Hi i've had my HTC Desire for a week now and when I turn my phone on there is an Icon that appears in the top left of the screen that I cannot identify in the manual. Its a semi circle at the top going down to a point at the bottom with a white dot in the middle and an exclamation mark after it. It disappers after 5-10 seconds when I first turn the phone on. For info I'm on Orange.

Does anyone know what this means?

Thanks

Mark

I may be wrong, but what you describe sounds very much like the "Wi-Fi is on and wireless networks are available" notification icon. It's in the HTC Desire User Guide in the "Phone Status and Notifications" section (page 26 in the English version).

I've never seen this on my Desire, so I'm not sure what would make it appear, unless it's just to remind you to turn the wi-fi off if you don't want to use it. If wi-fi is on when you turn the phone off, it will come back on when you switch it phone on again - wasting battery power if you haven't configured any wi-fi connections, so it's worth leaving it off if you don't need it.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for response but its not that icon.

The shape I described is one continuos line with a single white dot in the middle.

Sounds like the symbol for 'Unable to detect time zone settings'. I used to get this every morning, but haven't for a while. I think you get it if the phone has no signal when it's trying to sync the time to the network. (Signal is totally pants where I live).

I've seen a complete list of all the icons on a web page somewhere, will post the link if I can find it again.

Edit: can't find the page, but can't you drag the status bar down to see what it means?
If it's only for 5-10 secs, it's probably nothing much to worry about...

After some experimenting, guided by SiHa's comment, I've got it solidly now, so I was able to drag down the notification menu and read it. It says "Set Current Time" and offers to help you set your location and timezone etc. If it goes away and your clock and location are OK after startup, it's probably just a slow response from the network. As it goes away after a few seconds, it shouldn't be anything to worry about.

To get the fault, I swapped my Orange SIM card for an old O2 SIM card which doesn't provide a data connection.

Elsewhere on the web it's been described as an upside down teardrop outline with a white dot in the middle, and an exclamation mark to the right (which matches the OP's description better than my first guess). Also doesn't appear to be documented in any of the usual places. I couldn't find it in the Android icons, so I guess HTC should know something about it, but aren't telling.

Perhaps the shape is supposed to match up with the Google Maps pins for locations - just a wild guess, as usual!
