Root New Incredible Owner :) - Couple Questions

Hi,

I just made the switch from a Droid Eris to a Dinc. I've got some experience with rooting and installing custom ROMs but I just wanted to double check a few things before going ahead.

1. Best way to root is unrevoked.com right?

2. I tried CM7 RC1 on my Eris and it was nice (although somewhat slow due to the Eris' hardware) but I think I missed Sense too much. I was a big fan of xtrSense ROM and I think I'd like to do something similar on my Dinc. What Sense ROM would you recommend that's stable, fast, and slightly tweaked? I see a lot out there and I'm having a tough time deciding.

3. Do I need a new kernel? Some ROMs seem to come with them so I'd rather just stick with what's recommended.

Any other advice/tips for me?

Thanks!! :D

Virtuous Rom works really well. 100 percent stable, pretty snappy. Minor tweaks but very stock. It's in rom manager free version. I know everybody's big on gingerbread with the CM7 rom, but it's still slow. Saw it running earlier today on a friend's.

Thats one of the ROMs I've had my eye on. And ya, I agree that I'm not interested in CM7 (as of now).

I also saw some people say that some sense roms will not load with clockwork 3. Is clockwork 3 part of unrevoked? Should I install clockwork 2.5 instead somehow?

And I've also had my eye on Incredibly Re-Engineered, IncRom, and Magnolia as well as some others.

It's tough to decide! As long as it's Sense, I'm fine with some theming or color changes.

The problem with Virtuous ROM is that the developer made a minor mistake. He packaged the kernel from the September leak (November OTA) with the apps from the August OTA. This means some apps (like MMS, Mail, Music, etc.) still have the bugs from the initial froyo push on our device. One bug is that when using music and navigation, music gets cut off permanently. The November OTA fixes this.

There are people who have made patches, and I'm currently putting together a full ROM update. Still, Virtuous is a good ROM, you'll just be slightly behind the other Sense ROMs.

Thanks for the reply. That's good to know.

I'm really liking the Incredibly Re-Engineered ROM because it seems fast, has Sense plus some tweaks and themes, and the dev does a good job updating it.
Just 2 questions:

1. It is based on the Evo framework. Is this okay? Is it still stable? I'm still kinda confused as to why I'd want to run a ROM built on the framework of another phone.

2. Is this ROM stable and pretty much bug free?

Thanks!!

It's perfectly fine to be running EVO framework. A number of Inc ROMs are based on EVO framework (warm 2.2, IR, RR to name a few) The only downfall I know of is VVM will not work. I don't use it so it's not really a downfall in my eyes. You can use Incredible and EVO themes/mods which is nice because there's a lot available for the EVO. The ROM itself is very stable. The only issues are MMS won't send over WiFI (works fine on 3G) and the TV out feature doesn't work at all and never will (EVO framework-EVO has HDMI) It's a great ROM and the developer, Chingy, has done a lot to make this the best sense based ROM available, IMO. Mainly the speed and stability, but also the custom themes, rosies, batteries, dialers, etc that won't break all the optimizations he's done to make the ROM as fast as it is. Hope this helps
