Root One click root?

Hey Kelmar, you come from the awesome world of rooting the HTC Hero. How does rooting the Epic compare to the Hero in terms of risks?

What "risks" are you referring to?

Both are pretty painless. Epic uses more "one-click" style which I personally am not a fan of.

Rather than running an RUU to return to stock you would need to use ODIN.

Overall, probably about the same. Just a matter of getting used to a new way of doing things is all.

I thought it was about the same but just the way you said it made me think I was missing something.

I'm all geared up. It'll be nice to use a phone that actually responds when I tell it to do something, unlike the Hero where it has to think about it and sometimes just guess on what I'm trying to do ;)

Nah... pretty much the same risks.

Anytime you start tinkering with root you could do something bad to your phone.

Catch 22. Personally, I feel it's worth the risk. :)

Actually, that's not a bad question. I would like to know as well :)

from what i've read, i believe the concensus is no, you won't get the OTA..... but i'm not positive. but no matter what, you can always Odin back to unrooted stock DI18 and get it then, or wait for a flashable version or an Odin-able version, or wait for a flashable custom version.... a plethora of options in any case!

Hey Kelmar...

I have a Mac and rooted my EVO using unrevoked ( http://www.unrevoked.com ) which was also a one-click method but SUPER easy because I have a Mac.

I read the above XDA link...saw that it appears to be compatible with the Froyo update my wife just got on her Epic...but I was wondering if you have any familiarity with doing the above rooting method on a Mac? Do you know of any other methods that are easy/simple when done on a Mac??

THANKS!!

I wish someone could explain this step by step for someone who has never rooted a phone before. I looked @ the oneclick instructions on the XDA forum but it seems to me there are some assumed steps that aren't clear to someone who's never done this before. Like if I need to connect my phone to my laptop or put my SD card in my laptop via an adaptor then I need that step listed. Also, instructions in plain English instead of jargon would be incredibly beneficial.

I'm sure y'all will laugh, but for right now the only reason I want to root my phone is so I can take screen caps. I could do this on my Epic with 2.1 but with 2.2 it doesn't work.

TIA!

If you do enough reading, you'll figure it out. Nice to know you'll always be able to go back to stock. There are plenty of threads out there about rooting from DI18 (the stock version on the Epic), so I would suggest starting there. Rooting your phone is NOT something you should just waltz into. You need to be certain you know what you're doing before even setting your phone up for a root. There are risks (while they seem to be getting less and less) so this is why you need to do your homework.

Keep reading, ask some questions, but make sure you read, really read, before asking questions. I have a bad habit of just answering questions directly when I know the answers are out there. Causes people to simply start a thread and expect a 1-2-3 step write of of EXACTLY what they need to do. Funny thing is, that's probably already out there...at least a handful of times. Problem is, I just can't help myself, so I'm partially to blame. I don't have near the knowledge of 90% of the guys on this forum.

Another note...don't go to XDA and start asking for things like this unless you have pretty thick skin...they'll flame you in a second. I never take any offense to people online, but some do.

To get back to one of your questions, you should plug your phone into your laptop when rooting, but make sure you have up to date drivers if you're running Windows 7.

I won't do it without a 1-2-3 step by step of exactly what to do. I'm not tech savvy enough for that. I know it's safe as long as a person knows what they are doing. I dug around looking for the 1-2-3 step by step instructions and couldn't find them. Idk, maybe I wasn't searching the right things?

Anyway, I want to root my phone and don't know anyone personally who knows how to do it. So this is all I've got....

Droid newb, if you click the link Kelmar posted in the second reply you'll find that 1-2-3 step by step you're looking for. Follow the directions and it should take no more than 5 minutes to root the phone. If you're still having problems, PM me and I'll try to help further. I don't know if the process can be any further simplified than the xda post though.
