Google Navigator not doing voice directions

My google navigator used to give me directions by voice. As in, it would actually speak the directions to me as they are coming up.

Recently it's stopped doing that, and instead just pings when a new direction is coming up (like a little heads up that I should check my phone for the next direction)

I've looked through the settings and options, and I don't see anything about this. Anyone else having issues with this, or know how to fix this?

Menu>Settings>Text to speech>Install voice data
May have to reboot phone
It's not working for me. The "install voice data" on text to speech is still greyed out.
I have had voice directions on Google navigation. Brilliant. On the return journey no voice directions.
Can someone advise? I have had a trawl around the forum but there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer. What information do I need to reactivate the voice?
I am using an Xperia 10 with the most uptodate software ( upgraded Aug 11) and am in the UK.
Many thanks.

Try playing with the volume physical rocker switch while in navigation mode. My memory is that there is a separate setting for navigation volume that drove me crackers once when I accidentally gripped the phone to tight in navigation mode. Playing with those switches when not navigating just adjusted the phone ringer.
