Hi, I am hoping you can help but my hubbys HTC Hero wont get past the hero screen at the start.

He thinks this morning while he was half alseep turning off the alarms that he said yes to an update, the phone then turned off (he thinks due to battery power)

since then it wont turn on - i did some google research and got into the boot menu type thing which gives me the following:

HERO CVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT- 1.76.0007 (HERO10000)
MICROP-010f
TOUCH PANEL-SYN0104
RADIO-6.35.15.11
Aug 4 2009, 19:43:30

FASTBOOT

<VOL DOWN> HBoot Mode
<MENU> Reset Device

- going to HBoot leads to the following error messages:

SD checking...
Loading...[HERODIAG.zip]
No Image!
Loading...[HERODIA3.nbh]
No Image!
Loading...[HERODIA2.nbh]
No Image!
Loading...[HERODIAG.nbh]
No Image!
Loading...[HEROIMG.zip]
No Image!
Loading...[HEROIMG.nbh]
No Image!

going to the SIMLOCK option gives this message:

FAT32 Init OK
Open File Fail
Reboot device?
<Menu> Reset Device

using reset on ANY option just makes the phone go to the hero screen on start up again with one vibrate and then nothing the word HERO is just stuck there.

Any help would be AMAZING thank you

Sharon

Hi Sharon,

- going to HBoot leads to the following error messages:

Nothing to worry about there... it's looking for update files that obviously aren't there 'cos you're not updating. :)

using reset on ANY option just makes the phone go to the hero screen on start up again with one vibrate and then nothing the word HERO is just stuck there.
Tbh it sounds as if the aborted update has corrupted things. The best bet is probably to reinstall the firmware via the ROM Upgrade Utility (RUU) from HTC. Is the handset branded to a carrier i.e. Orange, 3UK, T-Mobile?

I did download the ROM update from HTC but it wouldnt registre that the phone was attached via the USB - or is that something different?

No, you're quite right.... I should have remembered that if the handset won't boot into the OS you can't use the RUU. It can be done from the HBoot though. ;)

If you run the ROM update .EXE file again and accept the EULA it will unpack the files into a folder in your %USER%/%TEMP% path and ask you to confirm a few actions prior to updating. Don't do anything, but find that folder and copy the ROM.ZIP file you'll find within it to a safe location elsewhere on your PC. Then cancel the update program and the temp files will be deleted.

Once you've got the ROM.ZIP file we'll talk you through actually using it to update the handset.

I dont mean to sound thick but i dont really understand that

Not a problem - I forget sometimes that not everyone has (mis)spent as much time tinkering with their handsets as myself. It's actually a lot simpler than I made it sound.

  • Run the ROM upgrade program again, and once at the first main screen stop!
  • Select Start>Run and type %temp% (or type it into Start>Search if using Win7)
  • Find the newest folder in the resulting window and inside that will be a file called rom.zip. Copy this to your desktop and rename it pc10img.zip.
  • You can now cancel the ROM upgrade program as it's no longer needed.
  • Copy the pc10img.zip to your SD card, insert the card in the handset and start in HBOOT (turn it on whilst holding volume down). It will find the file and start the update. Just follow the instructions...

You're sure you looked in the newest folder? I've just followed this procedure with an RUU I have here and the file is in a folder within the newest one found in %temp%. There are files named corecomp.ini, dotnetinstaller.exe and ISBEW64.exe plus a cryptically-named folder which contains all the update files. The rom.zip file is amongst these.

What is the file name of the ROM upgrade program you are using, btw?

Rats! My brain is starting to hurt so I've called for backup to hopefully confirm my thinking.... or tell me I'm talking rubbish and correct matters! The one thing I don't want to do is make things worse.

Hang fire for now - I'm sure a joint effort from the best brains in the Hero forum (plus myself) will sort this out before too long.

Hi, I had this problem today. I managed to solve it.

I don't know if it will work for you, but you can try!

I was getting the exact same symptoms and messages.I booted into the boot menu ( hold menu and volume down then turn on on my phone)

I selected fastboot then plugged the usb cable in. It then reads "fastbootusb" It wouldn't work if I fired up with the cable in, only if I plugged in at that point.

I was then able to run the RUU. If you don't have HTCsync on your PC, it won't work, so make sure you do.

It took two attempts before it worked.

Now I have a reset phone, which is a pain, but at least it works!

It's alive!!
Thanks, I had exactly the same problem. But this worked (renaming it to heroimg.zip also helped ;-)
Still, unbelievable that an HTC update can cause these problems. How many people are throwing it in the garbage right now? Oh well... I might still do that cause now I'm going to update to the new ROM again and will also get that latest update again :)

Hi sorry for the delay I been trying to do this all weekend

I can get the HUU to run and it gives me an ooption to update the rom and I click next, then the screen goes (although the program in is the tast bar still) but it never comes back, and clicking on it doesnt help as nothing comes up (even after hours).
If I take the USB out it lets me click update again and then says no usb.

I also renamed the rom.zip file but it says no or wrong image

anyone help me, we really cant afford a new phone :-(

Hi sjadja,
I had exactly the same symptoms as you, and I've been searching for a solution for the last few days. Finally, using Slug's instructions above, I got it working again. (I think I love slug... the first time I found some instruction that I understood enough to follow!) Because of Xyro's comment about renaming the file differently, I just did both, and put both on my SD card. I'm not even sure which one worked but frankly I don't care... one of them did!
I used the exe file that you described, so hopefully you'll get it to work too. Fingers crossed. Thanks Slug!

Hi guys im also having the same problem with my htc hero.

I've used the instructions above, everything was working fine but i get a 'CID incorrect' image.

I was thinking if i could find the correct firmware version to match what my phone had before it could work. But i cant access the phone to check.

Any ideas.

thanks
