Root Gingerbread Rooting root.

I seem to have problems with everything. Im putting gingerbread on my phone now, I downloaded the rooted version to my computer, compressed it, put it straight to my SD card, going into bootstrap recovery, clicking the choose zip from sd card, finding the zip, yes I want to install the zip. Then its on the "installing update" part and stays stuck on there. What am I doing wrong?

Im on a mac, it automatically unzips it when I download the file so I have to compress it, is that where im screwing up?

It might be. Find the file from the browser on your phone. Download it. Then go in with Root Explorer to your download folder on your SD card, take it out of that folder and place it on the root of your SD card. Done. Now you're ready to bootstrap into your custom recovery and apply zip from SD card.

No computers needed.

It worked! Thanks, good idea. It was the fact that I was downloading it onto a mac and that it automatically unzips it to a file thats 550mb.

You can turn that off in Safari.

When the file is compressed by the person who releases it, it's also signed at the same time. You can't just zip it back up - it needs to be signed as an installable package in order to work.
