Rogers Dream 1.6 Update

With this offer added to the mix, I have to add the following to my earlier post.

@ROGERS/@HTC

- The internet is search-able.
- You may think that offering the few complainers "on steroid" a Magic will solve your problems.
- However, this is a short term fix.
- The Internet is searchable and everyone who can't run some applications in the future will eventually look to upgrade to Donut and Eclair.
- And when they do, they will find this forum and other blogs
- They will learn the truth
- They will complain all the way to the Office of the president ( we have a precedent here)
- The problem will not go away
- It needs to be fixed properly

The FIX:
- An HTC Magic (or other upgradable phones) for all
- or An upgradability path for the HTC dream

Come on Rogers
Come on HTC
Take this advice.

It will make you look nice.
It will make your customers happy with you and their device

Don't take that offer guys there trying to pawn off some other android phone on you that they are just tryying to clear out anyways. Those htc magics sell on kijiji for 250 now. The deal I got from rogers o of p seems like a much better deal. After argueing with with henri from the o of p for awhile I got them to offer me a blackberry 9700 for free. This is the newest blackberry on the market. Ya ya I can hear u all now" but I want an android phone not a shitty blackberry". That why as soon as you get it you do what I did and sell it for 500 to a friend. They are going for 550 on kijiji so you can sell it buy a magic and still have around $250 for yourself to pay some of your overpriced rogers bills. They also did not make me send back my dream which is what I'm typeing on now lol.

Just thought id add this msg to the newest page so people know what the best offer I could get was. I figured if I left it on page 24 some people skipping to the last page might not see it.

Michael,

Wow, just, um, wow.

Why did she go off on a Sense tangent?
I don't see where you asked about sense?!? Not only that, but on my Dream, even with apps loaded and running, I consistently had 20-40MB RAM available.

Now, if Sense requires more than 20-40MB RAM, then I think you folks are doing something a bit screwed up. But, again, we both KNOW RAM isn't the problem....

ATTENTION HTC:
There's only TWO (2,II) reasonable options here:

1) You're playing the Ignorance card (which isn't accepted here, so put it away)
2) Trying to blow smoke up our tailpipes

First off, if #2, it will NOT pay off for you in the long run...
As I've said before, the average buyer for the Android-based phone, is NOT a dumb schmuck.

If #1, well, I'll help you out, free of charge, not even a consulting fee:

There ya go! Free, full access to the Android source code, just as it has been for a LOOOOONG time. Heck, I have the source code on my home machines. You're telling me HTC doesn't have the Android 1.6 source code? I call BS on that - MAJOR BS!

But, we all know HTC has the source - I mean, HTC had to write quite a few of the drivers, didn't they? Yeah.... you know it, admit it already, and just SAY that you don't want to support already-sold-no-more-money-to-make-from phones... At least you'd have a chance at saving SOME face from being honest.

'nuff said

PS - Michael, don't feel TOO badly about a STUPID response from HTC.
I've sent no less than about 3-4 emails to them via the contact link since mid-December,a and have yet to receive a SINGLE response!

PPS - sorry for the long post, but it looks like HTC might've needed instructions on getting the Android source, since apparently they are claiming they don't have it. Just thought I'd do them a favor...

T

HTC has the code believe me, it all boils down to cost.

That's ridiculous. If there is _any_ extension to the contract it should not be any longer than the length already used up since the original phone was purchased. I.E. If I bought my phone July 1, I should only have to agree to an extension of 6 months.

Asking them to extend by another 3 years is dumb, since it is the same as making them buy the phone _again_ which is NOT an exchange, and your coworker should point that out. In fact, if to get a NEW phone they would have to extend their contract by 3 years, it would be cheaper to buy out the _existing_ contract! At least then they'd be punishing Rogers.

My coworker called Rogers last night and they offered him the Magic IF he renewed his contract.

Is this the case with everyone else?

I really don't want to be stuck with Rogers for another 3 years.

Rogers would offer this to Joe Blow off the street. If the product is being deprecated what do they care if you get a free upgrade. Your head is worth $5000 on a three year term. Would you give someone a doorstop if they handed you 5 grande?

Yes I know Magic is getting an upgrade but it would seem that the writing is on the wall. This is not sour grapes (as I am stuck with an HTC Dream) it is the unfortunate reality of beta testing products on your dime. It goes on all the time - think Big Pharma (Vioxx)

The CES in Vegas is pumping out all kinds of hype re: next wave of gadgets. The big news which has usurped the CES headlines is the Nexus One.

While most on this list were aware of the pending release, the majority of users have never heard of HTC or are just becoming aware.

I suggest that we look at forums relating to the new device and link them back to the issues which have plagued the HTC Dream.

Why would one spend $550 for a device that may likely be the beta and ultimately obsolete like the Dream?

I think if potential purchasers are made aware of HTC's practices they may reconsider being a guinea pig. This should get Google's attention and for my money they carry the biggest stick.

Use the network to pass along the truth. The rest will take care of itself.

I have begun by posting to Stuff.tv CES : CES 2010: Hands-on with the Google Nexus One This site gets reasonable exposure according to Alexa stuff.tv - Site Info from Alexa. If others take a few minutes to find prominent blogs and forums relating to Nexus One, then we can use the hype of that story to call attention to HTC issues that are plaguing the Dream.

