Well its been a while since i was here, i had an HTC hero and really did a fair bit with regards custom ROM's etc and recovery etc but it has been about 18months since i last did anything with regards Android so i need a bit of basic help to get me into the swing of things.

Yesterday i got my lovely new Galaxy S and this morning i managed to root it using the oneclick method. My questions are these, does rooting still have that recovery mode that it used to do? i recall making backup ROMs to the SD card. Also the PC suite said there is an upgrade to JP8, would upgrading de-root my phone? I would like to if possible install a ROM without all of the Orange crap that is on there but im not sure im ready to dabble with that lot just yet, like i said its been a while.

Thanks in advance, and its nice to be back after using symbian for so long

Upgrading probably will unroot the phone. It happens in most cases.

Recovery mode exists by default on the Galaxy S, but to backup roms you need CWM. Since you just got your Galaxy S, it's either on 2.2 or 2.2.1., which means 3e recovery. The difference between 2e and 3e is that 2e allows the flashing of unsigned zip files, while 3e doesn't. So you will need to flash a kernel that has 2e recovery. I suggest flashing either speedmod or advanced voodoo.

Once you flashed the kernel, you can back up your rom. Note that the backup doesn't actually contain the /efs folder, which is where your imei is stored. In the past, some roms are known to corrupt the /efs folder. There's no way to recover your imei once the folder gets corrupted, so make a back up of it. You can find more instructions in the sticky guide thread.

There are a myraid of custom roms out there right now. Unfortunately both CyanogenMod 7 and MIUI are still buggy, so stay away from them unless if you don't mind losing a few functionality on your phone. Also, Samsung is slated to release 2.3 soon. We already have an alpha Gingerbread rom from Samsung, but it's buggy as well, so you might want to wait a little while longer.

i dont want to start a new thread so i will just this one.. The phone is now rooted but that is all, i have not messed with no lag fixes etc so the phone is still orange branded but used Rom Manager to install the recovery software.

I like the look of Darkys 9.5 Extreme, do i just do the update.zip technique via recovery or do i need to do some other stuff first? i keep seeing that you need 9.2 first but not everybody says that. What should i do?

many thanks in advance - PS i use mac so i would like to use CWM if possible

No you don't need 9.2. It's only for people who are coming from a custom rom. If you already have cwm recovery, enter recovery, choose install from zip and browse to the rom file. It has to be on the internal SD and not the external SD - you cannot enter the external SD while in recovery mode.
