THE ANDROID FANS: HOW TO : Install ANDROID 2.2 (FROYO) [LATEST I5800 XXJPF] on your Samsung GT-i5800/5801

Basically, when you extract the JPF .rar file you get 4 .tar files in the folder that is automatically created (instead of one when you did JPB). So, in ODIN uncheck the 'one package' box (because you now have 4 files to load, not one), select the OPS file that you downloaded (as before), then under that box select individually the BOOT, PHONE, PDA and CSC .tar files in the I5800XXJPF folder.

ODIN is then ready.

Then you go through the same process with your phone as described before.

Let me know how you get on if you try it.

Just tried this on a Vodafone NZ GT I5800. Sadly this didn't provide 3g (or any) data connection except wifi. Everything else works great though!

Edit: I'm a noob. Didn't set the apn settings. Fixed now.

I am pleased my instructions helped. Now, IF if you want to go one step further you can 'root' your phone and get 'Superuser' access by following the steps in this link:

z4root worked for me on my I5800 with Android 2.1, but I couldn't get it to work with the 2.2 version I5800XXJPB version . However, I downloaded Superoneclick and followed the instructions in the link and it worked straight away.

To install busybox, I downloaded it to my PC, unzipped it to get the .apk file, then transferred it to the root directory of my microSD card using a microSD adapter in a card reader. Then put the microSD card back in the phone, go to 'Applications', and look for the 'My Files' icon (it is on 'screen 2' on my phone). Click on it and it will show you what is installed on your microSD card. Scroll down and click on busybox.apk and follow the instructions to install it.

Johan,

If you root your phone you will get 'Superuser' access which will then allow you to install apps for root users only. You will know if you have Superuser access because a 'Superuser' icon will appear on your screen. It is a bit like getting Administrator privilege in MS Windows - you can see more of the operating system files than ordinary users can and run special apps that ordinary users cannot.

If you root your phone you can install apps like Busybox, Cachmate for root users, Mybackup for root, etc etc, and explore the 'hidden' files using Root Explorer.

You can do all this with the version JPB that you have already. You don't have to upgrade to JPF. Just follow the instructions to install Superoneclick in the link I gave.

I haven't noticed the differences between JPB and JPF, but just wanted the latest version. It seem to work very well.

When you say you are getting hang what do you mean? Do you mean ODIN stops working, eg the timer stops and ODIN does not finish, or do you mean that once ODIN finishes, your phone does not reboot and gets stuck on the pulsating boot screen ?

you cant open it because the stupid programmers that made the kies application made it almost as heavy as World of Warcraft (when you play it on lowest graphics)so it takes up of about 500-600 of your ram space, and if you're using an ancient 2GB ram like me, you wont be able to run it im afraid

You need to extract the .rar file you have downloaded (I use 'Free RAR Extract frog' or 'IzArc'). The extraction process should automatically creat a folder 'I5800XXJPF' or 'I5800XXJPB' or similar, etc) Within that folder you will will find the .tar file (it won't be called Froyo, it will be called I5800XXJPF.tar etc).

At stage 3 in the instructions put in the correct path to the .tar file.

Then complete the rest of the procedure.

I think that free extract frog app is also supposed to be mentioned in the requirements, or for flips sake put the .tar files directly in, not the rar!! i mean why?! lol

I don't want to hijack the Original Posters thread but the following would probably makes thing clearer:

Preparation: Make sure

(1) You have the latest version of Samsung Kies installed on you PC. You are not going to use it but it helps in keeping latest Windows drivers installed.

(2) You have downloaded ODIN and the OPS file to your PC. These can all be found on www.samfirmware.com and registering is free.

(3) You have downloaded the new firmware you wish to flash. It is usually in the form of a .rar archive file which you need to extract. If you downloaded from samfirmware take a note of the password you need to extract the file.

(4) Your Samsung I5800 phone battery is fully charged.

(5) When told to hard reset your phone you can do it by switching on, waiting for the home screen, going to the keypad and typing the code *2767*3855# (this will automatically start the process and wipe the cache and reset the phone.

Then follow the instructions above to start ODIN and connect your phone.

Thanks to all for providing the upgrade instructions. It took a while, but I am now the proud user of FROYO.XXJPF.

A few observations from this novice/non-technophile:

1. The phone I bought (a Polish-language version bought in USA on Amazon) came with Eclair, Rev. 1. Not sure if that made any difference in the end, but I note it. I didn't retain the actual file name.

2. Following the instructions at the top, then alternate ones further down the thread, I sought to download the single JPB file initially. Three tries, three hangs. Waited 15 minutes a couple of times. Thought I had killed the phone.

3. One point of confusion in the instructions: with each download attempt, I received the 'disconnect serial port & wait until rebooting phone' in the ODIN
message box BEFORE the ODIN timer finished and the box on top turned blue and said "PASS". This caused me some confusion as to when to disconnect the serial cable. There were also a couple lines that appeared in the message box after "disconnect serial port. . ." (one, I believe, said "Instant destroyed") that freaked me out a bit.

4. Finally, decided to go with the JPF package. So, entered all four of the .tar files into ODIN and held my breath after starting the download. Sure enough, though, after a few minutes of boot time, the home screen popped up. A little minor fiddling (including the second hard reset) and nearly good as new. Not sure what to do about a few little anomalies I'm noticing--hangs, intermittent GPS. Any further tips (or links to tips) in that regard appreciated.

FYI the first time I tried to update from Rev 2.1 to 2.2 it didn't go smoothly either. I think it took me about 4 hours to get there!
