Help Buying my 1st Android phone- Metro

I'm currently with Metro so I'm looking into the Ascend and the LG Optimus. They both seem pretty similiar however the Optimus comes with Android 2.2, after reading the threads here it seems that the Ascend may or may not get the 2.2 upgrade. I've never had an Android phone so I'm unsure of the difference in the two Android versions, and if I should use that to base my decision on, assuming the Ascend may not ever get the upgrade. I'd appreciate any recommendations between the two phones, I'm really at a loss with this because I really don't know a thing about Android phones

Id get the Optimus over the Ascend. Its more beast-er.
But the Ascend is cheaper, and still a very good phone.
But this is just my opinion.

I think the Optimus has a better camera, multitouch, and longer battery life. Thats would be enough for me to cough up extra for it if I werent such a cheapo. haha
But I still love my Ascend hardcore. Best phone Ive had in a while.

If you really cant decide, you should just flip a coin.
Either way, youll end up with a sweet phone.

I have both the Ascend and Optimus in my home. My ascend has a battery that lasts just as long. Personally, It's about the usage of the phone and your settings. You can make a battery last much longer than normal if you know how to use certain apps and settings properly. Multi-touch is nice but, I've got to admit I've had more force closings on the Optimus. Also, My major gripe on the Optimus is that it has run out of memory at least 3 times already. I have just as many apps (More actually) on the Ascend and never had that problem even once. Even before I had Icarus installed and it was stock! Plus now that I've got Icarus 1.1 on my Ascend, It's speed is definitely up to par with the Optimus. The Optimus has a slightly smaller screen, It is also a tad bit heavier. Another major drawback on the Optimus is the lack of the trackball and hang up/call buttons. Call me old fashioned (I like my call and hang up buttons physical!) but, I like the ability to not have the call button in my dock. I can simply press the physical call button and it bring up my dialer/call log/contacts/etc. For me this is a huge thing as it gives me space to put a better app in it's place! I also adore my cute little trackball. It makes going on websites with tiny links so much easier! Then again I'm getting all technical. Everyone has their own preferences. ^^.

Thank you both for your input. I'm leaning towards the Ascend, but still unsure. What is the major difference between Android 2.1 and 2.2, should that influence my decision?

Between the Icarus mod and 2.1. Honestly there is only a few minor differences with 2.1 and 2.2 (In my opinion). I mean I'm sure other people can probably name exact differences but, For me it's not big enough for me to really remember. No matter what, Unless you root and remove bloatware your phone is going to have less memory and less speed. Even with the optimus I have constant force closings due to running out of memory. It's rooted too, With a cache cleaner! X.x

I was also tied between the LG Optimus M and the Ascend. I got the Ascend, because with the mail in rebate it would cost $99 and that's a STEAL. That is like $50 cheaper than my POS Samsung Messager II that I had! And this phone is AWESOME so far, I got it yesterday.

I also picked the Ascend over the LG Optimus because I thought the Optimus was UGLY.

The internet on my Ascend is super fast and I am very pleased with this phone so far.

I'm on Metro too and I just got the Ascend because they have just begun the process of replacing all of their CDMA phones with 4G LTE phones. I was debating between the two devices like you too but I figure I save $50 and get the Ascend. The Ascend and Optimus are both CDMA phones. Metro just came out with the Indulge and there will be a few more android 4G LTE devices coming out by the end of this year. You might as well get the cheaper device in the Ascend and swap it for a new LTE android phone within 6 month, a year or so. The Ascend is a pretty cool phone for the price!!

Right from the box. So yeah, Compared with the some odd $200 and something I spent on the Optimus...I really have to say the Ascend is the ideal budget phone! I'm certainly not going to be out a load of cash if they come out with an LTE device I like.

Wow. This phone is super heavy. I bet it would make a great weapon if I have to throw it at someone. Yeah, That's what I thought. Go figure right?

Apparently the Ascend is heavier than the Optimus I read.

I also read that it's heavier than my Samsung Messager II which does NOT feel right, because the Samsung Messager II is a heavy brick and I HATED it because of how heavy it was. The Ascend doesn't feel heavy to me.

Both phones in my hand, Both with same type of cover case, The Optimus feels like a little paper weight. Just because it's lighter doesn't mean it's always cheaper. Think about those tiny itty bitty hand held computers. Just because they are lighter, Doesn't mean they aren't fully capable, Nor in anyway "Cheap". I constitute cheap not by the weight of the phone, But by the actual materials and the way they feel. My Ascend, With or without it's cover, Does not feel cheap. Just my opinion of course. ^^.
