Hi there
I'm new to the forum and I think it's great so far.

I bought a San Francisco TFT the other day and I wanted to debrand it because it seems that everybody has and it will improve the phone.

But I don't know how to do all three things???? Is there a video or a link that teaches you how to do it step by step??

Thanks

I don't think that link will work because i've got the TFT version and it says newer version will get bricked.

My other half has the newer TFT and she's fine to upgrade, I checked this morning.

Here's text from the article -

STOP AND READ OR YOU MAY BRICK YOUR PHONE!

There are two generations of this phone. If you have the first generation, you are safe and you can follow this guide.

If you have the second generation, DO NOT continue with this guide or you will brick your phone!

To check what generation your phone is, download Ask Mr Pigfish from the market, install and run. At the top of the screen, the app will tell you whether you have a "G1" (first generation phone) or "G2" (second generation phone). Click here for an example.

- If you have a G1, you are safe to continue with this guide.
- If you have a G2, STOP or you will brick your phone. ROMs and tools will be available later for the G2, so check back soon. Until then, you should not try to root, install custom ROMs or flash ClockworkMod Recovery.

Hi gavin....

Before you do anything you will regret, please get Mr. Pigfish from Market.

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.apedroid.pigfish&feature=search_result

This little app will verify if you are G1 or G2.

This is my result, and I have a Orange San Fran bought about 2 weeks ago in the UK. I do not think there have been any G2's sold in the UK.

If it was a g2 it would have 2.2 on it already surely :)

Think you are correct here.....:)

from Pigfish description on Market:

IMPORTANT! This app is ONLY for ZTE Blade phones (or renamed ZTE Blades like the Orange San Francisco).
It has one purpose and one purpose only and that is to check if your phone uses the original address space for the kernel and console framebuffer (called G1 model in this app) or the newer address space used by official Android 2.2 ZTE Blades (called G2 models in this app).

So, be careful.........

Thanks everyone I was told by my friend it was definetly G2. So i kepy believing him.

But Pigfish said G1. So I'll try and use the first link this one below.
How To Install Android 2.2 FroYo On The Orange San Francisco / ZTE Blade From Scratch

Does this one defintly work?

I had an issue with this guide, regarding the use of Recovery Manager, which is used in the guide, as many other ppl seem to have.

I had to change tack, and use the ROM Manager app, available from Market:

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager&feature=search_result

Also, I found Chris Lowthian's guide more reliable to get to Froyo....

Upgrade your Orange San Francisco / ZTE Blade to Froyo 2.2 [OLED & TFT Versions]

Hope this helps, make sure you are rooted first, use Universal Androot, both guides have links to d/l this app.

Best of luck, mine worked out fine, but you must read a lot of info from here and modaco...:)

You have to root your OSF regardless of which guide/procedure you use.

First, make sure your phone is set to allow installation of non-Market apps:

Settings/Applications/Unknown sources must be checked.

Both recommend the use of the Universal Androot app:

Download from Download UniversalAndroot.apk for free on uploading.com

or

http://tinyurl.com/urooted

You can do this from the browser on your phone or copy the d/l onto your sd card and tap install, which should install Universal Androot to your phone.

Run the app, and tap "root"....

It may say you are already rooted, but go again anyway.

Which Build of Froyo is that? Does it have all the tweaks etc the modaco/JJ builds have? Hardware acceleration namely?

Hi, Excellency ;)

Swedish Spring RLS2......

Kernel is 2.6.32.9-perf

According to Chris Lowthian:

The ROM was put together by Seb from the Modaco forums and I must say he did a great job. My Orange San Francisco now runs so much smoother, faster and the battery life seems to have improved since upgrading from 2.1.

I'm afraid I don't know any more than that, this was my first ROM

and it works well, no probs at all, Battery good generally, but I have used the "recalibration tip" shown below, it seems to give a good indication of Battery:

Battery Recalibration ProTip - Android @ MoDaCo

I have overclocked to 691, 710 caused phone to crash :(

Used free Overclock Widget.

Also, used free VM Heap Tool to increase Dalvik VM heap size to 32 from 24 default.

Next will be CyanogenMod RC3, when it is stable and tested enuff.

In the link i showed you first below
Upgrade your Orange San Francisco / ZTE Blade to Froyo 2.2 [OLED & TFT Versions]
it says Install Universal Androot in its first step. So after that I can carry on with the rest of the steps and it will debrand and upgrade to 2.2?

Yeah......rooting your phone via Universal Androot is an essential 1st step.

Just installing this is not enough, you must run the app, tap Root, ignore if it says you are already rooted, go again.....

After you are rooted, you should see Superuser app in your app drawer..looks something like this:

Also, make sure you perform all the steps in the guide, using the Rom Manager from Market........

Please make sure you carry out the back-up:

Now perform a backup in ClockWork Recovery Mod by going to

@gavin08 it might seem a little daunting first time round but as long as you follow the steps you'll (almost certainly) be fine! I used the first guide but the second one mentioned looks fine too. there are different roms out there so you can shop around for the one that suits you best, here is a link to the available roms for the blade....

31/Mar [ROMS] Current Known / Available ROM's for the ZTE Blade [GEN1] - Android @ MoDaCo

@dannymur RC3 is pretty good, never had any problems with it but i don't use wifi so i've no idea if it has any issues there. RC4 is out now so i'm about to flash that n see what's what.

Spot on minion :p

I've done a bit of reading and it's apparently safe to increase the davlik heap size all the way to 64! I've my other halfs sitting at 56 and it appears quite stable.

Could one enquire what you have learned about this Heap, as I am anxious to learn.......particularly from such an exalted personage as yourself, Excellency.

What is it?? Even a link would do....

It is a continued pleasure to provide tutelage and share information with such a knowledgeable individual as yourself.

I'd enquired as to the maximum, safe heap size via the prestigious modaco forums where 2 charming gentleman going by the names of "Mushroom_Lord" & "hugobosslives" replied with some most useful information. A trascription of this conversation can be found here.

Will you pass my regards on to the lady of the lake please? It has been a while since I made her "acquaintance"
