1)First find an image or photo. Any picture you can get on your PC. will do. 2)open the file up in a image program to start the conversion process( if you do not have one here is a link...Gimp - Free Software Download | Freeze) ... select the image button in your program to scale the size( I believe this size varies per phone brand. A little research and you should find yours). for the HTC EVO its 480x800. there will be two portions A. size and B. resolution. Make the size to 480x800. Leave the resolution part alone it will be linked and @ the same value.
3) find the portion to view the properties of your file and insure it is an "RGB COLOR" image if not in the same tab as image there should be a colorize button click it and select RGB COLOR.
4) alter your image in any way you want
5) bring up the file menu and select "SAVE AS" type in splash.bmp (not splash1.bmp) (most programs will automatically turn this in to a BMP file after you have entered this in). If not there will be a button to select "FILE BY EXTENTION"when this screen comes up select "BMP" then you need to go to advanced options and select 24bit depth. "SAVE"
6) down load this tool Make and Flash Your Own Android Splash Screen with Splash Screen Creator
7)fallow its instructions to the "T".... For some users (like me) this tool will only provide us with the needed file type for our new splash..If your HBOOT version is 2.1 or more then you are in this boat... If not you do not need to read any further.. This tool will complete the process for you.)
8) after the tool does its thing it will have created another file in the same folder that the tool is in. It will be labeled "splash.img".. we need to rename this file "Splash1.img"
9) down load a "SIGNED. zip" (OR READY TO FLASH) file and extract it...
10) take the android-info.txt file from the file you just extracted along with your new splash1.img file and 7-ZIP them together. and then rename this folder PC36IMG.zip........................and if you have read through this entire post then by now you know how to flash it to your phone
good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That would be awesome! I would love to learn how to do them!

so push it using adb? fastboot flash splash1

no..... The tool will do that for you if your hboot version is less then 2.1
This is not a problem however because it still creates the .IMG file for you(which is the hardest thing to obtain this is the only way I have found to make a custom splash screen with my current version of hboot....)

Mr. Ed has a thread to Down Grade your HBOOT but it states with HARD WARE version 0004 ( which I have ) it is not wise to do this and you can easily BRICK your phone..

Like I said its not a problem.... fallow the instruction in my post. If you are like me and have the HBOOT problem... simply take your newly created IMG file... ( which if you dont know is your picture that you want for your splash screen in a different formate ) and place it on your desk top.... then go to this link and down load the file at the bottom of his picture...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=972438
now extract this file to your desk top.... it will have two files in it.. delete the .IMG file... you will be left with a file called android. info.tex
take YOUR img file and zipp it with the tex file.. rename it "PC36IMG.zip" ( if you do this and the zipper is not on the file then just name it PC36IMG......,with out zip( because its hiding lol) plug your nphone in to the usb port... and you know the rest.. if not just ask and any one in this fourm can explain it further... with out hasatation (including me) its a very simple process

One note to add.... If your hboot """IS""" less the 2.1 you MUST have hboot drivers installed on your computer for the tool to be able to flash the .zip file to your phone.. ADB driver will not work...( that is just your HTC driver)
( you can tell if you have the hboot drivers installed by:)
1) Power your phone down.. wait 10 seconds then press volume down and power at the same time .. Give your phone a moment to run the script
2) when it is complete press volume down to "HBOOT USB". It will then run another script.. when that is done plug your usb cable from your phone to your PC. your phone should then say usb plug now..
3) Now go to your device manager or your PC and you will see "Android phone" listed ( if not you need to install the HBOOT driver). click on android phone and it will expand if it does not say BOOT LOADER INTERFACE then you must install HBOOT driver on your PC.. here is a link..... public:windows_hboot_driver_install [RootWiki]

Be care full in this process because you can easily erase your HTC driver..... but this is also OK... just reinstall "HTC SYNC" and it will reinstall your HTC driver...

will this work for unrooted?

its seems yes it will work I just flashed a new splash screen and my phone never asked for su... but Mr. Ed. said that it may not stick he is probably right he always is......( I tried to check him the other day but his info was not wrong his hboot allowed the conversion to take place...mine would not with his tool..) but with this method you can flash any pic you want without root... but like i said MR. Ed. has a point .......will it stick.. I guess your only option is to find out.. just post if you have a problem... you have been assumilated

ADB is an HTC driver... with out it your PC does not know your device ( phone)..(i mentioned earlier that this driver would not due.....) however if you do not have this driver Your PC will not recognize you phone . you must have this driver.. .. most root methods point you to install HTC sync this is so you probably have the driver on your PC and just not know.... BUT YOU need both HTC driver and HBOOT driver.........

Is it just me or does it seem like a custom splash screen is about as difficult and time consuming as the rooting process (if not more)? I mean, sheesh....it's just a splash screen. There should be an easier way.

Until then, I think I'll just stare at the stock one. Thanks for trying to make it easier, though, guys!

There are plenty of them out there made already. I think the hardest part is getting everything set up, other than that its just a couple steps to get it done.

This is just for making YOUR own. There are lots out there that you just flash in hboot...search around xda, literally hundreds i bet, mine is a droid standing over a crime scene of a dead apple...

Its not hard at all......boot animations are a different story.....very time consuming

Time consuming yes but i wouldnt say they are more difficult, just kind of more tedious...? me and my friend made a few of our own. Like one that says "like a boss"...then "eat ramen"....then "**** bitches" "MattGregor" lol it was all animated lettering and what not. We also made one that said "matress?" "impressive sir" Has anyone seen that commercial it cracks me up.

I dont make them anymore since i moved and he had all the software but i have them in a dropbox somewhere lol.

Well, that's what I'm saying...it's a little tedious to set up just to switch one pic. I mean, seriously, there are rooting methods that are easier.

I don't want someone else's splash screen -- I'm a creative person myself. But for the few times I actually see the splash screen, it's not worth the time investment to customize it.

Not that I don't appreciate what you guys are offering here -- it's just my personal opinion of the time investment required for just a splash screen.
