X10: 10X better with 2.0?

I don't see why they would ship it with 1.6. I would prefer it if they dropped the crazy UI they're making and just shipped it with stock 2.0. It would cost them less too (less time and moneys wasted on making a crappy interface).

Why not give the consumer the option same phone but offer both 1.6/Racheal or 2.0

The UI is layered ontop of the stock android, so it doesn't really stop them from moving to 2.0 fast. I've also spoken to a Sony Ericsson guy who said they are working on getting 2.0 on it and it could be used if it's stable enough at deadline.

This is one phone I'm very much looking forward to. The only downside I see is the lack of 2.0, but if they do upgrade prior to launch i can really see this phone hitting the street big!

2.0 is definately sweet- I'm playing with it on the Moto Droid that I got (for free) from Verizon (because I have had so many problems with my BlackBerry). I would bet that SE will figure out how to get 2.0 on the phone before releasing it, or they will be behind the 8 ball compared to the rest of the industry that will be on 2.0 mainstream.

I mean I don't know how it works but I am just waiting for this phone because I wanted a smart phone with a better/best camera and this phone fits the requirements I want to have. But the only drawback I see is the absence of 2.0. So, can we upgrade it ourselves?

You would just later upgrade it to 2.0. It's all software, and it runs under the TimeScape and MediaScape. And TS and MS are one of the big draws for the phone anyways and it makes it unique, where as every other android phone with 2.0 has the same software capabilities which is just sort of blah.

Definitely picking this bad boy up when it releases or when a stray one hits ebay. (Already seen a few go on ebay for around $900.)

apparently at CES the X10 had android 2.0 on it and was running smoothly unlike past reviews:

I was at AT&T this afternoon inquiring about U-Verse and asked about this phone- they said they are getting 5 android devices this month and the Sony is not one of them. HOPEFULLY it is in their Feb mix, which they don't know which phones those are yet...

SE has already stated the X10 won't be out until Q2 of this year for USA. Therefore no February unfortunately.

Not to mention, the Q2 launch is on Roger's Canada, and not the USA (North America doesn't mean USA specifically) Also that At&t's android phone line up is supposedly more of a release road map between Q2 and Q4 of this year and they already mentioned the manufacturers for the devices, none of which is SE. This phone will never be subsidized by At&t, everyone with At&t service will be stuck buying this online, unlocked.

On the SE dev forums you see a lot of people ask this question too and it's really not much of a surprise. They developed the phone and their custom "ui" and media/timescape apps to run on 1.6. Which, might I add, is still the most highly used version of android on launching phones. It represents a more stable, and time tested build over 2.1 which just saw its first release with the Nexus One or 2.0 with the droid.

Take a look at mid-range Android phones that are releasing this year, whether from HTC or another manufacturer. Generally they are all running 1.6 and "future updates to 2.X" so it's really not SE doing anything different. Then keep in mind that every phone with out of the box 2.0 or 2.1 support is a Google phone, or a Google Experience phone and there is more reason for them to have those versions and others don't. The X10 isn't either of those. Look at the update roadmap for Android phones, I think you will find all google experience phones at the top of the list for updates..

Yeah, relying on SE for updates is a pain in the ass. They seem to be getting better though. I mean they've already released the update schedule for the X2 which is more than they ever did for the X1 or any other smartphone they made.

Other reasoning here is android community. I have no doubt this phone is going to be rooted and have custom 2.x roms w/ timescape and mediascape in no time. We've seen how quickly the sense ui was ported into 2.0. I'm sure we'll be looking at something very similar.

I just caught wind that this phone is going to debut in the for around 599 Euro's meaning this phone is going to cost upward of $820 USD. Which compared to other similarly spec'd phones in the Android world is pretty heft markup. For instance, Nexus One is probably better in every aspect other than the camera and size of the screen, though it's still going to win for AMOLED. You can get that for 530 USD. I have a feeling there will be a Nexus One with At&t 3G around the same time we see the X10 and that is going to make the choice difficult.
