Quick question.
If I get a Google Voice number how does that all work.
A co-worker has an invite and I'm thinking of taking it.
Plus I requested one but who knows how long that will take to get.
Can I make and receive calls with my Google # and not use my VZ min.?
I know I can text for free.
Also how reliable and quick is it compared to using your regular #?

I only use it for voice mail. I have it set to override my VZW voice mail. I can choose to get an email notification of the voice mail, but I just downloaded the app on my phone. I have it set to refresh every 15 or 30 minutes to check for voice mail. But you can load the app and check it manually if you know you have a missed call. You can also listen to your voice mail on your computer. As far as calls and texts go, I believe all that is done VOIP. So as long as you have signal, or on wifi(?) you should be able to make and receive calls and texts. But like I said earlier, I just use it for voice mail...and I love it. I have certain people to receive a certain message when they call.

I was asked to check into it for work as an experiment. I have had it for four (4) months now. Prior to getting my HTC Eris, I only used it at work as it was difficult to have to call in on my cell phone to use previously on my Palm Treo 700W.

I exported my work contacts from Outlook to my Google account (follow the instructions on Google Voice) and with a simple click on my computer on the contact; it calls my phone at work (or which ever phone I want it to call me on) and connects me to the contact. When people call me on my Google number that are in my contacts (I keep most there for this reason) I can tell it where to contact me, and it will ring as many phone numbers as I tell it. So for work contacts, it will ring my cell and office phone and I can answer either one. For personal contacts, it rings my cell and home phone. For my kids, it rings all of my numbers. I can even switch phones on the fly - say I'm in the office talking to a client and need to leave, I click the button on the phone and it transfers the call to my cell phone and they hear nothing on their end and I can head to my next meeting, call it a day, or head to lunch without interrupting them (again follow the directions on the Google Voice website).

As for use on the HTC Eris, I have Google Voice set as my default for all calls and anyone getting a call from me sees my Google phone number, not my cell number. On my phone you do not even know I use it. As for if I am still using minutes on Verizon, I am not sure, but would say yes, as you are still using the network to place the call? I have not heard any complaints on quality of the calls, but I have had probably 4 or 5 occasions when I had some difficulty placing a call - system error. I guess I have never noticed any delay issues on the calls either.

As for Voicemail, you can set up different voicemail messages for different people or groups easily. Coworkers (separate group set up) get my work voicemail, personal get another, and clients another, I merely have to have them in my contacts on Google Voice. It's all very simple.

I like it because I give out one number to everyone, they can always reach me without calling several numbers.

If one of your coworkers has Google Voice, he can send out up to three (3) invites through his account?

Good Luck.

GV is not a VOIP provider, but it may end up that way in the near future. Call quality will depend totally on your own reception, as would any normal VZW call. It basically just connects calls at this point. That and the voicemail thing mentioned above, which, IMO, is the best part of GV. The only thing you lose doing that is the standard voicemail alerts/counts in the status bar (unless you install the GV app). But as mentioned, you can get email notifications for it too.

You still use your minutes when calling out or receiving calls via GV, but I have heard that if you add the GV number(s) (the ones google uses to call you or that it uses to connect you to outgoing calls) to your 'Fav 5/10' or whatever vzw calls it, you can manage to make/take calls without using your minutes. You can try it, but YMMV.

Hope that helps some.

BigDaddy, I had the same question and looked it up on the Google site and according to them, Yes you will use your minutes. GV is more of a receptionist than a phone company (to put it in the words of Google). Your GV number is basically an answering service that forwards those calls to your cell. The voice mail (VZW's equvilent of visual voicemail) is free along with the SMS (text) message portion of the app. I hope that is more of a direct answer for you.
