They'll do anything to get you signed on contract for two years! Think about it.
~$65/month for 2 years = $1,560. They can drop two or three hundred up front to ensure that future revenue stream.

Now its the fact that its all hardware bad software. Atrix is an inferior phone.
The funniest part of the pricing is that Verizon is charging 250 for the thunderbolt lol
The reason its cheap, is most likely cause it runs on old tech. Everything about the Inspire spec wise was already in the Desire HD (sans HSPA+). The Desire HD was released in October. Don't get me wrong I own an Inspire and love it.

that was going to be my second point,
because the inspire and desire are virtually the same thing and the desire already has been sold since Oct then i guess it would give HTC the ability to lower cost especially in a crazy smartphone market/competition
also remember now that AT&T is no longer the sole provider of the iPhone, they want to attract as many new customers as possible! Having a great phone at an insanely low price is one great way to do it!
(buying out the 4th largest carrier in the US is another )

Heck, compared to my old HTC tilt 2, this inspire blows it away in every aspect. I paid the full $99 upgrade price, and still feel like I got a good deal on the phone.

I think that LittleAnt hit the nail on the head. AT&T wants to attract high end android phone fans, so they offer the Inspire for ridiculously low prices - I paid $59.00 for mine - and figure to make their money off the two year contract we had to agree to.
