Gmail Contact Sync Issue

Hello Everyone

I just got my Hero a few days ago (upgraded from an Instinct) and have been lurking in the forums for a while but I haven't seen this issue come up yet. When I upgraded I transferred my contacts from my Instinct to the Hero and when I turned on the Google Contact Sync it erased most of my contacts. Luckily I was able to recover them through the Lookout App (which rocks btw).

Has anyone had this issue or know whats going on? I want to be able to back up my contacts on Gmail but I am a bit leery about it. Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I think that's pretty typical whether you're on an Android phone doing Google contact sync or on a Windows Mobile phone and you activate Exchange Activesync. You're contacts on the server (or cloud) will overwrite what is in your phone. If you're on a Windows phone and you stop your EAS sync and delete the server all your contacts, emails and calendar items will vanish.

Why not just get your contacts loaded up to Google and them you don't have to worry about it anymore. If you get a new phone.. just put your Google account info in, and down comes all your stuff with no hassle?

Whats the easiest way to export the contacts I have now to Gmail?

You have to make sure your settings are set to sync both ways. That way you will populate both your phone and your Gmail acct with each others contacts. If you have duplicates, delete them in your Gmail acct and you will be done. Then if you add someone to Gmail it will show up on your phone, and if you add someone in your phone it will show up in your Gmail.

Is there a setting on the phone or In Gmail that I need to change so that it syncs both ways?
