Root Benefits of Rooting MT4g?

I am tossing around the idea of rooting, before I get feedback, I thought I should provide a few facts.

• I have never rooted a phone, and while I know a little about Android, I have no idea how the software operates outside of the power users's obvious knowledge.
• I have a large interest in learning the software.
• I would love the ability to clear off some bloatware and customize this phone to my exact interests.
• I am not aware of all the "perks" this will add to the phone.

Rooting is a double edged sword (and I have been rooting since the G1 was new).

Good:

1. You get the power to remove bloat-ware and "tweak" things if you know how
2. You get to try various other ROM's
3. You get to use some nifty apps that require root

Bad:

1. You now have root and other than removing bloat-ware and using root only apps, not much else to do.
2. You get to try ROM's from other Dev's. Most of which know what they are doing, some only copy and tweak others work without a full understanding of the ROM which leads too----->
3. You get a tweaked ROM that may work faster, is lighter on memory and has fancy features, but in the end, they are less stable and use more battery and some features may be lost altogether (e.g. 720p Camcorder, Video Chat and more because a "custom tweaked Kernel does not support it).

All in all, I have absolutely no problems rooting phones and messing with them, but, ultimately, in the end, I have just gotten tired of always having to flash an update because someone tweaked something wrong and messed things up.

I am now running a stock MyTouch 4G, it's working, it's fine and in the end, I don't have to worry about major issues.

You could always test out root with a temp-root first and see if you like it. It doesn't give you everything perm root does (at least it didn't for me) but it will give you a taste, then you can make it permanant if you like it. If you don't just uninstall the app and restart your phone and your back to stock.

Visionary (you might need version 11) is good for temp root.

Hey guys. I didn't want to create a new topic and looks like here I can find my answers.
I'm new to whole rooting and tweaking phones. I would probably still use my G1 if it wasn't so slow. Got MT4g and with advanced task killer I kill bunch of apps that I didn't even know I had. So looks like I need to just root my phone and delete those apps. Am I understanding it correctly? What if I don't want to use any other ROM I don't have to and can just leave it like that?
Would that work for me? I just want to get rid of amazon mp3, genuine button and some other silly things.

hmmm... i check that post out and its only temporary root, only to get those application from your phone till you reboot it. SO basically those apps are still on your phone and still running when you dont want them but they just not shown anywhere..... i was looking for something more of completely deleting them or stopping them from working on the background all the time.

Android auto-flushes out programs which are idle when you need more memory for active apps. So killing off those programs isn't necessarily gaining you anything. It depends on the app though.

hey Frank. How about apps like amazon mp3 that constantly running on the back ground? i never use it but it always pop up.
Voice dialer, i never used it with my g1 and not looking to use it with my MT4g. news........ rarely i use it, but its still on the back ground. It doesnt do anything to me.... but kind of a little bugs me.
i maybe dont want to delete them completely but just stop them from popping up.

I am using the temp root and removed the so called crap apps. I do not like amazon MP3 and well since i temp rooted and uninstalled (free version) the apps they do not run or start up on their own. If you reboot they will show up again and do their thing. Just load up titanium (free) and remove again. Yes its abundant but it works.

Now if you purchase Titanium (Pro) and Freeze the apps regardless of how many reboot the app will not reload and the icons are gone.

Both versions the app is still part of the system and will always be there HOWEVER they will NOT restart and take some of that precious memory

Only way to completely remove the apps is to do a perm root and load a different rom. At least thats how i understood it.

sorta. you can do that or perm root and use root explorer, or adb, or one of several other apps to delete system apps. just need to make sure that the system is set to R/W.
