Help Help Please: Only have 1X/4G...no 3G

So, i got a replacement phone and being the dummy i was, i tried to restore a nandroid backup from the previous phone and of course ran into problems trying to restore. I didnt realize about the RSA key being phone specific and all that jazz.
I was on CM7 nighlty 23 and noticed that it was in 1X in a clearly 3G/4G area so i switched to 4G and it even worked but could never get 3G to work. I toggled on 3G and also toggled on and off 4G in different combinations and the mobile network and airplane mode and stuff....nothing as far as 3G went.

Anyways, I used unrevoked's S-ON tool and then did the most current RUU and loaded up the stock sense ROM(rooted) and EVERYTHING worked fine. I was a bit relieved thinking I was good, plus I had downloaded the Wimax RSA Key checker and it said my keys were present (i am assuming they are from the old phone though).

So I go to load a fresh CM7 nightly up and I have no 3G. I try everything i know of again and nothing as far as 3G goes. 4G and 1X only. I switch to MikFroyo and everything works. I flash CM7 RC2 thinking maybe it will work there and nothing.

I guess my problem is on any AOSP ROM, I do not have 3G present, but Sense ROM's everything works?

Any help would be amazing! Thanks

Actually, it is the exact opposite, an AOSP ROM is more accurate.

There are several things to look at when comparing 3G to 1x on your EVO.

First, are you running a sense ROM or an AOSP ROM? A sense ROM will have eight signal bars while an AOSP ROM will show four. That means that one bar on AOSP = two bars on sense. If you have 2 bars showing on AOSP and four bars showing on sense, the signal strength is identical.

Second, sense ROMs always show 3G even if you are actually on 1x(EV-DO). Also, sense only indicates voice signal which is why it may appear to be a stronger signal (more bars). AOSP ROMs more accurately indicate signal strength for data (3G), which is why you often see your signal vacilating between 3G and 1x, especially when sending an SMS/MMS. Additionally, a few Sense ROMs (EViO and MikFroyo come to mind) accurately indicate data signal strength. This is most often 1x(EV-DO) on the Sprint network.

Don't be fooled into believing you once had a stronger signal, you probably didn't. If you use your EVO in the same place you have always used your EVO, nothing has changed except the accuracy of your signal indication. Switch back to a typical sense ROM and you'll see 3g all day long.

In rare cases, there is an actual issue. You'll know this as your activities will slow down drastically from previous performance. If this is the case, the best fix is as follows: *Caution: Always make a nandroid of your current ROM in case anything goes awry.

You will need a few things before you get started:

HowTo:
  1. Boot into recovery
  2. Flash Calkulin's CLEAR_TEMP.zip and/or wipe everything from recovery
  3. Flash Calkulin's FORMAT_ALL.zip
  4. Flash latest rooted OTA
  5. Reboot
  6. Go to the dialer and enter ##3282#
  7. Select "Edit Mode" on the popup
  8. Enter your MSL as your password
  9. Select "Data Profiles">Menu>"Restore"
  10. Phone will reboot in 10 seconds or you can select "OK".
  11. "Hands free activation" will appear after phone reboots followed by PRL update and then firmware update. (Go ahead and update PRL, but probably best not to update firmware.)
  12. Boot into recovery
  13. Wipe and flash FORMAT_ALL.zip
  14. Nand restore to your previous setup.

You should see an improvement in your 3G signal. If you don't, then you probably didn't have an issue to begin with and it was more likely the scenario listed at the beginning of this post. If there are severe connection or speed problems, then there is likely a deeper issue with your Sprint service and you should give them a call.

Thank you so much for your time explaining the difference between the readouts on AOSP and Sense. I did not know that. I did however come to realize the night before I took it into Sprint that even though it was reading 3G on the stock Sense ROM, I was getting about 100kbps on average so it made me think I really was not getting 3G. You confirmed that for me in your post.

I just took it into Sprint and told them my 3G is not working correctly monday and got a call back yesterday (tuesday) saying that they had my replacement there. Got to love their customer service sometimes!

Now I am fully rooted running the latest CMnightly and savaged-zen kernel pushing 9Mbps on 4G and about 2Mbps give or take 3G!

That's awesome, glad it worked out for you. Also great to see some credit given to Sprint as a service provider. I've been with them all, and I mean every major provider in the US and Sprint has been as good or better than every one of them.

Justs

...data results are typically much better if the prl update is cancelled after the handsfree activation. There is a rare occasion that it's the opposite.

I have a whole thread on this..link is in my sig

Interesting original post. Also glad to see the update. The update is more typical of what I have experienced. Sometimes PRLs are not available in certain areas as well. I recently manually pushed 01115 via EPST as I was not being provided the option in the update menu. That particular PRL has been significantly more consistent for me.

Thank you very much! I had the same issue and that worked for me. :)

Glad it helped.
