Help Sync with Outlook

I would like to sync with my Outlook. When I delete a: calendar, email, contact on my phone (or on the computer), I would like the same action to occur on the other device.

It seems this is impossible. Am I correct?

Email should be doable, not sure about contact or calendar.

Read up on Exchange support and the app called "Touchdown" -- that might get you started at least

Deleting email works, though it take a little while. Don't know about contact or calendar with the Combined Inbox Email app.

I am actually able to sync the contact and calender functions using Go Contact Sync and Google Calendar sync, respectively. The problem is the email. I don't use exchange for imap. I dont have an IT department or corporate anything. I just want to not have to delete my email in: combined inbox, each inbox individually, and on my computer at home. That's what I can't do. I moved from my Palm Treo and was going to get the Storm 2, but this Droid seemed like the ticket. Then... it doesn't really sync with Outlook. Kind of a bummer since my old old Treo did so.

Then there must he something in the setup of your Outlook. When I delete an Outlook email from my phone, I deletes it from the phone, and the server. Though it does take a few minutes to actually delete from the server.

while Outlook is just a client, Outlook is synonymous with Exchange.

Is exchange for imap some other way of using exchange? And why not use it?

It doesn't sound like the OP is using an Exchange server for Outlook. I think he was doing USB desktop-type sync previously with Treo, and is looking for the same here, which isn't possible. If you want your email/contacts/calendar in Outlook to stay synced across devices, then you'll have to use an Exchange server if your company uses one, unless a third party app has been released that I don't know about.

As far as I can tell, this is how my email works:

An email hits either address, gmail or .com, and is forwarded to my Droid. Outlook also checks these same 2 areas every few minutes. The Droid has no way of knowing that I even use Outlook, therefore any deletion on my Droid has no effect on my Outlook, and vice versa.

Hi crankerchick. I used a program provided by Vereizon called Wireless Sync to sync Outlook with my Treo. I do want the same effect, but can't seem to get it. Not wired either.

I think a big weakness in the whole tech world is assuming that the majority of people have any company or IT support. I have nothing at all. Most people like me just give up.

If you delete an email in your .com inbox, then go to 1and1.com, login, and look at their mail viewer, is the email deleted there?

I also have a 1and1.com email, so I will test this.

Chris, you cannot do what you are trying to do with a pop account. You must use an imap account to do this.

Also, outlook is NOT synonymous with exchange. In fact, most outlook users are on pop accounts. The majority of small businesses and home accounts use either outlook or msmail. Most small business also do not have IT support in house either, so it is a pain if you don't know this stuff.

You can pay 1and1 an extra $10 a month for a hosted exchange account (imap) and sync your email.

I have a small company with 10 people, all set up on pop accounts. I have had a treo, winmo, bb and now droid. On none of them could i sync email, but everything else sync'd great. frustrated that i can't sync contacts, memos, todo and calendar easily either on droid. I am now syncing calendar with google calendar, haven't found a good solution for any of the others. "the missing sync" is working on this, they now have contacts, but don't have todos and memos yet.

I was just looking at 1and1.com's FAQ on setting up email, and it tells you to use IMAP. Why did you choose POP?

eclipsed4utoo: I used POP because I had never heard of any of these when I set up my email. Probably, it was the first box I could check.

If deleting in your outlook also deletes at the 1and1 level, then you are not using POP on your Outlook, but instead IMAP. Try looking at the settings in your Outlook for the IMAP configuration of the account and duplicate that on your phone, creating your mail account as IMAP instead of POP.

I don't want to delete it immediately, because I need to make sure my phone gets it. I used to have it delete immediately, prior to owning the Droid. I still don't think the Droid and OUtlook are aware of each other's existence.

the droid and outlook if using pop are NOT aware of each other. So you are saying that when you delete a message on your phone, it also deletes on your desktop computer in Outlook? Thanks for the tip on Gocontact sync

Ok, so the first statement is what lead me to believe you were using IMAP in Outlook, because you said deleting on the desktop deletes it when you look online at 1and1. The second statement is ACTUALLY what is happening, which is that Outlook is deleting the mail off the server after a day. The 2 aren't truly in sync, but just the message is getting deleted after a day.

Your outlook and Droid aren't aware of each other like you said, and there is no way for them to be aware of each other as long as you have them both set up as POP. You need IMAP to accomplish what you are trying to do.

So crankerchick, you are giving me hope. If I change my mail at 1and1 to imap, then the Droid and Outlook will know each other each other exist? 1and1 has an exchange option, but eclipsed4utoo says that the FAQ says I can use imap. Of course, as you can tell from reading all this, I really won't know what to do when I make the change. That has never stopped me yet.

Yes you have hope, you will want to set up 1and1 as IMAP and then reconfigure your Outlook and Android email accounts to IMAP. Then everybody will play nicely together and it will be a true sync.

If you can do exchange on 1and1, that would be preferable over IMAP I believe, because then you will have "push" notification. The difference is with push, as soon as a new message is received at 1and1, it will send the notification to your phone and your desktop Outlook (any client listening on the exchange server basically).

With IMAP, everything will be in sync as you like, but the difference is your Outlook and your Droid will have to go and "check for new mail" at some interval you specify, versus being notified of when new mail arrives. So, you will have to trade how frequently the Droid checks for mail with battery life. With push, it is "instant" without your phone constantly having to "check for new mail." This is at least how I understand it to work.

Setting up IMAP or exchange is no harder than setting up POP, you just need the right server addresses.

That sounds encouraging. The checking at intervals would be fine with me as that's how I have always done it. I'm going to go onto 1and1 and try to set it up right now. I'll let you know if it works.

Well, I set up my imap email and deleted my pop email, on both 1and1 and my Droid. My fingers are crossed. Any suggestions for my gmail account?

Gmail already support IMAP as well. Your Droid is already set up to sync, just change your gmail account in Outlook to IMAP as well. Directions are definitely on google somewhere.

they don't need to be. they are both connecting to the same server. if the email is on the server, then the email is on the droid and in outlook. if the email is not on the server, it shouldn't show up on the droid or in outlook. Outlook and the DROID do not need to be aware of each other.
