Who's planning to get the HTC Evo 3D

I still have my OG EVO and the wife loves it. I know there will not be a multimedia rich device as EVO 3D come launch. EVO 3D supporting; MHL 3.0, latest Sense UI, HTC Media Link, DLNA,SRS Dolby,3D Streaming. I think one could conclude this was built form the ground up to act more like a HTPC. I was planning on a EVO 3D regardless, but this is just extra frosting on the cake. (Sold)

Whats the point of being able to work with HTC Media Link when I have still yet to see or hear anything about when that device is going to be released. It was shown off and announced long ago no?

If a few days ago is "long ago"...then yes.

On specs alone, I'd buy the 3D in a heartbeat. But the latest batch of high end HTC phones on other carriers have had locked bootloaders. I won't buy this unless I can root it and load ROMs. Even with the new Sense I want the option to switch back to AOSP via Cyanogen. If the 3D is as rootable as the Evo 4G was, then I'll get it. If not, it's the Nexus for me.

I'll wait for the reviews to come out on the EVO 3-D form customers. I purchased my EVO 4G when it was first available for pre-order on Sprint, then I started getting those constant reboots, I eventually had to replace it with a refurnished EVO. My contract doesn't end until next year, hopefully there is a EVO III for sale before my contract is up.

when I said "long ago" I was referring to the HTC Media link device NOT the EVO 3D. The Media Link device was shown way back at CES if im not mistaken.

I don't think rooting was too much the issue with really any device. It's being locked out of custom kernels. That is my understanding anyway. Either way I think most companies will follow suite. Our days of "complete freedom" are likely coming to an end.

A locked bootloader wil tend to always have a way through it developers can find/hack to unlock it.
Now if they ever start to encrypt them then it might be a different story and might require actual hardware mods to get around them from what i've read.

The Evo 4G had a locked bootloader. So did the Nexus and the Incredible. I think people are getting confused between a locked bootloader and a locked bootloader with encryption.

Anyone who has fully rooted their Evo (aka S-OFF / NAND unlocked) has unlocked their bootloader. Back in the early days, the popular unrevoked method did not know how to unlock the bootloader; it only gave you superuser. Full root method was a bit complicated for some until someone wrapped it in a GUI called simpleroot.

Motorola's Droid X and all subsequent devices (except the Xoom) came with an encrypted bootloader armed with an e-fuse. Trip the e-fuse, and the phone bricks. Not only was the bootloader locked and encrypted, it was also tamper-proof. I don't claim to know all the details (not my phone, not my problem), but I hear the bootloader is still uncracked. Some things are pretty darn hackproof, and an encrypted bootloader is one of them.

We're not seeing a change in policy by HTC here, despite what you might be reading about the Thunderbolt et. al. The bootloaders all ship locked. So far, there's never been an encrypted HTC bootloader. But if the 3D becomes the first (again, no indication why it would set the precedent), I would have to think twice about that phone.

Thanks for the clarification. I did mean the ability to load custom ROMs. Even if I can only use the 3D capabilities with Sense, I still want the option to run AOSP. And with the specs on this thing, Cyanogen would probably run as smooth as butter.

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on reports about the 3D. The new Sense looks much nicer than the old version, but I won't buy a phone where I can't load custom ROMs. If I can do that with the 3D, it will be mine. If not, hello Nexus 4G.

I'll be getting this phone as well. This one of the best threads I have seen on this phone. All the other threads seem to bash this phone for having 3D. There is so much more to this phone than 3D. Not sure what everyone else is looking for in a phone, but for me this phone has what I want and need. I would be happy with this phone even if it didn't have 3D.

I hope when it arrives in Europe that it will have the latest version of Sense (no reason why it shouldn't but the photos so far show it to have the current release not the one with the new dock style).

All this needs is NFC to be THE uber phone of 2011. I'm not that fussed about the 3D, but as part of the overall specs this phone looks superb and a more than worthy upgrade from my Desire.

Can honestly say with the way the evo 3d is looking I can live without rooting it. Currently my phone is rooted with MYn newest rom. But 3D come on. Just that makes me want it. Then the speed this thing will have. Only thing I will miss is my kickstand that I do not use except to show I can.

Given how much a root-enabled phone was capable of increasing battery life, I'm going to side with the "must root" camp, unless for whatever reason the battery life is awesome with the stock configuration. Somehow I just don't see that being the case.

Time will surely tell. The Evo Shift is scary-good at battery life, stock - whereas the Thunderbolt seems to require the same care and feeding as the Evo to do well, and given the Shift's performance, that has really surprised me.

I'd like to think that for so many tasks, the 2-core SoC in the 3D, once properly exploited, will allow speedy tasking at lower speeds - hence - lower battery consumption for what we Evo users see as processor-intensive tasks.

I also think that being able to ssh and scp to the phone is going to be a must for me. I'm pretty spoiled at being able to transfer files to/from phone wirelessly.

What else.... I'd imagine there's going to be carrier crapware that I'm going to want to remove.... Wifi tether is good to have, even though I seldom use it. It does come in handy when in a bind.... I have to think that the devs will figure out how to get more out of the hardware with custom kernels.... I'm not much of a custom ROM guy, but I do like to try some here and there just to see what's possible.

I'm just starting to get into HDMI mirroring with my Evo, but assuming connecting a keyboard/mouse to the Evo via BT requires root, I'll want that capability on the Evo 3G for when I mirror.

There's just so much tinkering to do once rooted. Sometimes I feel that you really miss out on the Android experience without exploring outside of what the manufacturer/carrier wants you to see.

I honestly dont think theres anyway they wont root this phone. Evo is my first phone and the first phone i ever rooted. But how quick its taking phones to be rooted and how many people will be getting this phone. It should be rooted within a week. If not sooner. I love my rooted evo. But the 3D is AMAZING. DUAL CORE. It also does come with a bigger battery then the og evo. Now if only it can use the same battery as the evo I will be set since i have 5 chinese ebay batteries that I currently use.

I can understand why HTC isn't releasing phones that give you a few upgrades like Apple. But HTC went all out cosmetic wise with the phone. When you see a phone you immediately know if you want that phone or not just like a car. I saw the 3D and I don't like the way the phone looks. The Pyramid looks sexier to me but I think I'm going to wait and see if another EVO comes out after the EVO 3D. I will just hold onto my EVO 4G for now.

I have a feeling when everyone is due for an upgrade from the HTC EVO 4G next June, HTC will have a great surprise waiting for folks.

Besides, Apple might come out with a 3D phone...ole beans.
