so they are great also.

Chomp SMS and Handcent SMS are two free SMS app that have an onscreen keyboard and you do not have to pay for the Chomp SMS service to use it.
Also there is an alternative browser called Steel that has a touchscreen keyboard that is also free to use.
Although I love the G1's qwerty keyboard.

The only other excuse you could come up with is that we cannot run apps from the SD card but from what i have noticed using the phone that is not needed. I am sure google will eventually develop a bridge between the OS and the SD card so this will be possible. Like you said. We just need to think in the future.

Guess you have not tried to backup a paid apps ... I tied with Mybackup ...
I have tried with Terminal ... cp, cat ... the /Data directory is protected and marked private and appears only the operating system has access ... unless of course you have a rooted phone ...

In Addition ... if you use MyBackUp and do a complete backup you will not notice that it didnt do any "paid-apps" ... but once you go back and open that backup and look for the paid apps you will notice they are absent ... try just backing up a single "paid-app" and you will then see the error ...

Apps are not tied to your SIM card. they are tied to the handset. When I factory reset my phone, it did show my previously downloaded apps in the market. But when I replaced my phone, it did not. Apps are NOT tied to your SIM card.

This has been my assumption and therefore if you damage / loose / or have you phone stolen ... then a backup is a smart thing to have ... and
since the "paid-apps" are not on the SDCard and are in a private directory .. the masses of people will not be able to backup their paid apps .. and will have to rely on a vendor by vendor relationship, because google has stated they will not be involved in other than the initial sale ...

More power to you .... rooted is good ... but I am talking about this from the masses point ... I would probably go rooted if nothing clears by the end of this year ... Or some phone comes along to replace G1 and also doesnt have the memory issues ...
