Root Is Gingerbread worth it?

I put GSB on my Eris and while I think it's awesome that devs have been able to put the newest version of Android on our old phone, I'm not sure if I see much reason to keep it over a rom like xtrSense.

I think the customization of CyanogenMod is cool and there are some nice new features, but there seems to be a decent amount of lag plus I don't see much of a difference from 2.1.

Am I missing something? Is there really much reason to switch to Gingerbread or is it mostly hype?

Hopefully the final release of CM7 will be faster and improved...

as i have said in other threads,IMO its not really fair to compare gingerbread to froyo or eclair yet,as the roms are still in their infancy. compairing a rom in its development stages to any rom that is a polished stable release is not comparing apples to apples.

i think gingerbread is well worth it,and it will eventually be a smooth as the CM6 based roms currently available to us.

does something like CELB or nonsensikal fit your needs? if so then so will GB will be awsome for you when its fully developed.

do you miss sense and dont really feel an advantage from CM6 roms? nothing at all wrong with that- if elcair sense roms do everything you want them to stay with one of them :)

I've been running gingerbread for about a week now, and I love it. I initially had some problems with texting, but once I got that straightened out, it ran pretty much perfectly, and has been rock solid ever since. Even with all of my old stuff installed, this still feels like the fastest ROM I've put on my phone. No idea where your lag is coming from. I've heard that the slide style lockscreen can cause lag right away when opening the phone, but I've always used the rotary type, so I haven't had that problem.

I also say Gingerbread is worth it. My phone is incredibly fast, faster than any FroYo ROM I've used. Plus, with Gingerbread, you can run the cache2cache script to get more space on your phone. I say to try and give it some time, a lot of the initial lag might be restoring applications getting the phone settled down and everything. The only lag I experience after a good few hours of it on my phone is the window pop ups, and even then those are getting much smoother with each release of GSB. I've never used xtr ROMs but I know they are good so I can't say I can compare it though.

Just give it a shot, though, I'm sure you'll come around to it =]

For me, yes, the Froyo and GB ROMs are worth it. One of the things that I do most with my phone is Gmail, and the gmail client for Eclair is lacking, IMHO. I also am not a huge fan of Sense, and I greatly dislike the "feature" of the HTC based ROMs that remind you of calendar appointments every 5 minutes if you do not dismiss them - something I simply will not do when I am driving a car to an appointment. As I have said before, all apps and use being equal, I get much better battery life from the Froyo and GB ROMs than I get from Eclair based ROMS.

But use what you like best. There are some things that I really like about the HTC based ROMs - they are stable with this hardware, and everything works, from programming your phone to Navigation (yes, I know that there is a fix for this now in Froyo/GB) to the camera (which is still very mediocre, but works best in the HTC based ROMs.) For me, the benefit/cost ratio leans more toward Froyo and GB than Eclair. For others, it may be very different.

Thanks for your inputs! All good opinions.

I think I'm gonna stick with GSB for a little longer and try to get used to it cause there are some features I like, plus I like trying the newest ROM. I probably just need to adjust after using Sense for so long. Plus hopefully it'll run even smoother with the updates and once it becomes stable.

Just wondering, what tweaks have you guys made? Anything substantial? I did the cache2cache plus enabled JIT. Anything else I should change that could help performance?

Thanks

You can try bumping the speed - it defaults to 604.8 MHz. 710 should be fine, though some people run faster. I keep it at 604.8 to get decent performance with good battery life, but I run all of my ROMs the same speed.

In addition to what doogald said, I also use spare parts to set all the animations either to fast or off. Not as cool looking, but it makes it feel a little quicker. Also, depending on how the launcher is performing, I'll set it to be locked in memory both under launcherpro settings and CM settings.

Ya, I was wondering about this setting because I've noticed many times that launcherpro seems to be either crashing or like reloading all the widgets when I push the home key. Would enabling those settings fix the problem?

Also, are you guys keeping the governor setting to OnDemand?

That's the reason I enable them. It seems to solve the problem (I don't remember having issues after changing those settings).

I use SetCPU because I like the profiles (though I did see a post that said the CM7 cpu settings will not drain battery when the screen is off). I usually stick to ondemand for my main setting, but lately I've been trying smartass for screen off to see if there is a noticeable difference. doogald will know more about the governor settings than I do.

I've been using smartass with GSB to see if it gives better battery life with acceptable performance. It seems to be working fine, but it's only a couple of days and the weekend, so light house so far. It's too early to tell.

I do change the "keep in memory" settings both in CYanogenMod settings and LP settings and it seems to be very stable and holding LP so that it doesn't restart. It seems to be working for me.

I personally find GSB to be the smoothest ROM I've used. It seems to manage its memory better than Froyo did (without Autokiller) and I love being able to dump everything onto the SD card and using cache2cache, which is allowing me to have a lot more apps than Froyo did without slowing down.

So far, unless I'm imagining it, smartass seems to be a bit snappier than ondemand without overclocking beyond default.

regarding JIT,some folks have reported their phone to be smoother/snappier with it off. some report no difference... give it some time both ways and see if checking it on or off makes a difference for you.

i have it checked on right now,but ive run froyo roms with it off and not noticed it making much of a difference in smoothness either way.

regarding set cpu,i use 3 additional profiles: screen off, charging, and battery <15%. i set the min at 245 and the max at the factory 528. the main profile i set as 528 min/710 max. right now im using ondemand as the governor... i did try smartass once before, but dint really give it much time. maybe in a couple days ill change it back and try and get a better comparison.

seems no matter what i do im destined to at least one "plug in period" per day to get me thru to the end... ive never been able to get a whole day out of any phone(eris, droid 1,or incredible. the incredible is especially bad  ) on a single charge. sure i could make it last if i wanted to,but if i dont play with it,whats the point in having it? if all i wanted to do was make calls and text i could go back to my env touch, wich would get me 2 or 3 days on a charge if i didnt use the internet ;)

Good call, but do any not have a launcher included? I'm talkin' as plain a ROM as they come.

I believe KGB has or at least had the stock gingerbread launcher. I've also seen it available in the market, just search "Gingerbread Launcher" or "Android 2.3 Launcher" and you should find it. I believe I saw somewhere that it was really laggy on the Eris, but you could always try it out.

nice! thanks!

And do you know of a vanilla Froyo (2.2) rom?

There is nothing truly vanilla. I think that the closest to vanilla is CELB Froyo, but that's a CyanogenMod ROM as well. CM is based on AOSP, but does add its own customizations, including ADW as the default launcher.

I think that I have read of the default Nexus launcher being out there to flash, but, not being interested in that myself, I never really looked.

I think that the closest to pure AOSP ROM for the Eris is Vanilla 2.0.4, but that is a 2.1 ROM.

You'll have to excuse my indolence, I normally provide links to these when I mention them, but I'm in a bit of a hurry, so just search the xda-developers Eris development forum for these to get download links and install instructions.
