i wouldn't get too excited for an official gingerbread release for our phone. best we're going to be able to hope for is that the xda devs can cook up some functional roms using official firmware for other phones.

Guys.. I really don't want to try to back samsung just to be made into a fool here.

However, Am I the only who feels that if samsung wants to redeem itself, there is no better way to do it than deliver 2.3 soon?

Sure they may not but, lets be real... As mad as everyone claims to be and all that crap... Your locked into a contract for 2 years. If samsung gets on the ball and delivers updates, this means there are still a lot of people who A. have a captivate because they can't afford to change who will be happy. B. a lot of people buying second hand captivates who may gain some respect for samsung.

I am not saying they are but, I don't think it is stupid to be a little hopeful.

If samsung realizes it screwed up, they do have time to change, and a lot of good can still come from this whole situation.

People love to be pessimistic and dramatic because, it gets more attention but, the truth is if samsung starts delivering solid updates, and gives the captivate a fair 2 year cycle, they will earn a ALOT of dedicated customers.

I mean, Samsung trying to legit restore its image could be an amazing thing for all of us.

I'm really not sure I share that same mentality. I won't wait for Samsung for anything. Gingerbread is already here, and while not ALL of the bugs are out, it's still very usable for day to day use.

If left to Samsung, no one would have working GPS and we'd all have to tolerate the bloatware.

Look, I am not trying to be a nay sayer.

But, I highly advice against rooting the phone in that manner.

I am a big fan of rooting and installing custom roms, with a good bit of caution its safer than most people think it is.

With that said, I would HIGHLY advice against CM7 at the moment if your not REALLY comfortable with it and know what your doing.

CM7 doesn't support Rom Manager, It is a bit different in terms of requirements and what you can safely expect.

Although, knowing it has the differences it has, it really makes me wish people would have complained for gingerbread instead of froyo.

The Cyanogen Mod team is comprised of many developers, so I think it's their way of saying "don't bug us, we'll get to it!".

I have run this ROM and I will say, after having 2.3, 2.2 isn't quite as cool - Really the only bug for me was the Camera - Sometimes it would take a LONG time to load.

Other than that, everything else I tried worked.

There is a "bug list"... sort of.
KNOWN BUGS

• FF-Camera
• Polling problem on RIL (works after lock and unlock)
• 2G/3G toggle (works if no data connection is active)
• Compass (works not at 100%)
• USB sharing of external SD-Card
• commands: reboot recovery, reboot download (maybe not possible to implement)
• FM-Radio
• TV-Out

Like I said, I really enjoyed it and will probably go back... soon. As I said before, there is NO risk of hard bricking here as the sbl.bin file isn't touched. If you're thinking of flashing, all of the files for the Cappy can be found here:

Watch the video like 5x, then make sure you have all the files mentioned, and begin - it really doesn't take too long and once you've got it installed, you'll wonder why you were ever worried!

What is RIL?

And as far as 2g/3g toggle do they mean a toggle available to the user? or do they mean the build in ability to switch from different connections?

Also FF-Camera?

Thanks Dude! I am done on waiting on anything from Samsung..I am still running Eclair, I saw so many complaints on FroYo 2.2 bugs that I steered clear of it. I am seriously thinking about rooting, this will be my first time doing this....is it pretty simple to do?

All you have to do is download Android Side loading machine.

Get the apk for one click root.

Install one click root.

Click the button...

Done.

Rooting is not even required to flash CM7 - I will say this tho - You'll want to learn to flash on the custom 2.2 ROMs first - If you're not familiar with the inner workings of the phone yet I'd start there before going to CM7.

coming from a first time android user myself. my cappy ive had no issues with, GPS,Auto shutoff, ect... yes i have the newest build so i think all the bugs have been worked out of it. i updated to froyo(2.2) without a hitch. it did take about 35 mins to do, but thats cause i did it on my work computer with a slow connection. with all that being said, being new to all this, i would welcome a 2.3 release from samsung. still kinda leary to doing the root and install of a custom rom, not that i wouldnt want to try, as i am a so called techy somewhat..lol i have learned alot from this site and the people on it. ive heard both sides of the topic of to root or not to root. and agree with both sides. not to be one not willing to try a rooting of a custom rom, i just dont want to brick my new toy so soon into my 2 year contract. so yes i would love to give Samsung the benafit of the doubt and let them put out a 2.3 release. just for us newbies to the android world.

please dont get down on my being new to all this. as i cant get enough infor from all you guys here. you all have made things easier for me to do what i have done ot my cappy.

Cyanogen Mod 7 is pretty awesome. I watched video once, then followed along second time (I already had clockworks so I got to skip a little).

I encounter occassional bug with big video file, youtube seems to lack the quality it had, and a few other random bugs seem to happen.. but, they are rare and usually don't happen on a regular basis. I think once my phone froze up for maybe 5 seconds then started working just fine again.

I think I'm sticking with CM7 until I see a good reason to change. Battery life seems better than what I was getting.

My battery life isn't as great as my girlfriends IP4 but, she doesn't have to use wifi.. I toggle on and off wifi/3g s required.. she can leave on 3g all day and still get better battery life.

The moment she turns on wifi we even out more or less.

With that said I've manage to use my phone for like 3 and half hours and still get 15 hours off the charger or so..

i think i need to check out a youtube video of how to ROOT, im wanting some of the other goodies i cant get non rooted. being rooted though i can still keep the stuff i have on the phone now right? i love the gingerbread look just kinda leary of doing the root myself..

I see that samsung released a software update from the Gingerbread v2.3.4 to v2.3.6. Is this a good upgrade or should I be looking to a custom build release that someone could recommend? My main concerns are can I reroot the phone after the upgrade and is this a stable secure release. Any suggestions will be appreciated. I also have seen the references to a rom, as far as I know this is a chip, however the references I have seen point to this is possibly the system software, like the OS like gingerbread. Am I on the right track here or what are you all talking about the rom. I also would like to get a heads up on android development. Is there a preferred STK? I would like to start to dissect the programs and system software to start learning what goes into an android program.
