LG Optimus 2X or Nexus S?

I've been looking over some reviews today comparing the Optimus with other phones, and I've got to say I think I might've rushed my buying decision, the Nexus S actually looks like a very very good phone, the camera is amazing on it, just look at these pictures below:

Nexus S:

LG Optimus 2x:

The LG Optimus' camera looks more grainy to me, I know it's an unfair comparison because of the different resolutions and actual picture content, but that Nexus S picture look so good. Also, the battery life of the Nexus S is supposedly better, it also runs stock android gingerbread which is a major plus for me, and it means a lot of developer support for it. The Nexus S costs less as well on a carrier I'd prefer. What do you guys think?

This must be the first meeting of the support group then. LOL:D

I,ll go first.

My name is Batfink and I'm an LG Optimus 2X addict (and I haven't even got one yet).

But seriously, I have just asked my wife for you as she has studied photography. Cutting a long story short, you cant use two different photos to compare two different cameras. There's way too many variables. Also you cant really expect ant truly good images to come from a combined device.

The Nexus is a good phone, no doubt about it and if you have genuine price / carrier issues then that will swing it for you. But with a free choice. I wouldn't swap NFC (isn't NFC just a marketing tool for google any way?), plasticky feel and instant gratification for 1080p / 720P video, dual core, HDMI mirroring, and FM radio (sorry but I love that one) I could go on.
Battery life is a bit of a red herring, your going to have to charge any smart phone daily.

NOW FOR A CONFESSION:eek::eek::eek::eek:
I pre-orderd a sim free 2X from expansys the day it was listed, then 3 days later got cold feet and cancelled. A few nervous days later I regained my composure, re-ordered then a day later when the contracts came out cancelled and re-ordered.

BTW the image sizes in your post are on the large size, try Free Online Image Editor

Good point, to be honest I'm getting mood swings all over the place with this phone, but I've looked at lots of pictures from both devices in low and good light conditions and the nexus s' photo's look sharper and have a better colour to them.

But I most likely will get the Optimus 2X, and I will also most likely cancel my order with vodafone if any other carrier gets the phone, because frankly, vodafone is horrible in my area.

the integral question should be what you get your phone for?

The camera on a phone doesn't matter to me at all (aside from the casual shot once every 3 months or so).

To me, the striking point on the Optimus 2x is its (somewhat) future proof dualcore (i hope fully can get all the neat stuff, once android starts supporting multiple cores) and it looks like this one will have a neat dev communit. Also this one has yet to be updated to Gingerbread, and I'm very excited how this phone will perform on 2.3

On the other side, the Nexus S is an incredible Smartphone for todays time, but it is based on the Galaxy S, which itself is almost outdated like the Desire or Desire HD. If you change phones often, you might not be affected by that, but I usually keep my phones for at least 2 years, and I want them to be capable of the stuff I throw at them during those 2 years. In 2 years, I think you will be better off with a Tegra-based phone than with a Hummingbird (was it?) platform.

Yes. We need more choice on network providers. I live very close to work so dont really have the need for 3G as I have WIFI at work, 3G kills my battery so I turn it off most of the time. I'll do that on the
2X too.
No devise if perfect and pursuit of it is folly, but why cant we stop doing it? LOL. I suppose we just want the best.

aMpeX was saying he was all set on a HTC desire HD (another good phone)

Are you a keen photographer?

I'm going to be using the camera's 1080p recording for my guitar covers yes, and I will be using the camera phone a lot but If I was a photographer I'd spend my x-mas money on a standalone camera, like you said, all this is is a pursuit for the best, and you guys have convinced me that the Optimus is better :D i just need to hold it out until i get it, im sure i will like it.

Everytime I go past a Carphone Warehouse I keep going in and playing with the NS - I love its feel in the hands and bright screen and am tempted by the prospect of not having to wait for updates all the time, along with big developer support. It will be hard for me not to be tempted to go for it next week when my upgrade date arrives - I will just have to steer clear of it completely until the O2X lands next month as I'm sure I will regret it in the long run - the superior spec is just too much to ignore.

Good news gents, lets stick together.

One problem with the LG is the lack of an official website yet! I'm sure our problems would be halved if we could end a nights surfing buy landing on a good looking and informative manufactures website.

The Nexus website is so good. Lots of clear info, good looking as well.

Great timing as I can now confess that I've jumped the waiting ship and gone for the Nexus S! After much consideration I came to the conclusion that I would never be happy waiting for updates or developer support however impressive the LG/Samsung/Motorola dual core specs seemed. I've even been running Gingerbread on my 18 month Hero with numerous tweeks so could never go back to 2.2. I have always liked the design and build of the NS (I realise this is personal) and have spent a lot of time playing with it in every Carphone warehouse I have passed by. I decided at the weekend that enough was enough and I would go with my heart rather than my mind so there you are!
Since getting it I was able to immediatey root it and flash a custom ROM (Cyanogenmod 7) and so the fun has begun. I have to say it is totally fast and smooth in everything I do on it - even 3D gaming like Dungeon defenders and Asphalt look superb. I have no regrets whatsoever and get to enjoy myself now with the reassurance of no waiting months for updates/bugfixes. I will review the situation in 12 months when dual core is better established with optimised software, but for the time being I can't see how much faster in real life you would need a phone to be than the NS.

I was wondering if/when one of us would crack. There's a lot of negatives associated with being on the first wave of these dual cores.
I would have perhaps jumped my self but my friend who cracked a month or so ago, plumped for a Nexus S and was not impressed with the core functionality, blue tooth and calls dropping, random rebooting, freezing, sub 12 hour battery life. He needed a reliable handset for business use so it had to go.:(
Are you having any of the above problems? Or does your custom ROM improve things?

