too many rings before answering

One thing I've noticed with my HTC Hero (Sprint) is that I have a very short period of time to answer an incoming call before the caller is directed to voice mail. When I do answer the phone people are routinely telling me that it rang 4 or more times before I answered even though, from my perspective, I answered it rather quickly.

Could this have something to do with using downloaded ringtones? Perhaps, while the phone should be ringing, instead, it is loading the ringtone off the sdcard.

Try this below, worked for me :)

type *#61# type this as if you typing in someone’s phone number then press call. it should show your current ring time

then type *004*<voicemail number>*11*<delay in seconds>#
where it says voicemail number put in your service providers voicemail number........where it says delay in seconds type in 30 if that’s what you want

e.g. on ORANGE *004*07973100123*11*30#

then press call.

then type *#61# then press call and it should show the change in ring time.

When I enter any of the above sequences, after I press CALL, it always says, "The feature code you have entered is not valid ..."

Did you look into the thread I found over at the Sprint Hero forum?

Yes. Some good information.

Here's the link for anybody else who is interested:
Hero by HTC:Ring "lag" as some mentioned

The bottom line is that the HTC Hero is basically a "pager." People call you ... you don't answer (because it goes to voicemail so quickly -or- they hangup after the 4th ring) ... you find out that you have a missed call ... and you call them back. Isn't that what the pagers did in the 80's?

The reason a lot of people are not aware of the problem with the HTC Hero is because people are more into texting these days. Nowadays, most people receive more text messages than they do phone calls. You can go through an entire day and not get a single incoming voice call. The people that are noticing this problem (like those in this thread) are the people who actually do get a fair number of incoming calls - and they value those calls.

Imagine if you were a real estate agent who had an HTC Hero that rang ... and rang ... and rang ... and rang? At a minimum, even if you were Quick Draw McGraw with your cellphone, it makes you appear somewhat unresponsive.

Ring ... ring ... ring ... ring ... ring ... "Hello!"

HTC needs to figure this one out - and fast. Once the word gets out that the HTC Hero is an expensive pager, sales are going to drop rapidly. They should have their engineers working on this around the clock. Imagine - a phone that does not reliably deal with incoming calls. Ridiculous!