Just to let everyone know, with my deal and them sending me the 9700 blackberry for free and letting me keep my dream. I made it clear to them that they are not extending my contract and the o of p agreed with that. Don't take there bullshit deal, fight it to the end keep calling. It only took me 2 calls to the o of p to convince them on this deal. Do not send them back your phone, do not extend your contract, and don't take there offer of a magic as you should get the 9700 sell it on kijiji for 500 then you can buy the magic for 250 off kijiji aswell.

I should like to point out two things.

1. Members of Rogers staff ARE checking this blog routinely. If they believe everyone will do as you have suggested, they may very well just say "Tough luck" and offer Dream users nothing. Please don't jeopardize this for Dream users who legitimately want to exchange for a new phone, like the Magic, to get the update.

2. Even if Rogers didn't care, not everyone is the kind of person who is ready/willing/knowledgeable to sell something online. It is a risky proposition, fraught with fraud, so... caveat emptor.

I echo this Mike! Not to slam the effort of Androidandrogersdontmix to assist but this cause will lose credibility if one were to stoop to tactics which we would not welcome upon ourselves.

IMO - There is plenty that both Rogers and HTC have brought upon themselves. Shine a light on the facts and the consumers will connect the dots. I see nothing wrong with alerting would be consumers that they should beware. If reporting facts causes Rogers to pull back then there is a much bigger scandal afoot. I think consumer advocacy is not only a right but a responsibility. Keep HTC and Rogers honest, but do so in a reputable way.

Nonetheless thanks to Androidandrogersdontmix for the passion.

Rogers is not going to say tough luck to every dream customer because of what one idiot(me) lolhas commented on a forum. Let's not tippy toe around this anymore I'm just fed up so I did what I could to make the most out of this situation. I don't see anything wrong with what I did either or why they would be angry because of it. I worked out the best deal for myself that I could, which is exactly what they do when they get you to sign up, get the best deal for themselves. They never once said to me while since we are sending you this you have to use it as your everyday phone. It was sent to me it is now my property to do what I want with. I thought my best course of action was to sell it to finance a magic and keep some money for myself. If that is wrong I'm sorry. I guess now would be a good time to thank you mjschmidt and the others that have helped as much. Without all of you leading the pack we couldn't have got as far as we have.

This is my take and I don't want to start a war here.

The cost to Rogers for an HTC Magic or a BlackBerry is about the same.
Iphone is not accessible for cost reasons.

Rogers want to solve this issue. They want happy customers.

Why should they care if after upgrading your HTC Dream, to a Magic, a Blackberry or phone X, you sell it?

@androidandrogersdontmix: No one is making a judgement of right or wrong. There is technically nothing wrong or illegal with what you did. I'm just saying, we don't want to be giving Rogers a reason to say no. :)

@boualem: For the record... No-Contract cost of HTC Dream at Rogers = $599.99. No-Contract cost of an iPhone 3G 8G = $580.00. So....

So...

The price the customer is asked to pay for a no contract is not the same as the price Rogers pays the original manufacturer.

This is why a Blakberry that has a NO-contract-cost of $599 is offered to people whereas an Iphone (with a a no-contract-cost of $580 is not offered

That's also why Wind sells the same Blackberry 9700 for $450 (closer to the actual cost but still with a markup) while rogers sells it for $599.

It would be great if we could here something from RogersMary about this as am sure after reading this forum and other sites and blogs that Dream users are not happy with with the HTC responses to the problem .It seems unless Rogers applies more pressure to HTC the problem needs to be dealt with via Rogers and what type of compensation they are going to provide.

Anything short of new phone (Magic,BB,Iphone) or 1.6 is unacceptable.

Rogers could apply pressure. I'm not sure how much leverage they have.

They could also apply $$$$.

If you offer to pay for an service (the upgrade), no business minded executive (at HTC) is going to say no.

As other posters have mentioned above, they have had some success going directly to the OotP and demanding an exchange to a new phone (including either a Black Berry or a Magic) at no cost.

Dream owners who would consider this as an option should start pestering the OotP for an exchange. Don't bother with regular customer service.

Tell them you want to exchange the Dream for a Magic at no extra cost, and no extension to the contract.

1. The Dream & Magic cost the same.
2. we were misled into buying the dream, since it came out at the SAME time as the Magic.
3. Other users have been offered this (mention the forums).
4. Extending the contact would be the same as having to buy the phone, NOT an exchange. That is not logical.

See what they say.

I think/hope that even rogers would see that as a mistake. Right now the only reason that rogers doesn't have people charging the corporate head quarters with pitchforks and torches is because 75% of the population that has the Dream and WANTS Android 1.6 has rooted their phone. I think/hope that rogers has realized this and they won't request another "perfect" SPL. Then again I have been wrong before, hell I have even been wrong earlier on today :D

by ignoring anyone else do you mean rogers, telus and/or bell or do you mean shlubs off the street like you and me? I have not even bothered contacting HTC because my relationship is with rogers not HTC. For an example I don't contact Dodge when I need service (or service was done poorly) I contact the dealership where I purchased the vehicle. Just my point of view.
