So me being a stubborn individual and wanting the best for which i pay every month ive been experiencing issues with my ascend the past month or so and so i brought it in to cricket to see what would be the best thing to do. 1. Get it replaced and get another ascend or. 2. Get a zio in placement for the ascend. Granted ive had the ascend since release day in november but with all this update and this supposed "new phone" coming out(which ive failed to find out what it is) i'm not sure what my best outcome would be or what i should do so from here so if any and all should express what i should do please feel more than free to help me on this dilemma,

thank-you

Hello Z! So is what you are saying that Cricket is willing to trade out the phone for you based on something being wrong with your Ascend?

If so, you might want to consider the Zio as soon as Cricket gets it back in the lineup. As I understand it, all Zios have been removed and will be replaced with 2.2 stock when they are for sale again, after the upgrade is officially out. This being the case, I would definitely wait for that to happen if I were you. If you try to trade now you might wind up with a refurbished Zio that still has 1.6 platform and will have to suffer through the update yourself.

These are my thoughts:

Personally I love the Ascend. But then you probably already know that. :p One of the reasons I love this phone is because of the manufacturer who made it: Huawei. They are the world's 2nd largest telecom manufacturer and have been making handsets for the big carriers for years now, only under their names. IE: Motorola, Samsung, Nokia etc. Actually far too many to name. Kyocera, maker of the Zio, on the other hand has not had the same experience with handsets, as their main priority has been solar cells and printers which they market under that brand name Copystar.

That being said, if you look at the specs of both phones you will see very little difference. They are both approx the same size and are similar in design, each having a trackball, same resolution, same internal memory, same size camera (no flash or autofocus) and same size processor basically. But just because of this it doesn't mean all the internal working parts will be the same. ;)

Huawei Technology far exceeds Kyocera.

When the Zio is out with 2.2 it will be much more appealing. I don't know what the sound is like. The sound on the Ascend is not the best IMO but it's acceptable. No upgrade is going to improve that. LOL

So, given that maybe the basic technology isn't all that important to you as long as the phone has decent specs, you can look at the phones side by side to attempt to reach a better decision of what to do:

The Ascend and the Zio are both very attractive and sleek phones. I'm quite sure the Zio is very nice in the flesh. I haven't personally seen one but I know that Zio owners like their phones other than the 1.6 platform it originally came with. Slowwwww...very very slow. LOL

2.2 most definitely makes a difference for Zio owners coming from 1.6 to 2.2. Big change!

So basically at this point it is up to you to decide what you want to do. I would imagine that the Zio will be more expensive than the Ascend when it is reintroduced with 2.2. It retails for something like $249 now. Since they don't have it in the lineup anymore I don't really know but I'm sure there will be rebates, etc. just like before.

If Cricket is willing to trade you straight up you might want to consider the Zio.

Personally, if it were me, I would hold out for the Ascend 2.2 upgrade. Why? Because o/a I think the Ascend is a far better device than the Zio. Anything made by Huawei is going to be better.

In addition I have had my Ascend for 3 months now and have done every single thing imaginable to it and it is still working. That in itself should be a great testimonial! LOL

If you can wait, there are more new phones that will be hitting Cricket soon and you might be sorry you settled for the Zio when you could have the X5 or the new Optimus, both with 2.2 out of the box.

That's about all I can really say about the Zio vs the Ascend.

Of course here in the Ascend Forum we really do love our Ascends! :)

So maybe this might have been written from a slightly biased point of view.

If you take a look at the Zio Forum here you will see very little activity. Ascend has moved up to the 22nd most active phone forum here in the entire Android Forum. That's saying a lot since it has only been around since Nov 2010. ;)

There are exciting things in the future for Huawei.

I can't say for sure that the Ascend will get 2.2 but I am about 90 percent positive it will be out sometime in March.

For me, since my phone is rooted and there are other custom roms out there, like the Icarus and the unofficial 2.2 Froyo I am not too concerned if we get it or not. It would be nice but for $100 bucks I think this phone is a smoking deal!

I hope this helps you some with your decision. I'm sure others will be here to offer their opinions as well.

Just do what feels best to you and you can't go wrong!

:)

Hope this helps!!!

I did some research on this before I got my ascend, but with the zio having 1.6, it was no contest. Now, with the zio getting 2.2, it's time to take another look. After some googling and youtubering, I've come up with some interesting facts.

Display: zio-wvga 480x800^
Ascend-hvga 320x480

Camera: zio-autofocus, no flash^
Ascend-no autofocus, no flash

RAM: zio-512mb^
Ascend-256mb

headphone jack: zio-3.5^
Ascend-2.5

The zio also has a dedicated gpu which should make games play smoother. (can't remember my source on that, so if I'm wrong don't shoot me)

The main criticism of the zio is the screen was slow and unresponsive. The upgrade may have fixed that,i don't know.
So on paper, the zio seems to win by a landslide, but I still wouldn't trade my ascend for one. Unless the screen issue on the zio is fixed, that is a deal breaker. Also, the build quality of the ascend seems to be nicer. And I just like it ! Call me crazy, but I'd go with the ascend. All of the cool kids are doing it !

