Is there a way to organize folders?

I tried a couple of the programs that allow you extra home screens but like some people, I found out running into more troubles.

I decided to create folders and name them on my home page and then put various shortcuts in each folder. I have one for games, one for utilities one for multimedia etc.

My question is, how can I get these to be listed in alpabetical order?
Or is there a way that I can organize the apps in the order that I want them (maybe a list view vs. having the icons listed)?

I realize I could delete every icon in the folder and then manually add them in alphabetical order BUT if I find a new app and move it to a folder, it always puts the icon at the bottom of the list.

Hmm this is a GOOD question. I second this. I am using panda home and I find using the multiple "docks" is better than having 9 screens.

I just joined this forum to recommend Apps Organizer, too. Once you install Apps Organizer and apply a label to each app, create a Shortcut by selecting Apps Organizer from the Shortcuts menu. That will take you to a list of your labels (which you can customize). Once you select the label you want, it inserts the icon associated with that label (which you also can customize) on your home screen, and lists all the apps using that label alphabetically.

This is exactly what I have done BUT what I am wanting to do is re-arrange the icons in my folders(preferrably in alphabetical order). As I download and install NEW apps, they always go to the bottom of the list.

I do have app organizer and that is nice BUT I guess I was looking for a way to save me a step (instead of having to load up app organizer and then look through my labels and then find the file I want - I could open the folder on my homepage and then open up the file I want to access inside the folder.

As I explained in my earlier post, you can hard press your home page to bring up the menu allowing you to create a shortcut. Select "Shortcuts" then select "Apps Organizer," then choose the Label you want to create a shortcut folder for (e.g., "Games"). The games icon (a game controller, or another icon of your choice) will appear as a shortcut on your homepage. When you open the games shortcut, you'll see that all the apps that you've labeled "Games" in Apps Organizer are listed in alphabetical order. You can create as many labels as you want in Apps Organizer. I always go into Apps Organizer first, when I download an app, and attach a label to it, so it will appear in my shortcut folder associated with that label.

Right there with you. I am presently using the same tedious method of pulling the shortcuts out of the folder and then back into the folder in alphabetical (or whatever desired) order. It's a pain in the backside but once it's set up, I don't often add new entries.

What I like is that I've put all my speed dials in one folder and then just go there instead of the phone to contact people directly. I like it MUCH better than having to remember what number/letter I assigned to which contact on my Blackberry.

If you're asking about Apps Organizer shortcuts, yes you can change the folder icons. The default Apps Organizer labels have icons already associated with the default labels, and if you create a new label, an icon is automatically assigned to it. If you go to the "Labels" tab in Apps Organizer, hard press on the label for which you want to change the icon, then select "Change Icon." It gives you several options, including, among others, the default Android icons, Android Image Gallery, and any icon packs you've downloaded. Just choose the icon you want and that will be displayed as the shortcut for that label on your homepage.

As I said above, when you open the shortcut, it displays all apps to which you've assigned that label, in alphabetical order. When you download a new app, if you go into Apps Organizer and assign a label to that app, it will automatically be added to your shortcut folder alphabetically.

Apps organizer does work great as a Folder Alternative for Apps, but not for shortcuts.

I have a folder called URLs and another called Speed Dial.

Problem with the default droid folders is you can't rearrange the icons. I want to put my URL shortcuts in a specific order (not A - Z, but Most Popular for me). I also want to move my speed dial contacts around in the folder (even A - Z would be nice). If you have all your direct dial shortcuts organized in a folder and then add a new contact later, it won't be in alphabetical order.

Anyone have a solution?

It's a hassle, yes, but hopefully you don't need to do it too often. Or, like on Seinfeld, are you constantly re-prioritizing your speed dials based on how you're feeling about certain 'friends'? ;-)

Else, hopefully, Google can build in sorting functionality soon!

nycebo, um.. yeah that's the hassle I've been looking for a better solution for. Still looking for better solution.. as pulling out all the icons and putting them back in to reorganize is not an option (it's ridiculous). With such a high tech device and the amount of $$ they spent developing this (you would think they had focus groups) no one else encountered this issue. I see hundreds of threads online about this. Hopefully we (early adopters) are not the first focus group.

I don't know how much some of you are on your phones, but I use this for business so I have a lot of contacts. I try to keep speed dial under 30 but it changes often (sometimes monthly - sales calls or current hot issues). Hence, the current way to manage that folder is unacceptable.

For now, the better way for me to manage a speed dial type of system is to use the contacts/favorites or if in the car the voice search function seems to work much better than voice dial. Note that any background noise makes voice search much more inaccurate and even worse for voice dial.

I hope newer OS versions will allow reorganization of shortcuts in folders and/or someone develops an app for that. It would be especially useful for my URL folder which is faster than bookmarks. BTW - the Dolphin browser rocks!

If anyone discovers an app that allows reorganization or labeling of shortcuts, please do post here.. Heck... I'll even pay for that app.

A quick androlib found me: abcOrganizer lite v1.2 lite Application for Android | Tools

abcOrganizer. Now, abc stands for apps, bookmarks, and contacts.. and it seems to be very similar to App Organizer. If it works the sameway, but can also hook into bookmarks and contacts, I think we've found our solution. But, uh. I'm lazy and don't really need this, personally. Soooo.. Give it a shot for me?

The lite version is AdSense, the one-pound ($1.43?) paid app is not.

Installed App Organizer --- ABSOLUTELY AWESOME alternative.

Yes, the Android system should be able to sort shortcuts within folders -- but honestly, after taking 30 minutes or so to get everything set up into their respective categories, and then SHORTCUT those APP ORGANIZER folders onto the home pages -- SOOOO much nicer, and all in alphabetical. Fantastic app.

And even though it's a little thing, it takes any unassigned apps and puts in an OTHER APPS category, which was great because looking through the original APPS (pull up) folder it was easy to overlook unorganized apps.

Fantastic solution -- and better than what I wished Android would do natively. However, that apps folder should be allowed to add native folders for organization anyway. That's a huge oversight in my opinion.

Also, once you get all the labels setup, download some ICON PACKS and change the icons into something cool -- then, instead of having a bunch of boring FOLDERS on the main screen, you can have some nice colorful icons that MAKE SENSE!

I seem to have accidentally moved an app organizer folder from one screen to another, and can't seem to figure out how I did it. Is there a trick to moving a group from one screen to another?

Long-press on the folder and drag it to the left or right edge of the screen. It should slide over to the next screen and allow you to drop it there
