There you have it, folks. Apple has just announced the iPad 2, the successor to the portable device that paved the way for all slates to follow. There is no denying the original is the very reason we have highly advanced devices like the newly released Motorola XOOM and upcoming LG Optimus Pad and Samsung [...]

Haha.... why does the iPad2 appear to be behind the Android tablets?
Still no SD card slot, no USB....
Finally an iDevice with HDMI?
The screen resolution is a little low.....
Hell, some of the Chinese tablets look better on paper than this thing.

BUT... I bet the iPad2 coming with an HDMI connector is 'new, magical, and innovative'

Ipad2? LOL.... :D

Is it me or a lot of folks are not blown away by the ipad2? yeah its thinner and a few add on here and there but it still has a boring look to it.

Lets not forget we are talking about an Apple iDevice here...lol I might bet some money it will outsell the iPad 1. Maybe many of us that want an Android tablet are not blown away.

I was swaying in the wind when I saw it still has the same price as the 1. But after reading the fine print starting with an HDMI adapter....it wasnt windy anymore to me for some reason....

And folks sprinkled here n there around the net have said they have an iPad 1....and will wait for an iPad 3.

ipad2 still wins. because the offering is a duo core yet price stays low.

none of the new honeycomb device offers this price point.

still provides a great user experience and its thinner.

not only that the 100 reduction in ipad 1g is pretty big,

simply because all opensource android is so expensive!

Exactly.. Apple isnt stupid. They know that by years end the ipad2 will outsell all of the android tablets put together so why should they really care about the specs of tablets like the xoom?

You make it sound as if there won't be lower cost android tablets. Vizio is planning an android tablet and they know how to sell to the mass market walmart crowd.

I see you dont understand how consumers think for the most part. On my facebook right now damn near everyone on there is talking about getting an ipad2 just because its an ipad. They couldnt care less about the xoom or the playbook or anything else. If you're going to compete with it you have to be bringing something with a BIG advantage.

Your facebook friends probably said the same thing about the latest iphone. In the meantime it turned out that most people were really buying android phones. They just didn't make a big deal about it on facebook.

Apples ultra arrogant, attitude of superiority, and closed locked down Eco-system is the last thing I want.

Nothing would please me more than to witness Android progress into an organized successful mobile operating system utilized by a variety of handset makers.

It will be a real loss and a major setback in the smartphone sector if Android fails.

Even worse, if Apple prevails we will enter a dictatorial era unlike anything ever experienced in the mobile communications field ever.

if the xoom is priced 200 cheaper than ipad then u have a fight really.

but the thing is that only geeks dig this kind of war.

the majority of friends will like a lagless tablet.the manufacturers are killing themselves.

Android will do well. The question is: will motorola do well?

This is still a dumb argument to me. Most people were buying Android phones because Android phones were available on every carrier with PLENTY of them to choose from. Not one single Android phone will EVER outsell the iphone, ever. And im willing to bet money that when the 5 drops on the big 2 this summer that the iphone claims the number 1 spot again. And do you REALLY want to dispute the fact that any tablet will outsell the ipad 2? I'd even bet that it outsells the xoom and the playbook put together.

And last I checked, even though the latest iphone didnt do huge numbers on Verizon.. considering the phone is almost a year old and people are locked into contracts, it STILL was the best selling phone on Verizon ever. Meaning it outsold every Android phone to ever hit Verizon in a month. Now what do you think is going to happen when the iphone 5 comes out? I know some of you hate Apple but sometimes you just have to use common sense. Verizon sold a million iphone 4's in a week. In contrast, Sprint sold 3 million Evo's total from June until now.

I dont see why people make such a big hype over Android outselling the iphone anyways. With 30 Android phones on the market compared to ONE iphone.. SHOULDNT it be outselling it? I mean seriously, even with that big a difference in the number of handsets Android only has 1% more marketshare than IOS. Honestly it shouldnt even be as close as it has been considering the iphone was only available on one carrier. Verizon alone is on pace to sell 11 million iphones this year... one phone. No matter how you cut it or try to sway it, IOS products sell.. period. And had it not been for the iphone and the ipad, would Android phones and tablets even exist?

