Root help with root (sorry)

tried to root a friends verizon samsug facinate today.

used these methods
[Odin] Full EB01 Froyo leak, packaged ROMs w/root and new clockwork **UPDATED**2/11 - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum
^this one said something about wrong md5?
(tried multiple ones).

neither worked for me. and of course z4 was a no go.

we were using my droid usb cable, also tried a samsung cable but not the correct one. one of the methods called to be sure and use the one that came with the phoen. we will attempt that tomorrow.

anyone know what im missing out on here. i hate to take the guys phone home to do it....

Try It with the right cord. Are you getting any error messages in odin?

EDIT- just realized you aren't at odin yet...

Apr the reply. Isn't odin the system I used in one of those methods from laptop to phone.
It errered about md5

This is for after you have rooted your phone.

Have you downloaded and installed the Samsung drivers to the computer? Made sure you have debugging on?

drivers in, debug set.

and i saw this which made me think odin was pre-root and would give root;

i may have figured it out, i didnt put it on the root of my c drive

i never figured how different this would be then the droid x.
once i get root does it stick? or could it become unrooted on its own?

Yeah it can be a little confusing. Odin is what lets you apply ClockWork after the root.

It should stick! Once done the only way to have it unroot is when you are messing with different Roms and kernels. But that could just lead to some bad things....

yeah from one oem to another its a world of difference...some people who've only had htc phones immediately ask hboot questions when they get a fascinate and where to get ruu and former moto users ask where they can get sbf files from....every phone is different, even more so when going with different manufacturers....can be a tad humbling at times
