i know this has been coverd b4 but iam at a loss now...i have 8 meg left ...every app and game is on sdcard that works from there ..some dont like smooth calender widget etc but even though they instlled on sdc they still take a lil chunk of memory ...ive got cache cleaners,history cleaners apps to sd etc.....where is it all gone???

iam not rooted

is there a app that can show a file tree of internl memory so i can find what and where the storage is being used?? are there any hidden temp folders i can empty etc

Apps2Sd will give you the information you need, provided you have 2.2 (Froyo).

I also have space problems (who doesn't!). I have just started to archive apps I don't need at the moment using SystemPanel. Once archived, you can then delete them from your phone until you need them.

apps 2 sd doesnt show a file tree it just shows what cna be moved and not.... i want to see what is taking space and where. in windows there is an app called "windirstat" which shows the whole drive and file structure list biggest 1st so then u can see where all the crap is being stored

any ideas?

It can be a lot of work, but it is the ultimate fix for all memory issues.

+1, after SUroots help, i'm now rooted with 725mb of free memory with over 100 apps installed.

will rooting alone allow apps to be installed to the SD card? Or is a custom Rom needed?

The easiest way is to install a custom ROM. But once you are rooted that isn't terribly difficult.

You do also need to prepare an extra partition on your SD card for this. The FAQs in SUroot's sig explain what is needed.

Edit: OK, being rooted does make it easy to force apps to SD Froyo-style where the developer hasn't supported it, but that's still a less complete way of moving apps than the one in the app2sd+ FAQ - it's OK as a stop-gap, but sooner or later you have the same problem.

As for an app that shows in a tree fashion how much space each app takes up, search "DiskUsage" in the market. Its a really easy to use app that will tell you exactly what you want to know I believe.

It does have a good breakdown but I am dubious of its accuracy. I found some anomalies when using it in some of the reported sizes of things.

I wholeheartedly agree! There needs to be an app that can easily break down what is where. The default 2.2 menu can be deceiving as are many of the apps such as App 2 SD if you don't realize that a stock device cannot move the entire app to the card. How do you know what % of the storage is left in the internal memory? Good question which I unfortunately do not have an answer to. Here is some example data off my phone. Granted there are several people that question the accuracy of DiskUsage but it has served me well over the past few months and worst case scenario it gives you a picture of what is out there.
1) Apps Used - App 2 SD (same info as internal app info but easier to see at a glance)
2) App - DiskUsage (SD directory apps2sd
3) App - Android System Info
4) Windows Explorer in USB mode to check SD app dump. Mainly in directory .android_secure but other places as well

2 Total Apps Checked
1) Dolphin HD
App 2 SD (& stock) - Confirmed on SD
Total = 4.9MB, Application = 1.31MB, Data = 3.59MB, Cache = 0B
Android System Info - Confirmed on SD
Total = 4.9MB, Application = 1.31MB, Data = 3.59MB, Cache = 0B
Disk Usage
4.9MB Internal Storage, 2.09MB SD Storage

Tested uninstalling Dolphin since it seemed to be the biggest hog and pulling free memory info from stock 2.2 screen.

Quickly glancing at data reported by the stock 2.2 application it appears as though I have 12 apps that are more than 2GB in internal memory digging a bit deeper I actually have 17 apps that surpass 2GB of internal memory usage.

I know this has been a large post but there has to be some tool out there that allows you to easily see:
This is how much storage the app uses, this is how much is allocated internally and this is how much is allocated to the SD card.

I gave up a few weeks ago. I use a couple of apps to keep an eye on things, Memory Status and App 2 SD Free.
Generally my status bar chimes up first and the first thing I do is goto App 2 SD and clear the cache. This can sometimes free up 2-3MB of space.
The next thing that I do is un install and re install the following:
Maps
Facebook
Handscent
Gmail
SlideIT Keyboard
Youtube

This frees up shed loads. I have no idea what is taking up the memory as all I have to do is re sign in and all my settings are fine.

Don't delete Folder Organiser though as that really does go back to zero as I found out. Took me about 5 hrs to get my phone right again!!

I find that if I do this once a month and also exercise good housekeeping i.e being honest with myself and deleting the stuff I don't actually use anymore as all my friends are sick of seeing them lol I tend to hover around 30 MB internal memory spare.

One thing that I cannot install athough it doesn't seem to have affected my phone at all is Flash Player 10.1.
The market says it's only a 4 MB file but my phone loses about 10MB.
Been a mystery for a few months now. Like I say, the web experience doesn't seem to be affected so I'm not too fussed.

Im with you on that one dan, DiskUsage for me seemed a lil hit an miss it definately kept reporting my flash size as wrong...one minute it was the market's 'supposed' size of 4mb then on restart of app it was 12mb then 4mb again...same with some games...

and those were AFTER I had cache cleaned things...

So just to be sure, uninstalling and reinstalling Handcent for example I won't lose my settings eg. colored LED flash for different contacts and fonts used etc. but doing this will free up some space?

Yes, what exactly does the Flash app do because I've unsinstalled it too and not noticed any difference when browsing the web or watching multi-media files......*scratches head*

I was desperate for this and other Android phones to be iPhone slayers but they're not. This time next year (if I'm still working) I'm jumping to Apple as love em or loathe em, they just work.

I spent over a month on this forum and others before buying my Desire.