Sorry but that doesn't make sense. The phone has been out with Verizon a little over a month, how can it be the "best selling phone on Verizon ever"??

Do you mean to say the iPhone has had best first day sales of a phone for Verizon?

Pretty much. I mean unless of course you can point out an Android phone that sold over a million handsets in a week. And the thing about it is thats considered to be low numbers for the iphone. I'd take the bet that at the end of the year the iphone will be the biggest seller in the US again. It's easy to gloat about selling more phones than IOS under the circumstances, but anyone that cant come to grips with the fact that what they did with one phone on one carrier was anything less than amazing is just fooling themselves.

The iPad has a clear advantage in the tablet market because it's a mature product. You're talking about a second gen product that was the only product on the market for a year competing with first gen products. Think of when the iPhone first came out. It scared the spit out of RIM and Nokia and MS and any number of other manufacturers and seemed poised to take the #1 spot in the smart phone market for good. Then Android came along. Let's be honest, if you throw Cupcake up against iOS it was wanting in a lot of ways. Two to three years and several innovations later, the Android phones running Froyo or even Eclair are 100% competitive with any iPhone out there and many of them are better in a lot of ways and now Android is the leader in the smart phone market.

Honeycomb is a new OS. People aren't sure of it. It's not completely as user friendly as iOS. It's not as polished as iOS. None of this is really surprising. It's a first gen tablet OS. Give it 6 mos to a year. Give it two years. Then see what's going on.

That's your facebook. On mine, lot's of people are talking about the upcoming Ubuntu release.

Does that mean Ubuntu is the most popular, Windows-Killing OS?

Does any single OEM sell more computers than Apple? I'm pretty sure not, however, any sane person realizes Microsoft won the PC war.

A better comparison is how many people bough a phone with comparable specs, not one model over another.

Apple has ONE phone out. Android runs on MANY devices, which means people can buy the phone/device that suits them, not what suits the OEM.

I dont see why people make such a big hype over Android outselling the iphone anyways. With 30 Android phones on the market compared to ONE iphone.. SHOULDNT it be outselling it? The iPhone is a mature product. The real story is that Android has out-paced iOS in growth. I'm sure the first tablet from Android wont outsell a second-generation tablet. However, come the second and third generations, we'll see.

Do you know how many Android tablets have already sold? Even before Android was ready for tablets?

I think in the end Android will endup beating iPad in entry price point which is the biggest thing in this market.

Like smartphones where you can get an android phone for free with a contract or as low as $129 for an Optimus V. You are looking at $50 for an iphone with a two year contract or $200-$300 outright.

I think the same will hold true as time goes on with Android tablets. Intially the entry level price point will be about the same, but as more manufactures jump in the the amount of features will go up on the premium units and the price will go down on the base units where the Android will win.

I don't get it... why does one have to be better than the other? Why do we feel compelled to defend our favorite mobile OS/device?

iOS and its devices are great products. Android and its devices are great products as well. And the reason they are both good, is because of each other. They both add features, stability, and competitive prices because of each other.

So Android fans, you should be happy about the iPad 2 and the fact that it's cheap! Cheaper than the Xoom at least. Guess what Motorola will now have to do, as well as Samsung and the Galaxy... drop prices!

The same with Apple fans! If the Android wasn't around to keep Apple on their toes, do you really think we'd even be talking about the iPhone 4, iOS 4, or even the iPad?

I don't get these arguments... why one has to be better than the other. Pick your favorite, and root for the other at the same time. As long as the other keeps spitting out upgrades and dropping prices, your favorite will do the same!

I think we tend to cheer for and defend Android because we like it more than iOS and we want it to be popular for longterm use. I think everyone likes the fact that there are options for which OS you use because , as you and I both point out, competition is good for our wallets. It also tends to push developement of new software and technology, which of course we all like.

I think the we all agree on that and that is a simple, basic understanding. However, to go to the level that you suggest is sort of like a Vikings fan cheering for a Packers fan. :D

In the end I want the NFL to succeed because I like football but will never cheer for the Packers. I want smartdevices to succeed but will never cheer for iOS. ;)