I reckon if you wait a year you'll be right at the start of the quad core hype.. LOL the saga continues.

Bluetooth works perfectly with my in-car handsfree. Battery life is at least as good as my Hero but I am on it continuously playing at the moment. I just had my 1st reboot, but to be fair I do have it overclocked @ 1400mhz! It is precisely this tweakability that I realised was my main priority and I was never going to get that from an LG branded phone. I would never suggest the NS is the best option for everyone though, but so far I'm totally loving it. Oh yeah - call quality is fantastic compared with my previous phone with better reception and no dropped calls - I was also able to flash the latest baseband to further improve this. The speaker sounds good as well.

Hi everyone.

I am having the same dilemma - I really love the idea of nexus s where i can have latest update of android all the time but I've read about optimus 2x and crucially samsung galaxy s2 which just looks unbelievable. My problem is I don't know whether to wait for a couple of months and get galaxy s2 or optimus 2x probably on quite an expensive tariff or just get the nexus s which i could get now on orange for

Hi everyone.

I am having the same dilemma - I really love the idea of nexus s where i can have latest update of android all the time but I've read about optimus 2x and crucially samsung galaxy s2 which just looks unbelievable. My problem is I don't know whether to wait for a couple of months and get galaxy s2 or optimus 2x probably on quite an expensive tariff or just get the nexus s which i could get now on orange for £25 from carphonewarehouse. I have a BB curve 8900 which I've loved having but its too slow and I would like a phone with a nice touchscreen to view internet and movies on but one that isn't as giant as the HTC HD7 and I can't afford to fork out couple of hundred quid for iphone! I will mainly use new phone for internet, watching movies/youtube, facebook etc, maps, music and occaisional photos but not too bothered with megapixel count as blackberry camera was fine for basic pictures and thats only 3MGP.

If I get google nexus S will it completely be out of date in 18months??? I know dual cores are the new thing but I'm not a huge gamer and won't be downloading films just transferring them from my laptop so surely I don't need dual core??? also I know that the 16GB is the maximum memory, I think this may be enough as I don't plan on storing lots of movies/songs on phone - probably just put 2 or 3 films on for train journey now and again and i have an ipod so just need a few albums on the phone. The reason I'm torn is the HD quality of optimus 2x and galaxy s2 and the ability to link it to your HD tv although I wont have an hd tv till maybe xmas.

Should I wait for a dual core or get the nexus s?? Sorry this post is so long, need some advice from people who know what they are talking about.

thanks

I can see only one reason to go for the Nexus S - you would be someone who likes delving deep into software and enjoys tweaking and customizing as much as is possible as well as having your software as up to date as you can. This, to be honest will require the skills and confidence to modify the phone in ways that are sometimes risky but will result in a device that is as cutting edge as the LG albeit in a different way.
I finally decided to get the Nexus S for the above reasons - I have already had an Android phone for the past 18 months and have learnt so much - in fact my HTC Hero is running the latest version of Android - ahead of all the dual cores. Any new phone I got had to be this hackable and the new dual cores are not that kind of device.
If you just want a phone to use "out of the box" then the Optimus 2x will be best for you, but I can say that as someone with a fair bit of Android experience that the single core NS is extremely fast and smooth and handles everything (including the latest 3d games) effortlessly - and that's before I overclocked the processor to 1.3 ghz!

Thanks that's a huge help - its unlikely I would be hacking my phone an making custom changes to it as I on't know how to do it and I know its not for the novice phone user.

Just went into carphonewarehouse today and had another look at the nexus s, it looks like the ideal phone for me apart from the fact that Optimus 2x and Galaxy S2 will have better HD capability. I asked about the release date for Optimus 2x which the salesmen weren't too sure about but one I say with certainty that he believed the galaxy s2 would be out end of March so I'm going to go back in then and make my choice looking at the above phones side by side.

thanks again for the help. :)

As a recent Nexus S owner I'm totally loving it, however I honestly think this phone only shines when it is fully rooted and customised - if you are just going to use your phone out of the box you would be better off waiting for one of the new dual core devices.

i had an orange san francisco, caught the bug, had it rooted, clockwork recovery, loaded loads of diff roms on it, really enjoyed that phone, so yeh i guess id be modding anyphone i get lol, my only worrry about the o2x is that all the vid and cam pix ive seen dont look good, i do take a fair few pics, i really want the o2x.... but the release keeps being pushed back, its doin my head in

My NS is overclocked at 1.3Ghz and I think this will more than hold it's own for quite a while to come. When dual core optimized software starts go appear the NS will then fight back by always having the latest version of Android. As someone else said, keeping up with hardware is nigh on impossible and software seems to be the only feasible way of future-proofing.

Thank Batfink for this, but the default camera settings on the 02x aren't the best, and if you see the comparison shots in this XDA thread you'll see the difference when the white balance is lowered and the contrast raised slightly, at least it looks like a massive difference to me :)

There's quite a bit of useful info starting to emerge from O2X community @ XDA developers.:)
LG Optimus 2x - xda-developers

Some seasoned android users have been in possession for about a week now and it's looking quite promising. ie. Fash 10.2. optimised for Tegra soc devises.:)
New flash version 10.2 optimized for Tegra - xda-developers

Access to the "HiddenMenu" looks quite interesting. :)Hidden Menu | Device Test | Full Access | Root Not Required - xda-developers

Rooting, should it be required also looks straight froward.:)

It's not all good though. Decent H.264 decoding seems somewhat elusive.
