Hide people in Facebook

People who put themselves on Facebook don't want to be hidden. (Or, they have very little knowledge of and a very short attention span for the constantly changing privacy options that require constant vigilance in order to keep all your data from being splooged across the internet.)

Out of curiosity, if you don't want to see those people on Facebook, why did you friend them in the first place?

Two reasons, perhaps both of them dumb ones.

1. I am in a band and so "fans" will "friend" me. I really don't care what they had for lunch but am happy to share my life with them so they can remember my music. We have a fan "page" but it isn't quite the same.

2. I have friends and family that I think would be offended if I didn't friend them, but I still am not that excited to see pictures of their dog every day. I enjoy being friends with them so I can click on their page every now and then and get caught up but don't need to see their feed.

I would love to only have 100 friends and actually be interested in what everyone is posting but as it is, I have 1600 and the website feed works great because I have muted a bunch of people. Apps flood me with TMI.

There are people (e.g. old high school acquaintances), that I would like to have the option to stay in touch with (even if they change their email address), so it' nice to be Facebook friends with them. But some of those people incessantly post boring stuff on Facebook, letting you know every time the take a poo or go to store. And some of those people even automatically post their FourSquare check-ins so they end up making like 6 Facebook posts every day (like every time they go the grocery store, Starbucks, etc.) On the PC, I solve that problem by hiding them.

This is why I gave up facebook a long time ago. The few people I actually want to stay in touch with are too busy (or maybe have too much of a life?) and they never update their FB anyway. So, the best way for me to reach them is by dropping them an email once in a while.

The vast majority of people seem to fall into the category above. FB wastes too much time and too many braincells for the small amount of "usefulness" it offers to me.

Ninjakyle, ever think of having a separate FB page for the band itself so you can keep your personal one "clean"?
