NETFLIX.jpg

Just found it.
I doubt it works.
I have not heard of one person using it successfully yet.

Here it is so others smarter than me can try and play with it.
Netflix.apk

Death2All110, GetItNowMarketing, Trident, And Savoxis. Have fun. I know you guys like a challenge. LOL

It doesnt work because netflix hasnt activated the severs for it. They are using netflix as a release application for newer phones. Until one of those phones comes out, no streaming!

Well when they do turn it on... wonder if it will work.
Our luck Probably not. LOL Oh well.....

heres Hoping. :D

Also thanks for the info Grz.
Any idea when they will turn it on?
Do you have a link by chance?

**EDIT**Does anyone know the official release date?
One good thing is that it loads my que perfect. You can also search the movies.
It tries to load the movie for streaming but as Grz pointed out they havent turned the server on yet.
I am actually excited that this may actually work when the time comes.
If it does this phone may actually be worth keeping past the upgrade date. FINGERS CROSSED**

This is great that this app works on the Ally so far, me question is this though. When the streaming is available, will it work on this phone without flash?
Well I believe it is a completely different system than flash. The only reason flash doesnt work for us is because they didnt build it for our processors archetechure.
Netflix uses Silverlight. It deffinately tries to start Streaming and then cuts off. This is what happens to everyone that loads it. Even on the Nexus S. So thus far we are on par with everyone else who has tried it.

This is most likely due to the information that Grz posted above.

Well yes I am deffinately waiting with baited breath.
Keep hope alive brother. :D

Also if anyone has info on this please weigh in and if possible post some links for all to see.

Thanks everyone.

Well dont get your hopes up boys.
It seems that Netflix has a deal locked up with Qualcomm Processors.
Netflix says "They are the only processor secure enough for their media"

Yeah well I say that is complete Garbage. I think Qualcomm just struck a deal that is going to sell millions of their phones and they most likely paid Netflix BIG!!

Well all that last part is my conjecture but it seems reasonable given the information at hand.

I still hope but yet the hope is greatly diminished.
However if it doesent work... Who knows maybe Our incredible Devs can cook somthing up.
Well see.

P.S. anyone know what processor the HTC thunderbolt has?
How does this new LG in which the netflix app was ripped from compare to the Thunderbolt?

Does this new LG have a slide out keyboard by chance? :D

The processor being "supported" by Netflix for the DRM isn't in any phones yet, not even the TB :(

It's possible Devs can cook the DRM libraries out of the hardware, but I'm not leaving much hope.

Netflix requires Flash 10.2 so gg
Not that I dont believe that... but where did you get that from?
I thought they used Microsoft silverlight.

**EDIT**
Netflix does NOT use Flash. As I thought Netflix does use Silverlight.

http://blogs.adobe.com/jd/2008/12/netflix_flash_silverlight_supp.html

So the only thing that will stop us most likely is our processor not being supported, along with pretty much every other Android device in existance.

Also the Thunderbolt does have the proper Qualcomm Processor
However I usually go for LG. I guess now it boils down to which ever one is easier to root.**

**update**
As you will see down below It says that my device is Obsolete.
This thing may be done before it ever gets off the ground.
Maybe we just need a way to trick it into thinking we have the right processor. Idunno

Netflix, Flash, Silverlight, support jd/adobe

Yes netflix uses Silverlight on PC, but that may be different on a mobile device. What does the iphone use for streaming netflix? I know they have a working netflix application and they definitely don't have flash.

As for doing any sort of trickery, come on. If that were possible don't you think someone would have tried that with flash? We will not be able to use this application.

The menus use flash - apparently they are animated out like crazy.

Here are two pics of the very functional menu of the Netflix App from my Ally.

Everything is just as functional as the regular Netflix site... except the all important Actual Streaming of the show.
Hope that clears it up a bit.

They have stream lined this app very nicely. I honestly cant wait to have a phone that will run it.

Heres still a small glimmer of hope that our Ally can. I really Doubt it though with the research that I have done today.

But to recap.... No Flash needed.

Will requare the DRM to run it, if we can get that, then maybe

One would think that they would build the DRM mechanism right into the application, since you will need to provide your account credentials to gain access to content.

If YouTube has created an app (that does not require devices to support flash) to access normally flash based streamed content, there shouldn't be any reason to believe that NetFlix couldn't do the same with their normally Silverlight based streamed content. The fact that they already do stream content to Blu-ray players, game consoles, etc. should be enough evidence that Flash / Silverlight support will not be necessary.

It sounds like all devices are producing the same results at the moment. I think we should honestly just wait it out until NetFlix activates their streaming content on Android and try it out. Without a way to tell that the app is working on some devices and not on others, we are all just making assumptions.

Agreed....
However in the mean time here is someones Logcats over on XDA.
Netflix.apk from LG Revolution system dump - xda-developers

Its at very least an interesting read for our Devs.

But yes it would be nice to have it working on at least one device somewhere so we could get some answers as you aptly pointed out.

Good comments!! :D

Help us GetItnowMarkenobi, your'e our only hope!!!! :D

**Update**
Someone just tried it on the Thunderbolt which has the same Processor as the LG revolution... No dice.
I guess servers will be off until the Revolution release. :(

You can read about it here:

They opened it for demo and closed it again. They probably didnt have everything fully set up at the time of the demo. So they could have shut it off to get everything ready and wait until the launch of the revolution.
I know we talked about this some yesterday..... but what do you think the odds are of us getting Netflix going on other than the specified devices?

I know these DRM libraries seem to be the key. You think we could somehow mimic the DRM libraries in some kind of hacked version for the mass of people with "unsupported Android devices?" Might you be

DEATH 2 ALL KENOBI???

You would be Worshipped by the Android communities World wide..... and I would give you a back scratch..... or a massage... or I would do your homework.....Maybe take out your Garbage?....

I mean really, a deal like that.... you cant pass that up Bubba. :p

As depressing as it would be to not have NetFlix streaming to my Ally, I do have USB tether / Wifi hotspot, so I can always watch through my tethered laptop, which does have a much higher resolution display. This is definately not enough reason for me to give up my Ally with USB/Wifi tethering for the LG Revo which will likely be quite sometime before it is released / rooted / USB / WiFi tether apps redeveloped for rooted user.

(Not to mention another whole year before I can get a new phone at reduced 2 yr. contract price.)

Oh no I agree with ya brother. I just think it would be awesome if we could get Netflix going.

Thats one of the only 2 things that dissapoint me by this phone. That and Flash.
No big deal I can be content till that day comes.

Thanks for the input.