Gmash- These are the exact things that ive noticed and is exactly what puts the should i? in my wager as to whether or not i should trade out, granted this is by far the best cricket theyve had in a long while and is simply the rreason i bought it(android) in the first place but as i get more and more ansy i feel like if i do go zio im not sure if ill like it or regret getting it then being stuck with it lol. With zio going 2.2 does that really change much besides the firmware and look of the theme lol?. yes it might be faster and all but does it in the long run beat the ascend........2.2?

Here's the rub, Z! For all of us (mostly) the Ascend or Zio (either one) is just an entry level android for us. So basically it doesn't matter a whole heck of a lot which phone you have as long as they both have similar O/Ss.

Why? Because we are all going to move up just as soon as the X5 gets there. It's just the way it is. The people posting here in this forum are not going to be content with the hardware on either phone now that they have entered into the world of Android.

So now we're basically into what's the better make: Kyocera or Huawei ?

My money is definitely on Huawei. But then you already know how I feel.

LOL

I'm going with the X5 just as soon as it comes out but I'll keep my Ascend to play with. :D

Any info or vids on the X5?

Here's the specs from Engadget:

Huawei was right on cue here at CES today, announcing the US version of its IDEOS X5 mid-range Android smartphone. This device uses the same formula as the original IDEOS (also known as the Comet for T-Mobile) and aims to provide a decent product at a competitive price. Although we already knew the specs, this was our chance to play with the IDEOS X5 and gather more information. The phone looks elegant and feels solidly built, with a 3.8-inch WVGA capacitive display behind glass in front and 1500mAh battery behind soft-touch plastics in back, all wrapped in an 11.4mm-thin body. Take a look at the gallery below, and hit the break for additional details and our hands-on video.
Huawei IDEOS X5 hands-on

On the hardware front, the 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7230 CPU is paired with an Adreno 205 GPU and 512MB of RAM. The radio is tri-band HSPA+ with support for AWS (900 / 1700 / 2100MHz). There's a second microphone in the back of the phone for noise cancellation, as well as SRS for audio enhancement and an FM radio. The 5 megapixel camera, which features autofocus and a single LED flash, also supports 720p HD video recording. There's a microSD card slot in addition to 4GB of built-in storage, as well as a video output capability. Regarding software, the IDEOS X5 runs vanilla Android 2.2 and features Flash 10.1, Swype, and hotspot functionality. While the phone won't break any speed records, it's sufficiently fast, scoring 1470 on the Quadrant test. Huawei didn't disclose any pricing information or carrier partnerships (although T-Mobile seems likely with AWS on board). Availability is slated before mid-2011 with -- sadly -- no plans for Android 2.3 at this point in time.

The X5 has been released in most of the rest of the world now so it should be hitting the carriers here in the U.S. any day now. It's passed the FCC and will probably show up at T-Mobile first (as reported). The CDMA version should be launched by Cricket late March or Mid 2011. I've seen conflicting reports but Huawei is very aggressive and Cricket wants this phone to stay competitive so I'm sure the pressure is on. Nothing is set in stone...

I would hold out if I were you. JMO

Okay, theres a guy at work who has the zio, and he let me play with it for a few minutes last night. Now that I've had some hands on time with it, there is NO WAY I would trade an ascend for it. Granted, it was still running on 1.6, but still, the phone itself feels like a toy. This thing is so light, it feels like one of those hollow fake phones they have at the store. Seriously, it's a trip how cheap it feels. I would be afraid it would crack like am egg if I dropped it or something. Stick with the ascend.

So it's cheaply made (Or feels like it anyways)? I have never seen one myself. Is it slower than our Ascend too? Or just made badly? I know I've already had my ascend plop onto the ground once. I can't imagine if it would just "Break". I mean, I did have a case on it but cases can't save something that is easily broken anyways..

Yeah it felt really cheaply made. Like I said, it felt hollow. As for the speed, it was still on 1.6, so thats not fair to judge. It felt like you kinda had to push down a little hard on the screen to move the home screens around. I don't know if that is something that will improve with the update or not. You should check out some youtube videos. His didn't seem as bad as some of the videos I watched, but he barely had any apps on it. He didn't know anything about his phone. I told him he would be getting 2.2 soon, and he was like "what's that?" Lol. We're all dying for it over here! Ignorance is bliss, right?

I'm already waiting for the day that someone here or at myascend will make a gingerbread unofficial rom with working MMS. LOL. I wish I could be all non-chalant about getting this update! Never going to happen. I am always modifying all my toys. XD

I was thinking about starting a pool for when we finally do get the update, how long before the first "so when are we getting 2.3?" thread pops up! I call 1 minute! Lol
