Help need help w/ music

Am new to the world of mp3's, etc. ... have never owned an iPod or similar device. Would like to transfer some of my music library (CDs) to my phone but not sure what tools (apps) I need nor exactly how to go about it.

I've heard about apps like iTunes, doubleTwist, etc. but don't really understand what they do. I'm not planning on buying music (Apple store, etc.) and doubt I'd be interested in many of the more esoteric features (categorizing my tunes, etc.) ... I just need to have several hours of music for an upcoming trip.

Based on my initial research I need to "rip" my CDs, then transfer those files to my phone. Am on Windows XP. Do I use software like iTunes (or doubleTwist) to "rip" the CDs? And if iTunes doesn't handle the "ripping" why is it needed?

Are there better choices than iTunes, etc.? I mentioned it because its one of only a couple I've heard of. I'd appreciate any guidance or software recommendations on this. Thanks.

You can technically rip CDs using the stock Windows Media Player, but I would probably suggest something better to take care of that. Not to mention, by default, Windows Media Player rips to .wma files, but I do think it has an option to switch to .mp3 files as well.

I would suggest using something like Winamp to rip your CDs and here is a guide on how to do it: How Do I Rip Music From CD Using Winamp? | eHow.com . I am sure others will have input on their favorite CD ripping software as well. Feel free to use whatever one you find to be the easiest and most useful to your needs.

OK, so I can use XP's Mediaplayer to "rip" my CDs ... is that all the software I'll need?

You recommended Winamp over XP's Mediaplayer ... why?

If you want to use Windows Media Player, then go ahead. There is nothing wrong with it.

I recommended Winamp because it is a popular alternative and it may be a bit easier to use. It also has a great selection of plug-ins available to use with it.

WinAmp hands down!

I've ripped hundred's of my cd collection and it is certainly the way to go for me.
I like that it rips, can automatically update the file info and find the album art for the files too. It will automatically deposit the ripped files into a folder for you, etc., check out the site and see for yourself. It also used to have a side program called winamp remote that let you access your HOME stored collection over the internet from other devices and pc's. An awesome feature but I don't use it anymore nor am I sure it is still available.

I would recommend not using the Windows Media option as it has limits... just my humble $.02.
