K-9 Mail vs. Stock HTC/Android on Thunderbolt

I haven't used K-9 since I had my OG Droid, but I remember it did have nice features that the stock mail or Gmail app didn't have. I'm comfortable with Gmail right now, but I may give it a go just to check it out for customization sake. That and the fact that you can mass delete! C'mon Gmail!

----

Update: I gave it another go and man, they've come a long way. Some stuff I'd forgotten, some stuff has been added. G'bye, stock Gmail app, hello K-9 and unified mail. I will miss my Gmail Notifier icons, but I think I can live without them. ;)

If stock works, that's fine. K9 has so many additional features that power emailers miss terribly with just a few exceptions. It embarrasses the iPhone email to be the rookie it is.
- Signatures for every account
- East setting up and handling multiple email accounts & types
- Select all easily in most places
- Ability to set how much data to download for emails by default per account
- Numerous settings to customize viewing email how you prefer
- Ability to check different email accounts at different frequencies (save battery)

I could go on but it's really not comparable. If you just need one account and the stock works, that's fine.

I posted this in another thread:
I am an Android/TB newb (so hopefully any Android vets will chime in and correct any inaccuracies), coming from BlackBerry (email MACHINE). I have 4 different email accounts + Gmail. Like you, I only got Gmail for TB. I started with the native MAIL app but found it frustrating after coming from BB. I like having my email accounts separate as each is used for different purposes. Sure, unified box is color coded but I like them completely separate. Also, coming from BB, I liked having different notification tones for each account so I know (from the tone) which email hit. Someone recommended K-9. I deleted my MAIL accounts and loaded K-9 and never looked back. It seems to do all I want and probably more. The notification bar has icons indicating accounts. The pull-down shows which email accounts received (with counters), one click and I'm in that inbox, backing out brings up a summary page of all accounts with counters (one click and in that account), individual notification tones, set each account for different polling intervals, and more.

I still have much to learn and suspect there is more to find and tweak. It still is not push but if a particular account is important, you can poll every minute.

I have a yahoo, hotmail and 2 other personal Pop3 accounts coming thru my URL hosted on godaddy. The Hotmail occasionally has issues but that was so far only in the first couple of days. It has been behaving well last few days. When I setup the Hotmail, k-9 said free hotmail was not supported but it seems to be working fine now.

Hope this is helpful and I hope others chime in with corrections and/or other recommendations. Many luv unified inbox - not me. :)

BTW, have seen posts which indicate Gmail works in K-9 but I just leave my Gmail separate. The notifications bar has a designated icon for Gmail so it is nice to clearly see that separate and - like I said (like you) - my Gmail is only for TB.

For me, if the stock mail app was the only choice, I would have trouble using Android for my day to day work. K-9 has some nice features, but the one thing that I use most is the push email functionality. Most of the emails I get are very time sensitive and I need notifications the instant I get them.

K-9 has yet to let me down in the push email realm. My only gripe is the ability to copy/paste in the app.

This says it all. A little more setup than stock, but worth it for multiple e-mail accounts.

To empty the trash folder in the stock app with 1-click, just tap the big "Empty Folder" button on top center.

Or press and hold clicking a mailbox. It will give you a menu, empty trash and done. Some very small minor issues, nothing that cannot be worked around. Easily best mail app on any smartphone, period.

Perhaps those methods are HTC customizations. They are not available in the stock Android email client (as of version 2.2.1.) Feel free to Google "empty trash folder android email" to see for yourself.

This is a bit of a hack.

From the forums I read while trying to resolve this problem I noticed it worked for some people and didn't work for others. I my experience with software, I've learnt that software is not really erratic. There's always a pattern.

After trying all sorts of combinations, I came up with a process which has worked for me 3 times. You can all try it out and let me know if it works for you.

The process involves pretending to setup a hotmail account using ActiveSync (which will fail) then changing the settings to that of a gmail account. I know it sounds bizarre but it worked for me 3 times. The steps are below.

Pretending to setup a hotmail account

1. Go to the Launcher screen
2. Tap on "Email" icon
3. Press Menu
4. Add account
5. Enter full Email address: username@hotmail.com or username@live.com
6. Enter password
7. Tap Manual Setup
8. Choose Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync
9. Domain\Username: your full email address (example: username@hotmail.com or username@live.com). DO NOT USE "\" in front of the email address. You are not in any Exchange server domain.
10. Your password is already filled in from Step 6, ignore it
11. Server: m.hotmail.com
12. Use Secure connection (SSL) - Yes
13. Accept all SSL Certificates - Yes
14. Tap Next

You should see a checking server settings message ... mine took around 3 seconds.

Account options window

Email Checking Frequency - Automatic (Push) [<- that is the whole reason you wanted this, right?]
Amount to sync - your choice
rest of the four option - totally your choice
Tap Next

Choose account color - your choice
Tap Next

Account Name: Hotmail or WLM (or whatever you want)
Tap Next

At this point you will get the error message "Failed to create the account. Please try again later."

This is expected as a result of a bug with the HTC mail app. Now, moving on to setup the actual email account we're going through all this for.

Setting up actual Gmail Account

  1. Tap "Ok" and tap the "Back" button twice.
  2. Change the email address to your gmail/googlemail address.
  3. Change the server address to m.google.com, leave to domain blank and
  4. Change the username to your full email address.
  5. Of course you need to change the password as well.
  6. Also make sure SSL is checked.
  7. Hit the "Next" button twice and then enter and "Account Name" if you wish. Finally tap "Finish Setup".
DONE! Hopefully your account should be ready to go!

Give it a try and let me know how it goes.

So i used this hack to setup my gmail, hotmail an windjammercable mail in activesync so i could get push notifications for all my mail in one central app. Here is the problem, when i set the update schedule to push in offpeek time it causes my phone to continously do a data sync every 3 seconds non stop! Is there any setting that will get this working correctly?
Windjammercable mail uses google servers for their mail distribution.
If i set peak to push, an off peek to manuel, then changed peak to start at 8am an off peek to start at say 7am would that fix my problems? Or does peak an off peak require 12hrs gap between the two?

Don't understand this. I hated that the BB didn't have a trash folder. Would get nailed any time a quick message was placed into my inbox while deleting a message.
Well not perfect when that happens but it was great having the option to Delete from Phone or Phone and Server.

I was wondering if K9 has that because stock email does not. Also how does K9 inbox work? Will it automatically remove email from phone over time or do you have to make room for email before more will be delivered?
