Is anyone using the Aldiko E-Reader App??

I don't have my Eris yet (just a few more days just a few more days), but I have been looking into ebook readers quite a bit. I don't know about paying for books through the software, but I know that you can convert other books so that they will work on Aldiko. Calibre is a pretty popular converter for all sorts of ebooks.

I also just noticed that ereader has software for android now. This is great if you have any old pdb or prc ebooks. They also have a HUGE online store.

I use Aldiko regularly, I love it. It's easily customized so that the reader suits your eyes and reading style. For instance I like to tap one side of the screen or the other to turn a page forward or backward. There is also an option to swipe to turn pages, if you prefer. Screen brightness is easily adjustable and it has a day/night setting. The night setting is good (for me and my eyes anyway) for reading in a dark room.

You can buy (or download for free) an epub formatted book on many sites on the web (even Amazon), so finding them is not a problem. Aldiko has an import function that works nicely (I used it on 4 books just last night) to make the app 'find' ebooks that you've downloaded by some method other than via Aldiko. Importing is a fairly straight forward process. You store you .epub files in a specific location on your SD card, then run the import function. Aldiko tells you which books it's found/imported as it goes along.
I have only used the epub format with the app, However I believe it can use other formats.
Hope that helps.

Yes, that does help... but here's my problem:

I have a dedicated e-reader (Sony PRS-505) that use when at home or traveling. I buy most of my books from the Sony Bookstore. I realize that there are cheaper (or even free) alternatives that will work but I like that the Sony site has the books already formatted so I don't have to worry about converting, etc. (I've used Calibre, btw).

The problem is, I can't find where the Sony software saves the books on the hard-drive. I'd like to buy a book from the Sony store, upload it onto my e-reader and then upload a second copy to my phone (so I can read it when I don't have my e-reader with me).

I think Sony may intentionally make this difficult so you can only download a book to one device at a time or something...

If you have updated to the latest Sony Software then...

The books are kept a folder found here;

My Documents > My Books > Reader Library

You will most likely need to re-download your books in the new epub format. I don't know if Aldiko can read epub books that have a drm attached to them.

I will try this later when I have time.

Thanks... I'm pretty sure I have the new software and I checked my documents but didn't find the .epub files?? Maybe I'll look again when I get home.

Edit: I checked on my work computer and you're right about the location but I only have one file that's labeled as a BBeb Secure Book??

No Success.

I tried using both Aldiko as well as the android version of EReader and neither would allow me to import or add my epub (with a drm) for reading on my droid eris. Hopefully B&N will create a android version of their software that allows this. I would like to be able to reader my ebooks on any and all the devices I own; a ebook reader, my laptop and my phone.

Aldiko doesn't seem to have the ability to even recognize drm protected files while the eReader software can't seem to recognize the credit card infromation used from the Sony store.

The problem is, I prefer to buy books from the Sony store because they're nicely formatted for my Sony e-reader. Unfortunately, due to DRM issues, if I do this, I can't get them to read on my phone. (gotta love format wars!)

I guess I'll have to figure a way to remove the DRM encryption...

Do a google search on DRM removal, there are a few programs that are supposed to remove this. I personally haven't tried one, but I have done the search and found that it's supposed to be doable.

I downloaded eReader and it works great. it's B&N Fictionwise reader. I also purchased and downloaded a current book as well and I'm able to open it and read it and adjust. Works great.

Hello; can you tell me if you mean you were able to install eReader on your HTC Magic? I'm having major issues with importing my books into Aldiko & am looking for alternatives
Thanks

Hello
I'm trying to import ebooks into my HTC Magic & my PC (running Vista) sees the Magic as a temporary drive once I've mounted it, but not at all otherwise. I copy the files into the directory, but when I do the import into Aldiko, it can't find any files. So far Aldiko have been supportive but useless. Any ideas?

Thanks

I have two thoughts, both based on errors that I have made in the past.
1) Aldiko is very particular about where the books to be imported are. It tells you on screen exactly where they should be, make sure you've got that right.

2) As long as your phone is connected to your computer Aldiko can't find the files. So unmount and disconnect, then try again.

I guess another thing to check would be to make sure the files you're trying to import are in a format that Aldiko can read. *I* have only ever used epub files, though I believe Aldiko can read more formats than that.

I just got eReader and I'm pretty surprised at how lazily designed it is. As my only current option for reading certain books on my phone, I'll keep it, but Aldiko is far better.

The only customization allowed is font size and type. I wonder if the format is that limited and more options, like color, are impossible.

I hope Aldiko will someday recognize epubs. Great program.
