Help Can I turn the Desire into a wireless adapter?

I was wondering if I can use the Desire as a wireless adapter for a PC. I mean to connect it through USB so the PC will detect it as a wireless adapter, just like a USB wifi adapter. I'm not talking about tethering and sharing the 3G internet with the PC.

Well, I would like to know if it's possible on any Android device in general, or at least to know if it's just impossible with Android OS.

Thanks.

That's very useful, thanks for the tip :)

However, this isn't what I meant. I'm only using the phone as a gateway in this manner. I want to be able to use it as an adapter. Like for example: to have the ability to scan wireless networks on my PC, not on the phone.

But your tip is a lifesaver nonetheless. I have a laptop with a dead wireless card. This is really helpful.

Download the android SDK

http://dl.google.com/android/android-sdk_r06-windows.zip

Extract the zip to the root of your C: drive

On the PC go:

  • Start > Run > type "cmd" and press [ok]
  • In the black window type "cd\" and press enter
  • Type "cd\android-sdk-windows\tools" and press enter
  • Type "./adb shell netcfg usb0 dhcp" and press enter

My adb is now located in platform-tools so try
cd android-sdk-windows\platform-tools (press enter)
adb shell netcfg usb0 dhcp (press enter)

Yep, although the link I provided is R6 where it is in tools.

And also, quick trawl on google, as you said

"adb shell netcfg usb0 dhcp" should work.

Not sure if it needs the "./" for bash scripts.

then plz tell me who has made this guide
or tell him to make a video

Dude, chill out. If you want people to help you, be polite. First, you highjacked this thread which was about an unrelated topic. Not cool. Now this.

1) What you are trying to do isn't common and isn't that easy. If it was, you wouldn't need to ask for help.

2) Don't demand things. People on this board are nice enough to try to help you, so be gracious and thankful for their help.

LOTS of things are the xda forums are way way way above my head. They are true computer gurus. They also aren't paid to do any of these things, and they aren't going to like it if you go there demanding that they make it easy for you or make a video just so you can figure it out.

You need to 1) make an effort, and 2) ask questions politely.

There isn't a "guide" for everything in life, and not everything is "free" either.

Well said.

As explained, it is not being a "wireless adaptor" that you are looking for. "Wireless adaptor" is Wifi tethering, where you connect your laptop to the phone using wifi. Since your laptop has no wifi, no this will not be possible.

Now, I have already provided you a solution for Reverse USB tethering. It is the only solution which yes, is complicated... so what else is it you are looking to do now?

If you wanted to buy a cheap wireless adaptor for your PC you could do this~:

I'm pretty sure this is related, Though the way the main asker asked it was a little... confusing. I have the samsung Epic Android, and what i want to do, is conect to my home wifi with my phone, and then tether my phone to my computer with the cable, and connect to the internet through the phone on my computer. It doesn't seem to want to work, and I'm not sure if there's something, like an app that i need to install first. It doesn't seem to be working so Idk. I'm running Windows XP (Like a boss). And Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Ok I found the drivers. Now i feel like a blind idiot. My bad sorry for you're time. No need to reply to this. >.>

So now it connects, but it doesn't want to use it or view it as an adapter, i have it "Tethered" On the phone, and it makes the "Ding" when i connect it, but my computer will not connect to the internet through it. Any help would be amazing. And if i should make a new thread, let me know. I just found this one through google so i thought it'd be a good place to start.

turning your phone into a wifi adapter is easy!! and what i mean is that if you have lets say cable internet and have a wireless modem but you dont have a wifi adapter to connect your computer to get wifi. so follow these easy steps to get your computer internet from your modem to your computer using an android phone.

1. download Easytether pro from the android marketplace
2. run through the set up and it will give you an option to download the software you need on your computer to your phone.
3. plug in your android phone and turn on usb transfer then copy the downloaded software to your computer and install it.
4. ok now set up your android phone to connect to your wi-fi.
5. open easyteher pro again and enable usb tether.
6. plug your phone to computer via USB.
7. now that the software is installed go to the bottom right of your toolbar find the little icon that looks like a phone with a straight line next to it(sorry i cant give the exact description) right click on it and press connect.

at that point you should be tethering your home wifi via your android phone!!!

trust me this works cause i did this and tested it out!!
