Root newbie to rooting, couple questions

I have had my incredible for going on 3 months now, and while I love it, I know how much more I can get out of it based on reading posts in this forum. I've been trolling in this forum for a while now, trying to learn as much as ibcan before rooting but i have a few questions.
My baseband version is 2.15.00.07.28, that's the radio, correct? And I have a 2.15?
I want to avoid changing radios, and am looking for a good rom/kernel combo that works well with my radio. Id like something that is not sense based, and offers fast, stable performance, with good battery life.

Miui or cm7 is the way to go then. Both offer exactly what you are looking for.

Yes the 2.15.00.07.28 is your radio it's what I use. Definitely give CM7 a shot (latest nightly is #21 it is very stable, feature complete, and battery life is excellent). Optional, but recommended is that your recovery version is 3.0.0.8 it will be in bright orange text. If your unsure about this you can use ROM Manager app to update your recovery. Scroll to the bottom to "All ClockworkMod Recoveries" and choose "3.0.0.8"

I am having a tough time rooting my phone. I have the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4G. Model number SHG-T959V, Firmware version 2.2.1, Baseband version T959VUVKB5, Kernel Version 2.6.32.9, Build number FROYO.VUVKB5. I have not been able to find any videos or articles on how to root this particular phone. I am able to mount the SD card using Samsungs PC Studio. However I am unable to mount my phone in usb debugging mode so that I can root my phone. I am running Windows 7 64bit on my HP laptop. Can any one tell me what I need to do?

Ok, I've been leaning towards cm7, guess ill give it a try. I'm going to read up as much as i can the next couple days making sure I know exactly what i have to do to root my phone, but I'm gonna do it this weekend. I also want to learn how to completely remove the root, getting my phone completely like it was when I bought it.

Honestly CM7 is the best vanilla ROM for the Inc. Your smart to read up it will pay off I promise you. Both rooting and un-rooting are easy, safe, and relatively quick....that is if you know what your doing

Have fun with it, double check things before you do them and be patient. Ask questions if they arise

Ok so let me see if Ive got the roting process correct..uninstall verizon and htc's sync programs, but keep the drivers for the phone, install unrevoked 3 (don't really wanna do forever), hook up the phone and then use their program for the 1 click root.
And to flash roms I should download the file into the root of the sd card and then use rom manager to flash them? I also plan on doing titanium and nandroid backups before I start flashing roms. Am I forgetting anything?

why would you not want to be S-OFF? its not really "forever" you can use unrevoked to turn the security back on if you want to. being S-OFF allows you to install some things(like recoverys or radios) in hboot and is a very handy tool to have. it also greatly decreases the likelyhood of something bad happening to your phone.

i know yuo said you dont want to change radios,but heres an example of how it can save you:say something happens to your clockwork recovery and your phone wont boot into the operating system so you can reflash it with rom manager. if you have S-OFF no biggie,you just install clockwork thru hboot,then use clockwork to flash a rom or backup.last and not least,i believe you need to be S-OFF to flash the PB31IMG file that takes you back to unrooted stock.

and while were on the subject... i personally dont use rom manager. ive read alot of screwy things that have happend to peoples phones with its use alot of people have used it without issue,but it has caused prollems for some. IMO the safest possible way to flash roms is: download rom to PC,transfer rom to phone via usb cable,boot into recovery to backup/wipe/flash.

i also think its great that your doing your research prior to modding your phone have fun rooting and roming!

Are you using a guide to help walk you through this process? I stongly recommend it Use this guide it's what I used eons ago, but it has since been updated.

I'm using the guide now, read through it a few times, and i'm following it step by step, no suprises so far

"Copy the unrevoked3 recovery reflash tool to a new directory on your desktop and run it. It will extract a bunch of files, including drivers for the android phone."

when i run the recovery reflash tool, it just jumps to the unrevoked screen waiting for my phone to be connected, and in usb de-bugging mode, nothing was extracted.

i've done everything else in that guide jbdan posted, including installing the drivers on the phone when it is in hboot usb.

on the other issue,i do seem to remember having to download and install the drivers manually,and my phone dint actually say "hboot usb"... also the first time i tried it i accidentally put my phone in fastboot,not hboot

Looks like Unrevoked changed their file from an archived exe to a single executable. Nothing stays the same for very long.

I'll update the guide.

Step 3 on the doug piston site helped to identify that the trackball needed to be used AFTER the reflash step was done. So far so good, looking forward to all of the custom ROMs out there. well,obviously you cannot run the s-on/s-off tool if your phone is not rooted

so,yes,you do need to do unrevoked 3 first.

however,if you root with the current unrevoked3,the forever s-off tool must now be a part of its process,as at the end you are left with an s-off bootloader. no need to run the forever tool afterward.

I researched rooting for a couple of days b4 rooting last night. I came across several postings/articles that said unrevoked 4ever is not needed anymore.
