What does GPS toggle on/off do?

I have location settings unchecked as to save battery life... well I put the GPS toggle on one of my screens and when I switched it to ON, nothing seemed to happen...

I thought I could just turn that on and go use Sprint Navigation or something but turns out I still had to go into settings, location, and check them all.

So, what's the point of the GPS toggle?

The GPS on the hero is only used it an application needs it. So essentially toggling it on will do nothing untill you open an app that that needs it. You will then see the GPS icon come on in the taskbar. When you exit the app, it will automatically turn the GPS back off. This is a "Smartphone". So leaving the GPS on , and location off, does nothing unless an app needs it.
Hope that helps.
