Root Axis users be careful!!!

I know this is the Ally section, but this information might help some users who have the idea that the Axis and Ally are identical phones. I posted this as a reply to a post on another thread where someone was looking for 2.2 and custom ROMs for the Axis, but I thought I might as well post it here also.....

For those of you who think the Ally (VS740) and Axis (AS740) are the "same" phones........ please read!!


Axis may be a "knock off" of the Ally, but the techniques for the Ally DO NOT work correctly for the Axis. I learned this the hard way. Attempted Trident's method to update to 2.2 and then to Velocity. BAD IDEA!!!! This not only bricked my phone, but it SUPERBRICKED my phone. The update worked to about 70% and then................

Nothing. Phone won't even turn on now. Tried several methods to get it to turn on, but the file system is officially FRIED. So, don't just assume that because one phone is a "knock off" of another that the same programs will work for both.

As far as rooting, I rooted the Axis VERY easily with Z4Root. Absolutely no problems, very easy, quick way to root and unroot. I also used the LONG method to root and it worked fine as well.

DON'T TRY TO USE THE ALLY METHOD OF UPDATING TO 2.2 ON AN AXIS!!!! YOU WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE IF YOU KEEP TRYING.

It needs no verification, Flashing any devices ROM or Computers BIOS with one not intended to be used isn't a good Idea. Hopefully as it won't even turn on, it's still under warranty and you can get it replaced by just telling them it quit working and playing dumb..

There are devices whose systems are created similar enough that one can use software updates, new BIOS versions and other software originally meant for one on the other. I use BIOS flashing on PCs from the same manufacturer to update to newer versions quite often. Like any other type of programming, I do run into problems now and then. But with the right research and knowledge, these things can be done.

That being said, I am in NO WAY an expert on all things Android (or Linux for that matter). I have the Axis, along with other Android phones, to learn on. The whole point of having several phones to play with, along with developer software, is to become more knowledgeable. My original post was meant to be a warning to people who do not have phones to play around with, but who think that just because some sites on the internet call the Axis a "knock off" of the Ally they can do anything to it that can be done to the Ally. Just trying to prevent someone from ruining a phone that they need.

This phone was under warranty and they have already replaced it with another Axis. I am now working on some changes to the Ally 2.2 flash procedure, using SDK and Eclipse, that will hopefully work on the Axis. Wonderful thing about SDK is the ability to create a VIRTUAL phone to test things on first.

Based on the similarities and the symptoms of your failure I will venture a guess that it is the radio.img that is not comparable. This being said 2.2.1 will not work with a 2.1 radio, so flashing all but the radio won't work.

Thanks for the info..... like I said, I am new to the Android modification process as well as not being as knowledgeable on Linux as I would like to be. But, again, the whole point of having phones to play with is to learn! And I'm having fun.

I appreciate all the info you guys have posted here. I have definitely learned a lot reading these threads.
