Help Copying all texts (at once) to SIM card?

I'm getting a new phone sent to me; I'm tired of all the little issues with mine. Anyway, I see a way to copy each individual message to my SIM card (and the way to copy all messages already saved to my SIM to my phone), is there any way to mass copy an entire thread(s) to my SIM card? Or any other way I could get all my texts to my new phone?

Please, anybody. I'm desperate. I don't care if it means I have to root my phone, I can always ... uh ... un-root (?) it before I send it off.

Do you have a microSD card? If so, use SMS Backup from the Market, no root required. It is quick and easy, but it won't save the pictures from MMS messages. If you don't have a microSD card, I would recommend one for other reasons than backup. You can get a 2 GB one online for less than $10.

I get an error when I hit "backup".

The error reads: "XOAuth authorization error. Please make sure you enabled IMAP in your Gmail account settings."

Help?

How do I enable IMAP? Is that something I have to do through my phone, or my gmail account on my computer?

ETA: I figured that out, now for the real test -- to see if it works!

At least, I think I got it. It's all copying over now.

So when I do this, does it allow me to copy my texts to my new Captivate they are sending me, too? I'd assume yes?

Sorry, I should have been more specific about which SMS Backup app I use because there is more than one on the Market. I believe the one you are using is allows you to back them up to your Gmail account, but I am not sure how to restore them. The app I use is extremely simple. It is called SMS Backup and it is by Michele Valentini. I was mistaken earlier that you need an external SD card because you could back your SMS messages to your internal SD card and then copy the SMS messages to your computer through the USB cable.

The app you are using may be better for you if you can figure out how to restore them from your Gmail account because then it backs them up and stores them in a location separate from your phone in one step. The one I use requires you to copy the SMS messages off of the internal SD card or you will lose them when you get a new phone.

Ok, I'm pretty sure it copied them all over! One last question though, and then I'll be done (or at least I hope!).

I can see that it made a new folder, SmsBackup, and then I can see the globe icon, as well as another folder named "logs". Is there any way I can verify that the texts were copied over before I delete them off my phone? When I click on the globe, it just brings up a blank white page.

When I copy them via USB cord and I try to open them, it opens them in my web browser and I get this message --

The XML page cannot be displayed.

Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

I guess it's not all that important though. I suppose I could just wait for my new phone to come and then don't delete them off my (old) phone until I double check they are on my new phone.

Ok, I suppose I have a few more questions.

When I click that "restore" button, what is the difference between "Restore SMS" and "Restore SMS 2.x" ?

And then once I restore the messages, it'll put them into the same format as before, right? So if I have 539 texts to John Smith, it'll put all 539 text messages into one thread, right? It won't give each text message it's own thread?

When you restore, you will want to use the Restore 2.x, because you have Android 2.1 or 2.2. I have used it several times and when it puts them back it puts them back as threaded conversations.

The globe file is the XML file that it stores the SMS messages with. It creates a new XML file and labels the XML file with a date and time each time you save your SMS messages. You should be able to open that file on your computer with Wordpad or Notepad and see a lot of formatting and your text messages. It would be very difficult to confirm you have all of them in this format though, so I would recommend what you suggested, restoring to your new phone before deleting them from your old phone.

Well ... I got my phone today!

But.

I can't get my texts copied over? There are about 4600 of them, and at first it would copy over to about 529 and then would upbruptly stop copying them. I went and deleted some threads, and it got about 60% copied over and then my phone shut off.

Anyway, so I tried to copy what I had. Nope. It won't restore them. It just says, "Error while loading" and won't do it.

Sigh.

What gives?!

I've tried copying the file to my SD card, and then I've tried moving the file to my SD card. Neither works.

It's 6 to 8 years since any of the members contributing to this thread have visited, so I don't expect you will get an answer.

The popular "SMS Backup and Restore" will do the job though.
